  • New WC-CrN superlattice film was deposited on Si substrate (500$\mu\textrm{m}$) using cathodic arc ion plating system. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the film depend on the superlattice period (λ). In the X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), preferred orientation of microstructure was changed according to various superlattice periods(λ). During the Transmission Electron Microscope analysis (TEM), microstructure and superlattice period (λ) of the WC - CrN superlattice film was confirmed. Hardness and adhesion of the deposited film was evaluated by nanoindentation test and scratch test, respectively. As a result of nanoindentation test, the hardness of WC - CrN superlattice film was gained about 40GPa at superlattice period (λ) with 7nm. Also residual stress with various superlattice period (λ) was measured on Si wafer (100$\mu\textrm{m}$) by conventional beam-bending technique. The residual stress of the film was reduced to a value of 0.2 GPa by introducing Ti - WC buffer layers periodically with a thickness ratio ($t_{buffer}$/$t_{buffer+superlattice}$ ). To the end, for the evaluation of oxidation resistance at the elevated temperature, CrN single layer and WC - CrN superlattice films with various superlattice periods on SKD61 substrate was measured and compared with the oxidation resistance.

  • The surface of AC8A Ah alloy was modified by adding the Cu powder using a Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) welding process. Under the optimum fabricating conditions, the modified surface of AC8A Ah alloy was observed to possess the sound microstructure with a minimum porosity. Hardness and wear resistance properties of the as-fabricated alloy were compared with those of the 76 heat-treated one. In case of the as-fabricated alloy, the hardness of the modified layer was twice that of the matrix region. Although significant increase in the hardness of the matrix region was observed after T6 heat treatment, the hardness of the modified layer was not observed to change. The wear resistance of the modified layer was significantly increased compared to that of the matrix region. The microstructure of a weld zone and the matrix region were investigated using the optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The primary and eutectic silicon in the weld zone were finer and more curved than in the matrix region, while some precipitates has had been found therein. According to the TEM observation, the predominant precipitate present in the weld zone was the $\theta$'phase, which is precipitated during cooling by rapid solidification in PTA welding process. Improvement of hardness and wear properties in the weld zone in the as-fabricated condition can be explained based on the presence of $\theta$’precipitates and fine primary and eutectic silicon distribution.

  • In the present work, we studied effect of the deposition parameters on the structure and properties of ZnO films deposited by DC arc plasmatron. The varied parameters were gas flow rates, precursor composition, substrate temperature and post-deposition annealing temperature. Vapor of Zinc acetylacetone was used as source materials, oxygen was used as working gas and argon was used as the cathode protective gas and a transport gas for the vapor. The plasmatron power was varied in the range of 700-1,500 watts. Flow rate of the gases and substrate temperature rate were varied in the wide range to optimize the properties of the deposited coatings. After deposition films were annealed in the hydrogen atmosphere in the wide range of temperatures. Structure of coatings was investigated using XRD and SEM. Chemical composition was analyzed using x-ray photo-electron spectroscopy. Sheet conductivity was measured by 4-point probe method. Optical properties of the transparent ZnO-based coatings were studied by the spectroscopy. It was shown that deposition by a DC Arc plasmatron can be used for low-cost production of zinc oxide films with good optical and electrical properties. Sheet resistance of 4 Ohms cm was achieved after the deposition and 30 min annealing in the hydrogen at $350^{\circ}C$. Elevation of the substrate temperature during the deposition process up to $350^{\circ}C$ leads to decreasing of the film's resistance due to rearrangement of the crystalline structure.

  • The seawater pipes in the engine rooms of ships are surrounded by severely corrosive environments caused by fast flowing seawater containing chloride ions, high conductivity, etc. Therefore, it has been reported that seawater leakage often occurs at a seawater pipe because of local corrosion. In addition, the leakage area is usually welded using shielded metal arc welding with various electrodes. In this study, when seawater pipes were welded with four types of electrodes(E4311, E4301, E4313, and E4316), the difference between the corrosion resistance values in their welding zones was investigated using an electrochemical method. Although the corrosion potential of a weld metal zone welded with the E4316 electrode showed the lowest value compared to the other electrodes, its corrosion resistance exhibited the best value compared to the other electrodes. In addition, a heat affected zone welded with the E4316 electrode also appeared to have the best corrosion resistance among the electrodes. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance of the weld metal zone and heat affected zone exhibited relatively better properties than that of the base metal zone in all of the cases welded with the four types of electrodes. Furthermore, the hardness values of all the weld metal zones were higher than the base metal zone.

  • In this work, we report basic performance test results of a lab-scale three phase alternative current (AC) arc plasma torch system for plasma gas reforming applications. The suggested system primarily consists of three graphite electrodes inclined at 12.5° to the central axis, a 𝞥 150 mm cylindrical gas path and a three phase-60 Hz AC power supply. At air flow rate of 50 Lpm and arc currents of 100-175 A, test results revealed that plasma resistances were decreasing from 1.08 Ω to 0.53 Ω with the increase of plasma power from 9.3 kW to 13.8 kW, causing the decrease of power factor and increase of the line voltages. However, the injected air can be heated quickly up to the temperatures of >1,200℃ when injecting AC arc plasma powers of >10 kW.

  • The experimental investigation focuses on an influence of artificial aging time in longitudinal butt welded Al 6013-T4 aluminum alloy on the fatigue crack growth resistance. The preferred welding processes for this alloy are frequently tungsten inert gas welding (TIG) process due to its comparatively easier applicability and better weldability than other gas metal arc welding. Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out on compact tension specimens (CT) in longitudinal butt TIG welded after T82 heat treatment was varied in three artificial aging times of 6 hours, 18 hours and 24 hours. Of the three artificial aging times, 24 hours of artificial aging time are offering better resistance against the growing fatigue cracks. The superior fatigue crack growth resistance preferred spatial variation of materials within each specimen in the Paris equation based on reliability theory and fatigue crack growth rate by crack length are found to be the reasons for superior fatigue resistance of 24 hours of artificial aging time was compared to other joints. The highest of crack propagation resistance occurs in artificial aging times of 24 hours due to the increase in grain size (fine grained microstructures).

  • Titanium alloys have been used for dental materials due to it's very good biocompatibility. Ti-6Al-4V alloy instead of pure titanium is being widely used as biomaterials has some characteristics such as high fatigue strength, tensile strength and corrosion resistance. But it has been reported recently that the vanadium element expresses cytotoxicity and carcinogenicity and the aluminium element is related with dementia of Alzheimer type and neurotoxicity. The Ti-Nb alloys has designed and examined corrosion resistance. Ti-3wt.%Nb($\alpha$type), Ti-20wt.%Nb(${\alpha}+{\beta}$type) and Ti-40wt.%Nb($\beta$type) alloys were melted by vacuum arc furnace. The corrosion resistance of Ti alloys was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization test in the solution of 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCl. The results can be summarized as follows: 1) For the corrosion test in the solution of 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCl, the corrosion behaviour of Ti-Nb alloys was similar to ASTM grade 2 CP Ti. 2) The corrosion resistance of Ti-20Nb alloy was better than that of CP-Ti, Ti-3Nb, Ti-40Nb alloy in 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCl, solutions.

  • The surface microstructural changes, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of Ti-Pd alloys for dental biomaterials have been investigated. Ti, Ti-Pd alloys were melted in arc furnace and the corrosion resistance of Ti-Pd alloys was evaluated by anodic polarization test. The surface microstructural changes and mechanical properties of Ti-Pd alloys were analysed by scanning electron microscope and Vickers micro-hardness tester. The vickers hardnees of pure Ti improved by addition of Pd but Ti-25Pd alloy showed decreasing compared with Ti-15Pd. And anodic polarization and potentiostatic test were conducted in 5% HCl to quantify the resistance to corrosion with the addition of Pd, There was no significant difference in corrosion resistance between pure Ti, Ti-5Pd and Ti-15Pd alloy. However, Ti-25Pd alloy showed decreasing compared with pure Ti in corrosion resistance. From these results, it was concluded that newly formulated Ti-15Pd experimental alloy have adequate hardness and high corrosion resistance, and this alloy is promising candidate for a successful dental casting alloy.

  • Contact tips are required to have a higher resistance to wear and thus to have an extended life time under the advanced GMAW welding process. Several requirements have been specified and employed by domestic industries for selecting their tips for such a purpose. However no attempt has been made to justify their requirements based on the experimental data of wear resistance or life time of contact tips. In this study, five different contact tips with three different compositions were employed for actual GMA welding up to 4 hours and were evaluated their wear resistance by measuring in every one hour the area of enlarged hole at the exit side. Experimental results clearly showed that the Cr-containing tips strengthened by precipitation hardening have much better resistance to wear than those made by work hardening. It was further noticed that Cr is an excellent alloying element for improving the wear resistance of contact tips only when it is in an properly aged condition. Initial hardness may play some role in the early stage of wear but not in the later stage of welding because the microstructure of tip changes significantly by the prolonged exposure to welding arc heat. Based on these results, critical review has been made on the current requirements employed by domestic industries. Of importance is that a new guideline has been confirmed to be more reasonable.
