Measurement of Numerical Aperture of Graded-index Plastic Optical Fiber by Using a Variable Aperture (입사광의 크기 조절을 통한 경사굴절률 플라스틱 광섬유의 수치구경 측정기법)

  • There are technical difficulties in measuring the numerical apertures of multi-mode gradient-index plastic optical fibers (GI-POFs) due to their strong speckle noise originating from dopants, non-uniformity of gradient-index profile, and multi-mode interference. Therefore, we propose a new method of obtaining the numerical aperture by controlling the size of the incident laser beam and measuring the numerical aperture of GI-POF. The results show that we can get a value for the numerical aperture of GI-POF very similar to that measured by the conventional method. We can also obtain the optimum launching condition of input beam and maximum coupling efficiency.

Design of the Near Field Microwave Guide Type of Probe Having Enhanced High Transmission Efficiency and Smaller Beam Spot Area (고 투과 효율과 소형 빔 스팟 면적을 갖는 근접장 마이크로웨이브 도파관 탐침의 설계)

  • In this article, we propose a near field microwave scanning probe structure in which two short conducting rods are attached to the center of the ridged(H-type) aperture, thereby reducing significantly the beam spot area while maintaining the high transmission efficiency through the output coupling H-type(ridged) aperture. Here the two short parallel conducting rods seem to play an important role of concentrating the transmitted electromagnetic energy through the H-type aperture and so reducing the beam area for high resolution. For validation of the proposed theory, the near field waveguide probe is fabricated according to the simulated results and its return loss characteristics versus frequencies are measured. The comparison between theory and experiment is seen to be in good agreements.

  • The radiation characteristics of a microstrip circularly-polarized aperture-patch $8\times8$ array antenna are investigated at X-band. The radiator consists of a truncated square aperture on the ground plane with an inclined rectangular patch inside, and it is coupled by a microstrip line on the opposite side of the ground. The element spacing of the array was chosen as $0.8\lambda_0$so as to minimize the mutual coupling and maximize the gain. A corporate feed network was employed to distribute the power to each element through four Wilkinson and two T-junction dividers. Measurement results for the $8\times8$ array at 10 GHz showed a directivity of 26.3 dBi, a gain of 22.2 dBi, an axial ratio of 2.97 dB, and a side lobe level of -12.7dB. It was observed that when the array size increases, the directivity increases while the efficiency decreases.

  • In this paper, using newly proposed size reduction technique, the aperture coupled microstrip patch antenna for a repeater system in a mobile communication cellular band (824~849 MHz) is developed with a wide bandwidth, small size, light weight, and low cost. The resonant frequency of microstrip antennas is related to the electric field distribution of the radiating patch. The field strength of $TM_{01}$ mode of a rectangular patch antenna is strongest at each of the extremities of the radiating patch, but negligible at center. Therefore, the size of a patch antenna can be effectively minimized by inserting the narrow rectangular dielectric into just under the edges of the resonant Patch. This Paper also proposes the bandwidth improvement technique by using under-coupling technique with a tuning stub. The VSWR is less than 1.5 : 1 for the whole cellular band. The simulation tool was HFSS, Agilent Technologies, Inc.

  • In this paper, a novel dual and wide band aperture stacked patch antenna for Cellular/PCS/IMT-2000 base station is presented. It consists of single microstrip patch having notches along the radiating patch, two dielectric substrates and a form material. To achieve wide band characteristic, we utilize the coupling effect between the notched patch and the resonant aperture in the ground plane and by properly cutting notches on the patch, an aperture stacked patch antenna could be designed to yield dual frequency operation. By the proper choice of resonant aperture size and height of a foam material, dual and wide band characteristic could be realized the measured impedance bandwidth(1:1.5 VSWR) of designed antenna at lower band(860 MHz) reaches 77 MHz and covers the Cellular CDMA band(824∼894 MHz). The measured impedance bandwidth(1:1.5 VSMR) of the designed antenna at upper band(1,960 MHz) is about 550 MHz and covers both the PCS band(1,750∼l,870 MHz) and the for-2000 band(1,920∼2,170 MHz). Good broadside radiation with high gain(5.65∼7.4 dBi) characteristics have also been observed.

  • This paper is designed and producted the microstrip patch antenna which used aperture coupled feed structure, and had a comparatively hish gain and headband characteristic with a PCS substitution repeater antenna. The proposed antenna transformed a coupled slot into a H-type in order to improve a characteristic of a general aperture coupled feed antenna. It is this H-type form slot reduces back lobe from the antenna backside at the same time that a coupling between a power feed and patches is iccreased, and to have maximized a gain of an antenna. As a result of having measured the antenna which the VSWR was 1.5 or below and tied up the gain than 7.5dBi in the $1750{\sim}1870$[MHz] that was a PCS substitution, and a beamwidth became in $80^{\circ}$ and radio waves shadow was local, but accomplishment did PCS mobile communication service in building me smoothly, but confirmed what practical use can become.

  • An analysis method for obtaining transient response of electromagnetic pulse(EMP) coupled via a slot aperture into a parallel-plate waveguide, is considered. The mixed-potential integral equation(MPIE), in which the vector and scalar potential Green's functions for the unknown equivalent magnetic surface current of the aperture in parallel-plate region are expressed in closed forms derived by use of the improved complex image method, is formulated. When the method of moments(MoM) is used to solve the MPIE, the matrix-fill time is significantly reduced because of closed-form Green's functions. In order to check the validity of the present method, the numerical results obtained by the present method are compared with those obtained by the previous method. Fairly good agreements between them are observed.

  • This paper presents the design and fabrication of a shaped-beam array antenna which will be used for a PCS basestation using structure that is coupled to a microstrip line by an aperture on the interening ground plane. The shaped-beam pattern is obtained by an antenna synthesis method. An array antenna considering the mutual coupling between array elements patches) and a feeding network are designed by CAD tools. The feeding network is designed by using the Wilkinson power divider to obtain the optimized shaped-beam. The designed results are compared with the measured data.

  • In this paper, a novel planar spiral antenna of multi-tabs is proposed for wireless power transmission system based on low frequency magnetic inductive coupling. The proposed antenna has higher transmission efficiency than conventional antennas such a rectangular spiral antenna and a spiral antenna. Also, it has a useful property of uniform power transmission in the region of the antenna aperture. For verification, a transmitting antenna and a receiving one for a wireless power transmission system using magnetic inductive coupling of 132 kHz low frequency are designed and tested. The transmitting antenna has three-tabs spiral of unequal-space for higher uniform magnetic coupling in the antenna aperture. For reducing the receiving antenna size, two receiving antennas of unequal space two-tabs on one-side and series double sides as well are designed, respectively. From measurement, transmission efficiency of the proposed antennas is improved up to $3{\sim}10$ dB compared to conventional antennas.

  • The problem of a plane wave impinging upon a semi-infinite paralle-plate waveguide is investigated. The interior fields can be analyzed by converting the initial field into vaveguide modes. Kirchhoff approximation is usually made at the waveguide aperture in the literature. In this paper, a modified approximation is made using the Uniform Gemetrical Theory of Diffraction(UTD). Numerical results show excellent agreement between UTD-supplemented mode-matching solution and UTD solution.
