Optimization of Product Design to Reduce Environmental Impact of Machining

  • This paper presents a study on product design optimization to reduce the environmental impact of machining. The objective is to analyze the effect of changing the product design parameters such as its dimensions, and basic features on the environmental impact of machining process in terms of its energy consumption, waste produced and the chemicals and other consumables used up during the process. To realize this objective, we used a CAD model of a product with different design scenarios, and analyze their energy consumption using an environmental impact calculator method developed. The waste produced, and the consumables used up, such as lubricants and coolants were analyzed using environmental emission factors. Optimization methods using Genetic Algorithm and Goal Programming are applied to the product design parameters in order to get the best possible product dimensions with the least environmental impact of the machining process.

사각단면을 가진 압출제품의 비틀림굽힘 압출가공법에 대한$ DEFORM^{TM}$-3D 해석 (An Analysis of the Twisting and Bending Extrusion Process of the Product with the Rectangular Section by the $ DEFORM^{TM}$-3D)

  • The twisting and bending extrusion process is developed by the $DEFORM^TM$-3D. Because the rectangular section of the extruded product has the symmetry line of cross-section area, the twisting and the bending of extruded product has not occurred. The product with the rectangular section is applied to the twisting and bending extrusion process through the twisted die surface and eccentricity die section. It is shown that the twisting of extruded product is caused by the twisted die surfaces and the bending of extruded product is causd by the eccentricity between the die section. The results by the analysis show that the twisting angle and the curvature of extruded products increases by the die twisting angle, the eccentricity, but decreases by the die length, and friction condition

  • Even though we have greater chances to accomplish successful collaborative design by utilizing recent proliferation of networks, current practices do not fully take advantage of the information infrastructure. There are so much data over the networks, but not enough knowledge about the data is available to users. The main objectives of the product data interface system proposed in this paper are to capture more knowledge on managing product data and to provide users effective search capability. We define the metadata model for product data defined in STEP AP 203 and manage the metadata from product data in a repository system. Because we utilize the standard formats such as STEP for product data and RDF for metadata, the proposed approach can be applied to various fields of industries independently on commercial products.

리스크 관리규격의 제품안전경영프로그램에 대한 적용 (Application of Risk Management Standards for Product Safety Management Program)

  • This study reviewed the national standards for risk management to judge whether they are suitable for a product safety management program. Among the standards issued from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, and UK, the risk management guideline (AS/NZS 4360: 2000) issued jointly from both Australia and New Zealand have better features for product safety management program than any other risk management standards in view point of broad definition of risk concept including opportunities of loss and gain, stepwise composition of management processes applicable iteratively, and integrable form of structure addible to existing management practice. Comparing the three product safety management programs suggested by several authors yielded common features of product safety management program model: (1) organization for product safety, (2) risk identification, (3) risk evaluation, (4) risk treatment, (5) monitoring/communication, and (6) documentation. All of these activities can be performed within risk management framework proposed by AS/NZS 4360.

  • One of the recent hot issues in the manufacturing business is how to incorporate environmental attributes into product and process design. Design for environment considers the potential environmental impact of a product throughout its life-cycle. In the case of something breaks, it can become waste immediately, hence reliability and durability is the essential part of product design. This paper presents reliability technology for sustainable product design to improve the product longevity that extends performance life, serviceability and durability. The presented method will help to develop a sound design and avoid weak links to minimize the waste.

  • This research presents distributed database and knowledge-base modeling approach for intelligent product design system. The product design information in this study is described by a collection of rules and design knowledge that are utilized according to the product development procedures. In this work, a network-based architecture has been developed to enable dispersed designers to simultaneously accomplish remote design tasks. A client/server communication diagram has also been proposed to facilitate consistent primary information modeling for multi-user access and reuse of designed results. An intelligent product design system has been studied with the concepts of distributed database and network-based architecture in order to support concurrent engineering design and automatic design part assembly. The system provides the capability of composing new designs from proper design elements stored in the database and knowledge-base. The distributed intelligent product design is applied to the design of an automobile part as an example.

  • This paper is concerned with the set-up of the CE(Concurrent Engineering) model for the shortening of new product development. Recently, the situation of the new product development has been drastically changed. Customers require cheaper, better, stronger products in shorter product cycle time. To cope with this requirements from customers, engineers must accept new paradigm based on the CE and some special tools. This paper shows a tool, CE which is a good for shortening of new product development. So, CE was applied broadly in whole process of new product development and we could make it very successfully in quality, function, cost and developing time.

  • 제조물 책임은 자동차 산업에서 매우 중요한 규제 요소로 작용하고 있으며, 이에 대한 면책 수단으로 제정된 것이 ISO 26262 국제 표준이다. 자율주행자동차에서는 제조물 책임의 중요성이 더욱 높아지기 때문에 추가로 ISO/PAS 21448이 제정되었으나, 이 역시 주로 센싱 단계에만 적용이 가능하기 때문에 제조물 책임을 어느 정도 면책시킬 수 있으나 완전한 면책은 어렵다. 이에 따라 자율주행자동차의 상용화를 위해서는 완전한 면책수단으로서 새로운 국제 표준이 개발될 때까지 한시적으로 법체계의 개선이 반드시 필요하다.

  • Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) prepared by emulsion polymerization has broad applications for additive such as paint binder, adhesive for wood and paper due to its low glass transition temperature which help to plasticize substrate resins. Since emulsion polymerization has a disadvantage that surfactant and ionic initiator degrade properties of the product polymer, poly (vinyl acetate-eo-ethyl acrylate) (VAc-EA) was synthesized using potassium persulfate as catalyst and polyvinylalcohol (PVA) as protective colloid to prevent the degradation. The copolymer latex product was internally plasticized and has enhanced adhesion, water resistance during VAc-EA emulsion polymerization. No coagulation and complete conversion occur with the reactant mixture of 10 mmol/L potassium persulfate, 10 mmol/L poly ( vinyl alcohol) (PVA 17). As the concentrations of PVA increase, the viscosity becomes increase.

  • In the last decades, various integral formulas associated with Bessel functions of different kinds as well as Bessel functions themselves, have been studied and a noteworthy amount of work can be found in the literature. Following up, we present two definite integral formulas involving the product of generalized Bessel function associated with orthogonal polynomials. Also, some intriguing special cases of our main results have been discussed.
