  • Gojong(高宗) had experienced extravagant change during a period of reign and he was located in the center of the change. He was the king who also experienced various changes in construction and accomplished a large number of construction activities aggressively. Gojong could acquire the information and details about anarchitecture, through the experience of a lot of large-scale construction activities in a regency period of Heungseon-Daewongun(興宣大院君). After opening of a port, as the western culture and technology was flowed in Korea, the knowledge of western architecture also was introduced. Gwanmungak(觀文閣) was constructed in Kyeongbokgung Palace under that influence in 1888, but the construction was not successfully finished. Due to the failure of Gwanmungak, Gojong no more constructed a western architecture until 1897. He was aware of the merits of western architectures while living in the western architecture during Agwanpacheon(俄館播遷). And he led a lot of constructions of the western architectures in Kyeongungung(慶運宮). It is possible to arrange in two reasons about the interest in an architecture of Gojong. Firstly, Gojong was individually interested in the architectures, and he constantly accomplished constructions of new buildings from childhood. And secondly, Gojong thought that western architecture has an advantage in the international situations. He held out the tendencies to construct the western architectures with excessive investments.

  • This study is on the pedagogical convention of architectural history in Korea, especially that of Western Architecture. Recent institutional change in architectural school in Korea has caused overall restructuring of academic program. In spite of extension in the field of history there was no progress of method and way of thinking. There is no change in the point of view to see the western architecture and its history as a unique and specialized phenomenon in the civilization of mankind. Because of no recognition about for what, for whom, and how to, and because of orientalism, the cultural position of western architectural history and its narrative was not asked. With the help of post-colonialism, de-constructivism and critical historiography this paper tries to show the fundamental premise of western architectural history as a myth and show its prejudice as not being justifiable. The background of the discourse there has been a representation effect with regard to knowledge as a power. we need to escape from this kind of cognitional frame With the analysis of the its premise and narrative we can find it is a historical construct that was made in the age of imperialism. In fact it has a lot of false information and problematic point of view. The Identity and originality of western architecture and its history has no logical reason or foundation if we think that it depends on the difference and comparison with other civilization. For example the explanation of its historical origin western architecture has big difference with Islamic architecture in spite of the resemblance each other. This paper try to show several reasons that discourse of western architectural history can not be survived any longer. So we need to reconstruct new pedagogy with deconstruction for the students of non western, or Korean students. Because it has important effect to see and think about architecture and its history.

  • Change orders have been widespread in both the private and public construction sectors. In particular, in the case of G2B (Government to Business) contracts, adjustment of contract price and/or schedule extension is a frequent occurrence due to change orders. To uncover the causes of change orders and suggest an appropriate strategy, this study analyzed 296 cases of change orders in military facility construction projects from 2008 to 2010. The analysis revealed that the major causes of change orders are users' additional requirements (28.38%), a change of finishing materials (23.99%), and change of footing type (17.57%), in that order. Building on the results of this analysis, the authors suggest plans for practical improvements. Specific recommendations include 1) reflect user requirements at the early stage, 2) minimize the use of additional budget due to change orders, and 3) reduce the process and time for contract amendment, among others. The results of this study may provide significant implications to those involved in military construction projects, particularly project owners (i.e., the Ministry of Defense) and contractors.

  • Computerized visual database construction of architectural precedents has just begun in some research institutes in the world. In Korea the first visual database has shown its testl version by S architectural design firm in september 1996. In this article the author discusses the historical contexts and the recent computerization cases, the traits, the uses and the limits of architectural visual database system of precedents. The forms and contents of data fields in two cases are compared with a focus on the description of architectural traits of each data entry. Compared to the KIA format, the S database has better performance for architectural design reference because it collects more pictures and drawings and larger texts for the field of architectural chracteristics. But this latter also is constrained by its capacity of memory and so lacks the reciprocity of the DOORS in the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University. A visual database system which has more flexible allocation of memory and respondent with the users is yet to be prepared. But this system also should be maintained by some experts in architectural history, theory and criticism, because their knowledge is essential for selection of precedents and revision of the data description. A full-fledged electronic visual database in architecture will not only save much effort for the architect, but also will change the architects' design behavior. Nevertheless this does not mean the automatic promotion of architects' creativity.

  • The main purpose of this study is to reveal the properties and specialities of architectural space after Modernism. Space was the main theme of Modernity in architecture and they insist Modern architectural space had its own characteristics compared with the earlier period. With view that another paradigm of space is rising as a criticism of and departure from Modernity, this study try to show what is the contents of difference and how it express in reality. We can find a new trends in architectural spaces, that are the production of totally different circumstantial background as like information society, digital media environment, post structuralism, new science and heterotopian situation in urbanism. We can call it Post Modernity in architectural space that would find the 'Otheness' and expand the territory of architecture. It means not only the change of architectural space itself but also different cognition and perception of space is taking place. Contemporaru architectural space has lost its materiality and conventional socio-cultural functions. Dematerialization and media or image -like being is the new characteristics instead. It demands a new way of being in a different life-world as well as the new expenence of architecture.

  • In order to reveal the source of the architectural norm embodied in the first built-form of ChongMyo's Main Building, three analytic types were introduced into research. According to the level of accepting the architectural form of ChongMyo in the Koryo Dynasty, these types were defined by 'newly interpreted form', 'newly introduced form', and 'coventionally accepted form'. Among the first built-form in ChongMyo's Main Building, the form of 'TaeSil' was newly interpreted on the basis of the Tang's realating norm, and the form of 'HyupSil' was newly introduced according to the contemporary trend that had increasingly regarded it as an indispensible form. But the form of 'IkSil' had the different source, that is, the architectural form of ChongMyo in the Koryo Dynasty. After reconstructed by the King ChungSun, that form had been sustained without any change until the end of Koryo Dynasty. In result, that form had been accepted conventionally at the first time of building ChongMyo in the ChoSon dynasty.

  • This study is on the architectural planning of the secondary school for the future. It focuses on principles and directions of the architectural planning. There are two motivations on the change of education paradigm. The one is that educational philosophy changes and the other is that the knowledge based society has come. Now these affection factors put the education paradigm to be changed. These educational paradigm need to be analyzed from constructivism and educational informationage. Lastly, architectural principles and directions were analogized from educational directions. Architectural principles(6 elements) and directions(15 elements) have been proposed in this study. The conclusion of this study, architectural planning of educational facilities must be with those criteria for more characteristic schools and organic schools.

  • This study incorporates fine waste glass (GS) as a replacement for natural sand (NS) in fly ash (FA) based alkali activated mortar (AAm). AAms were heated at elevated temperature of 200℃, 400℃, 600℃, and 800℃ to explore the residual mass, compressive strength, thermal expansion and change in microstructure of matrix. Results showed greater resistance of AAms with increasing GS content to 50% at each temperature. Owing to the melting of GS at 800℃, the greater matrix bond was observed for AAm incorporating 75% and 100% GS as a result, the residual compressive strength was increased.

  • Demand on free-form buildings is gradually increasing, yet owing to the difficulty of production-installation work, several problems occur in the construction phase upon construction of a building, including the increased cost and construction duration, and reduced constructibility. To solve these problems, a techonology to produce FCP using a CNC(Computerized Numeric Control) machine is developed. The technology is that the information of designed free-form buildings to the CNC machine is transferred, and the transferred information is used for RTM(Rod-Type Mold, the mold shaped by back-up rods) and PCM(Phase Change Material) shaping, and the shaped RTM and PCM have the role of molds to produce FCP. Construction duration and project cost are limited in building sites, so the efficiency of processes like production-installation of FCP for application of the technology is significant. Since it is almost impossible to change the production-installation process at the construction phase when they are established, process should be deliberately decided. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to propose a production-installation simulation model of free-form concrete panels, in aspect of PCM. This paper is establishing the process for production-installation of FCP, estimating time required by each construction type and proposing a time simulation model that changes according to various constraints based on the analyses. With the time simulation model, it will be possible to build a cost model and to review the optimal construction duration and project cost.

  • The development of digital media made the change of architectural paradigm from tectonic to the surface and pattern. This means the transition to the new kind of materiality and the resurrection of ornament. This study started as an aim to apply biological pattern to architectural design from the new perception of pattern. Architectural patterns in the early era appeared as ladders, steps, chains, trees, vortices. But since 21st century, we can find patterns in nature like atoms and molecular structures, fluid forms of dynamics and new geometrical pattern like fractal and first of all biological patterns like viruses and micro-organisms, Voronoi cells, DNA structure, rhizomes and various hybrids and permutations of these. Pattern became one of the most important elements and themes of contemporary architecture through the change of materiality and resurrection of ornament with the new perception of surface in architecture. One of the patterns that give new creative availability to the architectural design is biological pattern which is self-organized as an optimum form through interaction with environment. Biological patterns emerge mostly as self-replicating patterns through morphogenesis, certain geometrical patterns(in particular triangles, pentagons, hexagons and spirals). The architectural application methods of biological patterns are direct figural pattern of organism, circle pattern, polygon pattern, energy-material control pattern, differentiation pattern, parametric pattern, growth principle pattern, evolutionary ecologic pattern. These patterns can be utilized as practical architectural patterns through the use of computer programs as morphogenetic programs like L-system, MoSS program and genetic algorithm programs like Grasshoper, Generative Components with the help of computing technology like mapping and scripting.
