  • A naval surface-to-air missile is an effective countermeasure against increasing threats of anti-ship missiles. Optimal operation is imperative for high survivability due to limited defense resources of a warship. This paper addresses a problem of optimal engagement to maximize the overall probability of intercept under Shoot-Look-Shoot tactics. The problem is formulated and analyzed with consideration of a realistic single-shoot probability model. The analysis shows that a global solution is achieved for some engagement scenarios. A numerical algorithm to optimize the overall probability of intercept is suggested. An illustrative example is provided to verify our results.

  • A practical recursive WLS (weighted least squares) algorithm is proposed to estimate relative range using LOS (line-of-sight) information for ASM (anti-ship missile) application. Apart from the previous approaches based on the EKF (extended Kalman filter), to ensure good convergence properties in long range engagement situations, the proposed scheme utilizes LOS rate measurements instead of conventionally used LOS angle measurements. The estimation error property for the proposed filter is investigated and a simple error compensator is devised to enhance its estimation error performances. Simulation results indicate that the proposed filter produces very accurate range estimates with extremely small computations.

  • Anti-surface missiles have been the most dangerous threat to the surface ships, therefore analyzing the defense effectiveness of surface ships against diverse anti-surface missiles attack strategies is very important to evaluate and anticipate the naval combat ship's abilities in terms of AAW (Anti-Air Warfare). In this paper, we don't study on the defense effectiveness of a ship against a missile, but focus on the defense effectiveness for surface ships against multiple missiles specialized in strategies of anti-surface missiles; ripple fire attack and simultaneous time on target attack (STOT). So, we conduct a variety of monte-carlo simulations with high-fidelity simulators, analyze the measure of defense effectiveness for the key factors of strategies and evaluate the effects and possible interactions of several factors through the analysis of the design of experiment (DOE).

  • This paper presents the results of new error analysis on the veering of marine target with the concept of frequency of occurrence, and shows how to apply the midcourse guidance errors of anti-ship missile. The veering error would be a dominant factor in the midcourse guidance errors with flight time increase. This study suggests the reasonable application method of the veering error based on the characteristics of abnormal error, and describes the tailoring method including trade-off between the midcourse guidance range of veering target and the value of frequency of occurrence on veering error.

  • A technical review of Soviet/Russian supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles is presented. The supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles is one of the weapons for asymmetric power. The supersonic speed of the missiles is very useful both for attacking a time critical target and for improving target-penetration characteristics of the missile. The survivability of the missiles has also been increased by the improved concept of operation. Supersonic cruise missiles is greatly affected by the evolution of propulsion technology. Early supersonic cruise missiles adopt turbojet engines and rocket motors. The use of the integrated rocket-ramjet engine reduced the size of the supersonic missile, so today's supersonic cruise missiles are suitable to be deployed in various platforms. Nowadays, export versions of the missiles are actively being developed.

  • This research describes the functional requirements of anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) defense systems, which depend on the threat characteristics of the ASBM. Recently, China has carried out a training launch of the DF-21D strategic countermeasures for the placement of Korean terminal high-altitude air defense (THAAD). The ASBM is being used as a primary means of attacking aircraft carriers, using an anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) strategy. Considering the missile technology connection between China and North Korea, there is a very high probability that North Korea already owns an ASBM. From this point of view, work with Aegis operational concepts provided implications for an ASBM threat. Utilizing quality function deployment (QFD) based on the operational concepts, the functional requirement were calculated.

  • It is crucial to set up early the required performance of surface ship for preventing the risk factors such as an excess of performance, cost and period in development stage. In this study, MOP and MOE are proposed to establish the method for deriving alternatives, MOP represents the defensive effect for anti ship missiles and MOE is the ratio of cost and performance. The 16 engagement scenarios which selectively install RF decoy, RF jammer, CIWS and anti air missile are suggested. The simulation results by using NORAM tool operated by ROK Navy show that the ship survivability is 0.605~0.975 and MOP is 0.301~0.887. The analyzed results represent the operating scenario with RF decoy, RF jammer and short range anti air missile is the best cost and effectiveness measure.

  • In this paper, in order to analyze the performance of a decoy system for ship defense against an anti-ship missile(ASM) with an infrared image(IIR) seeker, the modeling and engagement simulation program is introduced. The IIR seeker on the ASM detects the infrared signal of ship from a distance and approaches the ship based on proportional navigation guidance(PNG) or impact angle control guidance(IACG). Hence the guidance performance of the ASM is basically depend on the target tracking algorithm of the seeker as well as the infrared signal of the ship. Using the developed program, we can investigate the effect of the ship decoy system such as flares and surface cooling system of the ship with respect to various kinds of tracking algorithms of the IIR seeker of the ASM.

For the mission of a ship, naval combat system manages features and constraints of each weapon system. Proper treats of each weapon system's conditions guarantee effective performances of naval combat system. In this paper, the relationship of anti-air weapon system's on board position and self-defence effectiveness against anti-surface missiles is studied

  • Modem anti-ship missiles employ complex and sophisticated guidance laws to hit the target and enhance their survivability by executing additional maneuvers. However, such maneuvers may cause the target to move out of the missile seeker's Field-Of-View (FOV). Maintaining seeker lock-on during an engagement is a critical factor for missile guidance. In this paper, a guidance law switching logic that maintains seeker lock-on and a simple guidance law that keeps the target look angle of the seeker constant is proposed. The proposed method can be used for the terminal homing phase, and can be switched from any kind of guidance laws if a proper switching condition is satisfied. The minimum and maximum flight time calculation method in consideration of the missile maneuver limit and the FOV of the seeker is also provided.
