  • Vibrio parahaemolyticus contamination causes serious foodborne illness and has become a global health problem. As a disinfectant, aqueous ozone can effectively kill a number of bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other microorganisms. In this study, three factors, namely, the aqueous ozone concentration, the exposure time, and the bacterial density, were analyzed by response surface methodology, and the aqueous ozone concentration was the most influential factor in the sterilization ratio. Under low aqueous ozone concentrations (less than 0.125 mg/l), the bacterial cell membranes remained intact, and the ozone was detoxified by intracellular antioxidant enzymes (e.g., superoxide dismutase and catalase). Under high aqueous ozone concentrations (more than 1 mg/l), cell membranes were damaged by the degree of peripheral electronegativity at the cell surface and the concentration of lactate dehydrogenase released into the extracellular space, and the ultrastructures of the cells were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. Aqueous ozone penetrated the cells through leaking membranes, inactivated the enzymes, inhibited almost all the genes, and degraded the genetic materials of gDNA and total RNA, which eventually led to cell death.

  • Shelf-life of soybean curd prepared with ozone-treated soybeans investigated on pH, acidity, sour taste, slime formation during storage at 3$0^{\circ}C$. Total Plate counts of raw soybeans showed about log 7.0 CFU/g before ozone treatment. The sterilization efficiency of raw soybeans showed the most effective in 0.5ppm of aqueous ozone treatment at 4$^{\circ}C$ for 90 minutes. Raw soybeans were treated with ozone by different methods; (1) Ozone treatment for 90 + 90 minutes (first 3.5~5 hours and later 8.5~10 hours) of 10 hours during soaking in aqueous solutions at 4$^{\circ}C$ (OW). (2) Ozone treatment by exposure first to 30ppm of gaseous ozone for 90 minutes and then allied to OW method (GO+OW). The log reduction of raw soybeans treated by OW and GO+OW methods showed 3.72 and 4.15, respectively. Soybean curd prepared with OW and GO+OW-treated soybeans kept the shelf-life of 4 and 5.5 days at 3$0^{\circ}C$, respectively, but, that without ozone treatment spoiled at me day.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of microorganism inactivation using 3 ppm of aqueous ozone (AO), 1% citric acid, 1% lactic acid, and 1% acetic acid alone, as well as the combinations of AO and organic acid, for washing the raw materials of saengsik (carrot, cabbage, glutinous rice, barley) with or without agitation. The combination of AO and 1% of each organic acid significantly inactivated spoilage bacteria in both the vegetables and the grains (p<0.05). However, in the glutinous rice, no inhibitory effects were shown for total aerobic bacteria by using water, ozone, or the combination of AO with citric acid or lactic acid, without agitation. Microbial inactivation was enhanced with agitation in the grains, whereas dipping (no agitation) treatments showed better inhibitory effects in the vegetables than in the barley, suggesting that washing processes should take into account the type of food material.

  • The degradation efficiencies of phenol in aqueous solution were studied by semi-continuous experiments in the processes of ozone alone, ozone/bulky $Co_3O_4$ and ozone/$Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles. Catalyst samples (bulky $Co_3O_4$ and $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles) were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, $pH_{pzc}$ and the density of surface hydroxyl groups of the two catalyst samples were also measured. The catalytic activity of $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles was investigated for the removal of phenol in aqueous solutions under different reaction temperatures. Tert-butyl alcohol had little effect on the catalytic ozonation processes. Based on these results, the possible catalytic ozonation mechanism of phenol by $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles was proposed as a reaction process between ozone molecules and pollutants.

  • This study was carried out to treat the aqueous solutions containing reactive dyes(RB19, RR120 and RY179) by the Ozone demand flask method and adsorption process using activated carbon fiber(ACF) which are one of the main pollutants in dye wastewater. Ozone oxidation of three kinds of the reactive dyes was examined to investigate the reactivity of dyes with ozone, competition reaction and ozone utilization on various conditions for single- and multi-solute dye solution. Concentration of dyes was decreased continuously with increasing ozone dosage in the single-solute dye solutions. Competition quotient values were calculated to investigate the preferential oxidation of individual dyes in multi-solute dye solutions. Competition quotients(CQi) and values of the overall utilization efficiency, ${\eta}O_3$, were increased at 40mg/l of ozone dosage in multi-solute dye solutions. ACF(A-15) has much larger specific surface area$(1,584m^2/g-ACF)$ in comparison with granular activated carbon adsorbent (F400, $1,125m^2/g-GAC$), which is commonly used, and most of pores were found to be micropores with pore radius of 2nm and below. It was found that RB19 was most easily adsorbed among the dyes in this study. In the case of PCP (p-chlorophenol) and sucrose, which are single component adsorbate, adsorption capacities of ACF(A-15) were in good agreement with the batch adsorption measurement, and saturation time predicted of ACF columns for these components was also well agreed with practically measured time. But in the case of reactive dyes, which have relatively high molecular weight and aggregated with multi-components, adsorption capacities or saturation time predicted were not agreed with practically measured values.

  • Deposition to the sea surface is one of ozone's principal loss mechanisms (Galbally and Roy, 1980; Levy et al., 1985; Kramm, 1995). However, since complicated physical and chemical processes are involved, large uncertainties remain in evaluating this loss mechanism that need to be better characterized. In this study we attempted to explore possible causes that give rise to large variability of ozone deposition velocity in terms of wind speed and chemical reactivity in the aqueous-phase film. • This work carried out the removal of aniline by wet oxidation in aqueous solutions like a industrial wastewater using Ozone, UV, and Ozone-UV . The main features of this experiment are as follows: the aniline was decomposed by OH and HO$_{2}$ radicals which produced from the reaction of water with UV and Ozone, when the Ozorie and Ozone-UV used the aniline was decomposed completely. The decomposition of aniline was very fast reaction and the reaction times were within 10min. and 20min. in case of for Ozone Ozone-UV respectively. Assumed simplified reaction mechanism from the aniline oxidation model, and the we are calculated the theoretical reaction rate constants by computer simulation, and then compared with experimental data. We suggest that this simulation program is applicable to estimate of the aniline decaying concentration and removal efficiency of aniline - contaminated wastewater.

  • We studied on the decoloring effect of viscose rayon by vapor type ozone processing using ozone's strong oxidation. When ozone is generated, it becomes high concentration in vapor state, but in the insolving process with water, there are a lot of lose of ozone. As a result, a study using ozone in vapor-high concentration state is needed. So, in this paper, vapor type ozone processing is used unlike previous ozone treatment method-an aqueous solution method-to get a good effect from shortening the processing time. When vapor type ozone processing was directly treated to fabrics, high concentration ozone was generated then in a short time oxidized a dye existed in fabrics and finally decolored it. As vapor type ozone did not directly response to an organic dye, viscose rayon's decolorization was to be studied by changing pick up ratio(60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%) using water as a medium. When pick up ratio of water was 40%, fabric's whiteness was improved but tensile strength and elongation were reduced. So 60 minutes was assumed as the most adjust time to minimize the reduction of fabric's tensile strength and elongation moreover of maximize the improvement of whiteness.

  • Bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solution was measured using HPLC technique, which was established by acetonitrile analysis and KDP solution analysis methods. In these experiments the decomposition characteristics of BPA were compared using the ozone alone, ozone/pH 10, and ozone/hydrogen peroxide processes. About 70% of 10 mg/L of BPA was removed during 60 min by the ozone alone process, while 10 mg/L of BPA was completely removed by the ozone/pH 10 and ozone/hydrogen peroxide processes in 40 min and 60 min, respectively. The final decomposition efficiency drawn from results of TOC and HPLC analyses showed that the ozone/hydrogen peroxide process was the best among them, whereas the concentrations of TOC and reaction intermediates when using the ozone/pH 10 process were higher than those of the ozone alone process after 60 min of reaction. The ozone/hydrogen peroxide process was the most efficient among them when oxidizing organic carbons in water to $CO_2$ and $H_2O$.

  • Laboratory scale experiments were carried out to delineate the effects of liquid phases, such as soil water and light nonaqeous phase liquid (LNAPL) on the transport of gaseous ozone in unsaturated soil. Soil water enhanced the transport of ozone due to water film effect, which prevents direct reaction between soil particles and gaseous ozone, and increased water content reduced the breakthrough time of ozone because of increased average linear velocity and decreased air-water interface area. Diesel fuel as LNAPL also played a similar role with water film, so the breakthrough time of ozone in diesel-contaminated soil was significantly reduced compared with uncontaminated soil. Ozone breakthrough time was retarded with increased diesel concentration, however, because of high reactivity of diesel fuel with ozone. In unsaturated soil containing two liquids of soil water and LNAPL, the transport of ozone was mainly influenced by nonwetting fluid, diesel fuel in this study.
