  • The membrane structure is being applied in structures for various uses for its many advantages as permeableness, lightweightness, constructability, resource saving, and management cost reduction, and the usage is being expanded. However, despite the development of membrane structure, the standard for architectural membrane performance that considered fire safety is still inadequate. Therefore, this study applied basalt fiber with flame resistance on architectural membrane. Also, this study confirmed the membrane applicability of basalt fiber through comparison with existing architectural membrane.

  • Recently, many membrane structure buildings are constructed with the trend of multi functional and high technological construction. The membrane structure has the characteristics such as distinguished architectural shape which can make variable space creation and can make economic use of material. Therefore, it is in the spotlight of sport complex, various concert hall, and public service buildings. However, the acoustic study of membrane structure has not been following up the increasing demand for the membrane structure. In this study, the acoustic characteristics of membrane structure will be studied and analyzed using architectural acoustic factors based on acoustic design theory And also, the differences between theoretical exhortation value and outcome of study will be studied with the basis of architectural acoustic material study.

  • The architectural membrane generally consists of weave and coating, and the PTFE membrane consists of fiberglass weave and polytetrafluoroethylene coating. The weave is usually made of fiberglass $\beta$-yarn. The $\alpha$-yarn, which is thicker than $\beta$-yarn, is also increasingly used for the weave. However, the characteristic data of the architectural membrane that is made of $\alpha$-yarn weave is still insufficient. Therefore, further studies are needed on the mechanical characteristics of the membrane according to the thickness of the yarn used for the weave that comprises the architectural membrane. This study was performed to identify the mechanical behaviors of the membranes with $\alpha$-yarn and $\beta$-yarn.

  • The membrane structure provides high satisfaction with lightweight, improved workability, reduced cost, and a free shape. Thus, its applications expanding. On the other hand, in an architectural membrane that is vulnerable to fire, the development of various architectural membranes with flame resistance is in demand. Therefore, this study applied basalt woven fabric safety for flame resistance, excellent heat insulation and thermal properties on an architectural membrane. The PTFE- coated basalt woven fabric membrane was compared with a PTFE coated glass fiber membrane by DSC/TGA, strength properties, flammability, and incombustibility properties. In addition, this study confirmed the membrane applicability of basalt woven fabric and basalt-glass hybrid woven fabric through a comparison with existing architectural membranes.

  • Membrane structures which can be used large spatial structure are being expanded because of various advantages. However, despite the diverse membrane structure buildings and materials, the standard for membrane material performance that considering fire safety is still inadequate. Therefore, this study applied basalt or glass woven fabric with flame resistance on architectural membrane, and report the fire safety for architectural membrane using the strength properties, flammability and incombustibility. From the test result, the architectural membrane using basalt or glass woven fabric showed a low heat release rate and total heat release. Therefore, it was confirmed that the fire safety is relatively high.

  • For form stability of membrane structures, membrane material is required to be in tension. Therefore, in planning and maintenance management, the engineer should consider enough about introduction of stress during construction and re-introduction of stress after completion. Clamping part is an important portion with the function for introducing tension into membrane materials, and the function to transmit stress to boundary structures, such as steel frames. Then, the purpose of this research is to clarify stress condition and stress transfer mechanism including clamping part of membrane structures, and to grasp the changing tendency of membrane structures with the passage of time. In this research, following previous one, we perform well-balanced evaluation by conducting tensile fractured tests of clamping part's specimens, and by measuring individually the amount of displacement of not only overall specimen's length but membrane material and clamping part. Thereby, we consider the influence the difference in the hardness of edge rope and the difference in the direction of thread affect modification and fracture load.

  • Architectural fabrics are now used in membrane structure with the merits of free shape, lightness and opened up new possibility for the design of new building structures. Recently PVC, PVF, PVDF, PTFE coated fabric for using the membrane structures. However, clear standards for the design and construction is not exist because of the lack of Architectural fabric research. In this paper, Flammable properties of PVDF, PTFE coated fabrics are obtained through the Flammability test using the Cone Calorimeter. Based on these results, identify the fire resistance property of the Architectural fabric.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a novel method for evaluating forward osmosis (FO) membrane performances using a non-pressurized FO system. Basic membrane performance parameters including water (A) and solute (B) permeability coefficients and unique parameter for FO membrane such as the support layer structural parameter (S) were determined in two FO modes (i.e., active layer faces feed solution (AL-FS) and active layer faces draw solution (AL-DS)). Futhermore, these parameters were compared with those determined in a pressurized reverse osmosis (RO) system. Theoretical water flux was calculated by employing these parameters to a model that accounts for the effects of both internal and external concentration polarization. Water flux from FO experiment was compared to theoretical water fluxes for assessing the reliability of those parameters determined in three different operation modes (i.e., AL-FS FO, AL-DS FO, and RO modes). It is demonstrated that FO membrane performance parameters can be accurately measured in non-pressurized FO mode. Specifically, membrane performance parameters determined in AL-DS FO mode most accurately predict FO water flux. This implies that the evaluation of FO membrane performances should be performed in non-pressurized FO mode, which can prevent membrane compaction and/or defect and more precisely reflect FO operation conditions.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate various pre-treatment methods and proprieties of water quality for wastewater reuse using reverse osmosis (RO) processes. Secondary effluents were sampled from wastewater treatment plants and lab scale pre-treatments and RO filtration test were conducted systematically. Specifically, different types of pre-treatments, such as coagulation, microfiltration and ultrafiltration, were employed to evaluate the removal efficiency of particle and organic matters which may affect the membrane fouling rate. RO process was later added to eliminate trace amounts of remaining organic matters and salt from the raw water for wastewater reclamation. The permeate through the RO process satisfied water quality regulations for industrial water uses. The experimental results showed that the initial fouling tendency differed not only by the feed water properties but also by the membrane characteristics. Membrane fouling was greater for the membranes with large surface roughness, regardless of the hydrophobicity and zeta potentials. Thus both careful consideration of pre-treatment options and proper selection of RO membrane are of paramount importance for an efficient operation of wastewater treatment.
