  • As the complexity and diversity of modern urban development increases, the importance of external space planning in urban development projects is growing. This study analyzes the importance and characteristics of each major to enhance the utility value of external space, which aims to improve the efficiency of external space planning and ultimately improve the quality of life of residents. To this end, we reviewed relevant literature, legal guidelines, checklists, and guidelines, and derived 17 external space indicators through expert surveys and FGIs, and organized them into five major categories: accessibility, connectivity, suitability, stability and locality, and landscape planning through FGIs with experts in architecture, urbanism, and landscape architecture. As a result of the analysis, urban planning and design majors prioritized planning that considers the hierarchy and characteristics of the landscape structure, securing public space through the connection of open spaces and pedestrian paths, and connecting organic and three-dimensional buildings, streets, and parks; architectural planning and design majors prioritized harmony with the surrounding environment, securing public space through the connection of open spaces and pedestrian paths, and connecting organic and three-dimensional buildings, streets, and parks; and landscape (environmental) and landscape majors prioritized harmony with the surrounding environment, connecting with adjacent buildings, streets, parks, and green spaces, and planning with integrated landholdings. This emphasizes that urban development projects should secure publicness and integration through harmonious connections with adjacent buildings, streets, parks, and green spaces. This study developed evaluation indicators for evaluating the external space planning of urban development projects and quantified them through the hierarchical analysis method (AHP), which will be useful for future policy formulation and practical application in the fields of urban planning and design, architectural planning and design, landscape (environment), and landscape architecture.

  • This study aims to define concepts on Hospital Design Focused on System to respond to the development and change by comparing general design methods of the General hospital architecture in Korea and analyze elements suitable to concepts on Hospital Design Focused on System in the General hospital architecture through examining the transformation of General hospitals in Korea. Essential architectural elements composing the Hospital Design Focused on System are as follows. First of all, the elements which can react to development of hospital architecture are HOSPITAL STREET and site situation. Secondly, core, equipment shaft, column, MAIN STREET and air handling unit room are elements of great importance as the location of these elements determines the dimensions and scale of the space which hospital functions are assigned to. Third, the area in regard to the rate of change is formed by MAIN STREET, which is the primary element, and envelope. The depth between MAIN STREET and envelope is defined as space depth. The flexible area is determined depending on this space depth and thus how to set up this flexible area determines the degree of readiness in responding to the change.

  • The blinds in the intermediate space are installed to block the direct solar radiation. As the blind divides the airflow of intermediate space into two parts, thermal performance of Double-Skin Facade(DSF) is affected by the blind position. Therefore the blind position should be planned with careful consideration in order to maximize the thermal performance of DSF. In this study, CFD was performed to analyze the effect of blind position in multistory-type DSF in variation of other DSF elements. The simulation results showed that the case with narrow depth of intermediate space and outlet on upper side of outer-facade, it is profitable to place blind as close as possible to the outer facade. In the other cases, the blind should maintain 0.15m distance from outer facade.

  • The Contemporary paradigm to understand the complexity and diversity is moving to 'Becoming' that taken place in reviewing at the relation of various concepts. In Japan, After the collapse of modern architecture has been declared 'Metabolism' was appeared. They tried to apply organism's metabolic system to buildings based on ecological thoughts. But Metaboilsm's projects had revealed limitations of representation that the city on the mechanical system became a huge scale. As a result, It caused a break the cultural context of the region in Japan. After then, Japanese Architects expressed a pluralistic aspects of modern society for the restoration of disconnected cultural context. From this perspective, The thought of 'becoming' is a new role for Contemporary Japanese Architect. This research is focused of projects of SANAA, Ito Toyo, Sou Fujimoto, because they have spatial thought about realizing the space through the ways organizing the various potential possibilities in the simple external form not stimulated. They are realize the 'becoming-space' within the architecture. This 'becoming-space' gives people in building the new characteristics and experience that potential interactions among user, architecture and nature. It is non-representational space not fixed, but changing organically and variably.

  • The Chinese Architect Wangshu, who won the Pritzker Architecture Prize at 2012, is the first and only winner in China. This study focused on the expression of his unique architectural ideas. Especially with a high interest in Chinese traditional calligraphy and landscape painting, Wangshu tried to use its traditional features to form his own architectural way. First this study looked at the features of calligraphy and landscape painting. Second this research studied the expression of Wangshu's architectural practice in calligraphy's way. Lastly this study furthered study of Wangshu's architecture combined with landscape paintings' features. The results state these following. 1) For calligraphy, he used the "modular composition" of Chinese characters to architectural composition, which included architectural form and materials. The "similarities" and "space creation" of calligraphy are respectively applied to architectural spatial details and site planning. 2) For landscape painting, Wangshu borrows its elements to compose his architecture with "gardening consciousness". The "view method" of paintings was used to his architectural pedestrian flows, and Wangshu also based on the "space creation" of landscape painting to do architectural space design with creating the similar atmosphere.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the inclinations and expressions in contemporary architecture. Specially, we call this tendency and architectural movements as architectural metamorphosis. Metamorphosis in architecture present the core of the change of Forms and spirits in a change of outward shape and terrestrial identity. As in Ovid's extended dramatic poem of change and transformation, Metamorphoses, all Souls are deathless, and migrates from one form to another. Like these stories in Metamorphoses, Ovid tells the soul never dies, but leaps one form to anther, and can take any shape. So the architectural form, transformation and deformation in contemporary architecture means architectural sensations and cognitions can even approach the soul of form and shape under the transformation. The expressions and design strategies of metamorphosis in comtemporary architecture reveal continuous and sequential formations of space, linear structure with force and vector, rhythmical wavement and folding surface, lively wiggly flows of volumns and objects, and so on. Such qualities came from the periodical needs; separation of structure and surface, poly-surfacial movement, poly-sensual expression and experience, dematerialization and the dematerialized space, formless of non-formal architecture, digital architecture. Architecture of Metamorphosis is the ways and the needs of our period to overcome the static limits prohibits the liberal thoughts, to find the ways toward the opportunities and diversities and to unlock the imaginaire of the contemporary architecture.

A document research and field survey were used to analyze and classify the spatial characteristics of the container architecture since 2009. Based on the results of the critical review, this research proposed a framework to identify the potential of the container architecture for sustainable and flexible planning. The framework was composed of four dimensions such as flexibility, rapidity, sustainability and economic feasibility. The types of space construction were dynamically self-erecting structure, incremental structure, mobile and disposable architecture. The spacial aspects were commercial spaces, housing spaces such as dormitory and urban compact apartments, and the multi-purpose spaces such as gallery and culture space as well as temporary spaces. It attempted to resolve the concept of flexibility and mobility through the experiment so that they might apply to the space of contemporary city.

  • The aim of this study is to review phenomenological characteristics in Alvaro Siza's works through his design intention, methods and results. As a Portuguese architect, his personal and local background as well as pursuing the essence of architecture made phenomenological characteristics of his works. The emphasis of the placeness of site and the existence of architecture has close relationship with Heidegger's concept of dwelling and the role of architecture. Although Siza has maintained white plat plane of interior space which is one of features of modern architecture, he provides dramatic and dynamic experiences of space using curved and acute angle of plane in his latter part of works. Another his phenomenological nature of buildings is a striking display of space and light which is remarkable especially in his museum designs. He made this character in adopting various shapes of double ceilings, openings and their combination with natural light which he always emphasizes. As a result, Alvaro Siza's phenomenological characteristics comes not from clear architectural or philosophical theory but from continuous practice based on pursuing the essence of architecture.

  • The problem of defining the relationship between interior space and exterior envelope of a building has long been a challenging task in the field of architecture throughout its history. This research chronologically reviews some of the important turning points in various schools of thoughts concerning construction of exterior envelope, with focus on how they influenced and altered the formation of our interior environment. This research also stipulates on how technological advance in the late 20th century laid grounds for a new type of interior-exterior relations in architecture through creation of flexible and ambiguous boundary conditions. The focus of this qualitative research will be on contemporary works of Japanese architects Toyo Ito, SANAA, and related group of architects who address the issues of transparency, flexible interior layout, buffer zones, structural facade, and neutralized (homogeneous) space that produces spatial quality of non-linear, non-hierarchical, and de-materialized space as a direct alternative to modern principles of space making.

  • This study is for getting sacrificial service, discussing process of sacrificial rituals and understanding the composition of space in Dong-gok Jaesa. For these things, we're arranged for exact blueprint through actual survey and analyzed the architectural features. Dong-gok Jaesa has features which show centripetal space organization with strong closing sparsely. This is intended for sincerity during ritual which is processed without obstruction. This is a mixed form which is unified both straight dwelling and Jung Dang Hyeop Sil type. And this is for all functions which is necessary for Jaesa architecture in only one building. And this is used with organizing technique for space utility with connection of compartments and various enlargement and partition. Through these things, even though it is not a big Jaesa, it shows that this is Korea traditional composition of space technique according to several purposes.
