  • BEA(Boundary Element Analysis) based on Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral equation is widely used in the prediction of sound radiation problems of vibrating structures. Accurate estimation of sound pressure distribution by BEA can be [possible if and only if dynamic behavior of the relating structure was described correctly. Another plausible method of sound radiation phenomena could be the NAH(Nearfield Acoustic Holography) method. NAH also based on the identical governing equation with BEA could be one of the best acoustic imaging schemes but it has disadvantages of the complexity of measurement and of the need of large amount of measuring points. In this paper, modal expansion method is presented for taking accurate dynamic data of the structures efficiently. This method makes use of vibration principle an arbitrary dynamic behavior of the structure is described by the summation of that structures mode shapes which can be calculated by FEA easily and accurately. Sound pressure field from a vibration flat plate is calculated using the combination of vibration signal on that flat plate from experiment, and of the natural mode shapes form FEA. When sound pressure field from vibration signal is calculated the importance of the phase information was emphasized.

  • Ray-optics approach based on the rigorous coupled wave theory, called by the rigorous ray-optics method (RROM), is developed for the calculation of couling coefficients of waveguide grating devices. The coupling coefficients of several grating structures, such as rectangular, sinusoidal, triangle, and trapezoidal shapes, are determined by the RROM, and they are compared with those obtained by conventional methods of the ray-optics method (ROM) and the coupled mode method (CMM). In the case of rectangular gratings, the coupling coefficients is evaluated in detail by various depths and duty-cycles of the grating. We have found that the RROM gives more exact solutions for the coupling coefficients of even arbitrary shapes of diffractive waveguide grating devices than the other conventional methods.

  • In computer graphics, L-system is primarily used for the production of such natural shapes as flowers, trees, and grass. It is possible by iteratively applying the theory of multiple-reduction-copy-machine to an arbitrary initial shape. The purpose of this paper is to modify the shape of ordinary L-system trees so that more realistic trees can be generated. Instead of applying simple iterative function system of the L-system, we regard each branch of the trees as a living thing, and endow them with corresponding attributes. Such branch attributes as lifetime, growth speed, shape variation, attraction by environment are known to belong to the attributes of the particle system. We presented modeling methods as hypotheses for each of the attributes based on parameters, iud shown the resulting diverse tree shapes.

  • A new method which uses distance fields scheme and marching cube algorithm is proposed in order to get an accurate offset model of arbitrary shapes composed of triangular net. In the method, the space bounding the triangular net is divided into smaller cells. For the efficient calculation of distance fields, valid cells which will generate a portion of offset model are selected previously by the suggested detection algorithm. These valid cells are divided again into much smaller voxels which assure required accuracy. At each voxel distance fields are created by calculating the minimum distances between corner points of voxels and triangular net. After generating the whole distance fields, the offset surface were constructed by using the conventional marching cube algorithm together with mesh smoothing scheme. The effectiveness and validity of this new offset method was demonstrated by performing numerical experiments for the various types of triangular net.

  • Highly detailed geometric models are rapidly becoming commonplace in computer graphics and other applications. These complex models, which is often represented as complex1 triangle meshes, mainly suffer from the vast memory requirement for real-time manipulation of arbitrary geometric shapes without loss of data. Various techniques have been devised to challenge these problems in views of geometric processing, not a representation scheme. This paper proposes the new mesh structure for the compact representation and the efficient handling of the highly complex models. To verify the compactness and the efficiency, the memory requirement of our representation is first investigated and compared with other existing representations. And then we analyze the time complexity of our data structure by the most critical operation, that is, the enumeration of the so-called one-ring neighborhood of a vertex. Finally, we evaluate some elementary modeling functions such as mesh smoothing, simplification, and subdivision, which is to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our mesh structure in the context of the geometric modeling and processing.

  • An accurate method is presented for flexural vibrations of sectorial plates having simply supported-free and free-free radial edges, when the circular edge is either clamped or simply supported. The classical Ritz method is employed with two sets of admissible functions assumed for the transverse vibratory displacements. These sets consist of : (1) mathematically complete algebraic-trigonometric polynomials which gurantee convergence to exact frequencies as sufficient terms are retained, and (2) comer functions which account for the bending moment singularities at re-entrant comer of the radial edges having arbitrary edge conditions. Accurate (at least four significant figures) frequencies and normalized contours of the transverse vibratory displacement are presented for the spectra of corner angles [90$^{\circ}$, 180$^{\circ}$(semi-circular), 270$^{\circ}$, 300$^{\circ}$, 330$^{\circ}$, 350$^{\circ}$, 355$^{\circ}$, 360$^{\circ}$ (complete circular)] causing a re-entrant comer of the radial edges. Future solutions drawn from alternative numerical procedures and finite element techniques may be compared with these accurate results.

  • In the analysis of metal forming process, ALE(Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) finite element methods have been increasingly used for the capability to control mesh independently from material flow. The methods can be divided into two groups i.e., coupled and split formulations. In the present work, the split ALE formulation is used for computational efficiency. A split ALE finite element method developed for rigid-viscoplastic materials and applied to the analysis of hot square die extrusion. Since thermal state greatly affects the product quality, an ALE scheme for temperature analysis is also presented. As computational examples, profile shapes as square and cross-like sections are chosen.

  • This study concerns an advanced NURBS surface reconstruction method, which is based on the NURBS surface model fitting to the unstructured point cloud measured from an arbitrary complex shape. The concept of generating a simple triangular mesh model was introduced to generate a quadrilateral mesh model well-representing the topological characteristics of point cloud. The NURBS surface reconstruction processes required the use of the various methodologies such as QEM algorithm, merging scheme of pair-wise triangular mesh, creation algorithm of $G^1$ continuous tensor product NURBS surface patch, and so on. The effectiveness and reliability of the proposed NURBS surface reconstruction method were validated through the simulation results for the geometrically and topologically complex shapes.

  • An inverse finite element approach is employed for more capability to design the optimum blank shape from the desired final shape with small amount of computation time and effort. For multi-stage deep-drawing processes, numerical analysis is extremely difficult to carry out due to its complexities and convergence problem as well as tremendous computation time. In this paper, multi-stage finite element inverse analysis is applied to multi-stage rectangular cup drawing processes to calculate intermediate blank shapes and strain distributions in each stages. Deformation history of the previous stage is considered in the computation. Finite element patches are used to describe arbitrary intermediate sliding constraint surfaces.

  • In this study, the shapes of the wheel and rail are represented by using 3-dimensional surface functions with surface parameters and a 3-dimensional wheel-rail contact analysis is presented. A whole numerical solution of wheel-rail contact at tread and flange including 2-point contacts can be achieved with the proposed numerical algorithm. Kinematic characteristics such as variances of vertical displacement and roll angle, and variance of wheel radius difference for arbitrary yaw and lateral displacement of wheelset, are determined for the KTX wheel-rail pair as an example. The condition of yaw and lateral displacement occurring 2-point contacts to analyze derailment are compared between standard and worn wheels. Differences of contact characteristics between curved and straight rails are also analyzed.
