Traction Control of Automobiles using a Disturbance Observer with the Approach of Sliding Mode Control

  • This paper presents an automobile traction control system by using a sliding mode controller with disturbance observer for estimating the car-body speed. First, we show that the control system, which combines an automobile system and a disturbance observer, can be divided into a controllable system and an estimated one. And, we found out that the effect of the traction control and ABS depends on the air resistance of the car. Then, the sliding mode control system is designed using the obtained combined system. And finally, the stability of this control system is verified by simulation and it shows a very satisfactory results.

  • For this study, a new hydraulic control unit which designed in compact compared to the currently manufactured hydraulic control unit for ABS has been introduced and its experimental model has been made. Based on the basic principle as ABS using braking force characteristics against slip ratio of tire, half car model bench tester were designed and made to make an analysis of braking effect of the new hydraulic control unit. Experiment for slip ratio characteristics of tire has been carried out using half car model bench tester and with the results of this experiment and control experiment of the new hyraulic control unit, the experiment result of the characteristics of tire and control experiment were compared to find out their correspondence. And furthermore, slip ratio characteristics of the new hydraulic control unit has been studied based on the experiment result of slip ratio characteristics of tire through simulation and compared with experiment result.

  • The prevalence of microprocessor-based controllers in automotive systems has greatly increased the need for tools which can be used to validate and test control systems over their full range of operation. The objective of this paper is to develop a real time simulator of traction control system by the methodology of using hardware-in-loop simulation based on a personal computer. By use of this simulator, the analysis of commercial electronic control units and components for TCS were performed successfully. The simulator of this research can be applied to development of more advanced control systems(suck as vehicle dynamics control system) and other automotive system.

  • In this paper, a mathematical vehicle model, the braking force control parameters, the wheel control logic, and vehicle control strategy are presented, in order to analyze the dynamic characteristics of a vehicle equipped with ABS(Antilock Brake System). The full vehicle dynamics model is constructed with sprung mass, brake system, and wheels to verify control algorithms. The valve control algorithms are designed with the wheel accelerations and slip ratio take into consideration. Theses algorithms are applied to the front and rear wheels independently. Simulation is performed under the wet road condition at initial braking speed of 60 [km/h].

  • Antilock brake system(ABS) prevent the wheels of road vehicle from locking up and skidding so that the braking force is from static friction instead of kinetic friction. Therefore ABS helps drivers maintain steering control during breaking situation particularly at an emergency stopping situation. So when trying to stop the road vehicle it is best to have the most friction possible for faster deceleration ABS keep the wheels turning which means there is more friction between the tires of vehicles and the road surface.   • In this paper, an antilock brake system (ABS) for commercial vehicles is studied by considering the design of a fuzzy Logic controller with pulse width modulation (PWM). PWM method is used for generating solenoid valve inputs in order to cope with the chattering problem caused by the conventional on/off control The sliding mode observer is designed to estimate the vehicle longitudinal velocity and it is used to calculate the wheel slip ratio. The effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm was validated by simulations performed with a nonlinear 14-DOF vehicle model including the dynamics of the brakes.

  • In this study, to investigate a characteristics of slip ratio control of H.C.U for ABS, half car model tester were developed and a new H.C.U. was compactly designed comparing to the commercical H.C.U. for ABS. In half car model tester, variable inertia wheel has been used to load the car weights and braking forces according to the road surface conditions which were realized by pneumatic cylinder. And solenoid valves using P.W.M. (Pulse Width Modulation) method were installed in the new H.C.U The slip ratio characteristics of tire had been measured using half car model tester and the results were used in the control simulation for a new H.C.U.

  • This paper presents a simple but effective DYC algorithm which enhances vehicle lateral stability by using an anti=lock brake system (ABS). In the proposed algorithm, only the front outer wheel is controlled during cornering maneuver instead of controlling all four wheels because the wheel has the largest role in DYC and it is easy and simple to control the only one wheel. An ABS Hardware - In -The -Loop Simulation ( HILS) system that may be used to realistically test real vehicle dynamic behavior in a lab is used for evaluating the proposed DYC algorithm in severe situations where a vehicle is destabilized without DYC . The HILS results show that the proposed DYC algorithm has the potential of maintaining vehicle stability in some dangerous situations.

  • Various convenient systems which are telecommunication and navigation system and safety system which include Antilock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control, Adaptive Cruise Control have been developed and applied to meet customer needs and each standards since vehicles are used. The complexity of new electronics become significant reason of breakdown especially embedded software failures. Hardware reliability is almost stabilized with long history but software reliability needs more improvements through reliability researches. This new challenge will improve software reliability to clear its overall failures in vehicles. This paper introduces some software reliability models and evaluates embedded software reliability using failure data which occurred during operating.

  • Anti-lock Brake System has been developed to reduce tendency for wheel lock and improve vehicle control during sudden braking on slippery road surfaces. This is achieved by controlling the braking pressure, avoiding wheel lock, while retaining handling and brake performance. This paper is concerned about pressurecharacteristics of hydraulic modulator. Experimental sets which is consists of hydraulic modulator, duty controller, pressure regulator, pressure senset is consuructed. System modelling and computer simulation are performed for comparison with experimental results. Brake wheel pressure are measured under various driving pulse. The result of experiment show fairly agreement with the simulation. As a result, it is known that wheel pressure is affected by duty ratio, orifice diameter through computer simulation.
