Design of a Pendulum-type Anti-rolling System for USSV and Verification Based on Roll Damping Coefficient (무인반잠수정의 진자식 횡동요 저감 장치 설계 및 감쇠계수 기반 검증)

  • The roll motion of a general vessel, which is more influenced by resonance as compared to other motions, adversely affects the passenger and hull. Therefore, reducing the roll motion through an anti-rolling system is critical, and most ships use various devices such as anti-rolling tanks, bilge keels, and fin stabilizers to accomplish this. In this study, a simplified model is developed for the application of an anti-rolling device for unmanned semi-submersible vessels. The applied anti-rolling device is installed on the stern and stem of a ship using a pair of servo motors with added weight, and the motor is controlled through the Arduino. The moment of the motor is designed and implemented based on a mathematical model such that it is calculated through the restoring force according to the heel angle of the ship. The performance of the proposed system was verified by utilizing the roll damping coefficient calculated by the free-roll decay test and logarithmic decrement method and was validated by a towing tank test. The system is expected to be used for unmanned vessels to perform sustainable missions.

  • Reduction of a ship's rolling is the most important performance requirement for improving the safety of the crew on board and preventing damage to cargos as well as improving the comfort of the ride. A mass driving anti-.oiling system (MD-ARS) might be one candidate of several systems against the ship's rolling. As the movable range of the mass on the ship is finite, the control system must include restriction on the mass position to protect the device and the ship. This restriction usually causes windup phenomenon and control performance is deteriorated seriously. We adopt anti-windup technique to improve the control performance and demonstrate its efficiency by simulation.

In this paper, three types of MD-ARS, two passive and one active devices, are developed for small ships. After they are installed on the cabin of the small leisure boat, respectively, a series of test is conducted before and after operating them. Through the test, it is confirmed that the roll responses of the ship are pretty well reduced by the system.

  • The rolling motion of a floating body makes crews and passengers exhausted and/or applies forces to the structure to cause damage; it might even upset the body. Therefore, almost all ships are equipped with bilge keels for anti-rolling; in special cases, an anti-rolling tank(ART) or fin stabilizer or gyroscope could be installed. But an ART requires a large capacity to install it, and a fin stabilizer and gyroscope need great costs to install and also many expenses to operate. The authors suggest the use of an anti-rolling pendulum(ARP), and they showed that the ARP is effective to reduce rolling by experiments and via a Runge-Kutta analysis. This paper introduces the linearized 2 degrees of freedom with a viscous damping system for a ship equipped with ARP; it also shows the validation of the linearized analysis for the ship's roll motion. The paper proposes an optimum ARP on the basis of the justified model. The case of the 7.7kg model with ship 20g ARP of a mass ratio of 0.26%, is the most effective for reducing roll motion. The paper shows the ARPs with various mass ratios are effective for reducing the roll motion of a ship by free decaying roll experiments.

Coupled Motion Simulation of the Mobile Harbor and Anti-Rolling Devices in Waves

  • The Mobile Harbor(MH) is a new transportation platform that can load and unload containers to and from very large container ships in the sea. This loading and unloading by crane can be performed with only very small movements of the MH in waves because MH is operated outside of the harbor. For this reason, an anti-rolling tank(ART) and an active mass driving system(AMD) were designed to reduce MH's roll motion, especially at the natural frequency of MH. In the conceptual design stage, it is difficult to confirm the design result of theses anti-rolling devices without modeling and simulation tools. Therefore, the coupled MH and anti-rolling devices' dynamic equations in waves were derived and a simulation program that can analyze the roll reduction performance in various conditions, such as sea state, wave direction, and so on, was developed. The coupled equations are constructed as an eight degrees of freedom (DOF) motion that consists of MH's six DOF dynamics and the ART's and AMD's control variables. In order to conveniently include the ART's and AMD's control dynamics in the time domain, MH's radiated wave force was described by an impulse response function derived by the damping coefficient obtained in the frequency domain, and wave exciting forces such as Froude-Krylov force and diffraction force and nonlinear buoyancy were calculated at every simulation time interval. Finally, the roll reduction performances of the designed anti-rolling devices were successfully assessed in the various loading and wave conditions by using a developed simulation program.

  • We have investigated the usefulness cf active stabilizing system to reduce ship rolling under disturbances, using varying reaction cf the flaps. In the proposed anti-rolling system for a ship, the flaps as the actuator are installed on the stem to reject rolling motion induced by disturbances like wave. The action induced by flaps which depends on power of disturbances am take the ship balance. Especially, in this study we identify the controlled system under the undefined system structure using spectral analysis and experimental studies. Based on these informations, we design the controller to evaluate the usefulness of the proposed system.

Anti-slosh effect of a horizontal porous baffle in a swaying/rolling rectangular tank: Analytical and experimental approaches

  • The horizontal porous baffle and its effect as an anti-slosh device have been investigated intensively in a swaying and rolling rectangular tank. To accurately assess the level at which porous baffles reduce liquid sloshing, the Matched Eigenfunction Expansion Method (MEEM) has been utilized as an analytical tool. The velocity potentials in the horizontal baffle-covered fluid region are expressed by the sum of the homogeneous and particular solutions to avoid solving the complex dispersion equation. By applying an equivalent linearized quadratic loss model, the nonlinear algebraic equation is derived and solved by implementing the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme. To prove the validity of the present theoretical model, a series of experiments have been conducted with different centered horizontal porous baffles with varying porosities and submerged depths in a swaying and rolling rectangular tank. Reasonably good agreements are obtained regarding the analytical solutions and the experiment's findings. The influence of porosity, submerged depth, and length of a centered horizontal porous baffle on anti-slosh performance have been analyzed, especially at resonance modes. The developed predictive tool can potentially provide guidelines for optimal design of the horizontal porous baffle.

  • The effects of an anti-rolling tank (ART) on vessel motions were numerically investigated. The potential-based BEM vessel motion simulation program and particle-based computational fluid dynamics program were dynamically coupled and used to perform a simulation of vessel motions with ART. From the time domain simulation results, the response amplitude operators for sway and roll motions were obtained and compared with the corresponding experimental and numerical results. Because the main purpose of ART was only to reduce roll motions, it was important to show that the natural properties of a floating vessel were not changed by the effects of ART. Various ART filling ratios and several ART positions were considered. In conclusion, ART only reduced the roll motion regardless of its filling ratio and position.

Properties of De/Anti-icing Fluid for High Speed Railway Rolling Stock Based on Propylene-glycol Containing Water Repellent Agent (발수 성분을 포함하는 프로필렌글리콜(PG) 기반 고속철도차량용 제·방빙액의 특성)

  • As a chemical de-icing method, propylene glycol de-icing fluid is applicable for melting ice caused by snow and ice adhering to the lower part of high-speed rail rolling stock and bogie parts in winter. By spraying propylene-glycol de-icing fluid on high-speed rail rolling stock and bogie parts in advance to minimize snow adhesion, ice-melting efficiency can be further improved. In the case of high-speed rail rolling stock, even if propylene-glycol de-icing fluid is sprayed, the anti-icing performance is poor because the fluid is almost lost on the surface of the vehicle when operating at high speed. In this study, in order to prevent freezing caused by snow and ice adhering to the lower part of high-speed rail rolling stock and bogie parts, we have investigated the properties of propylene-glycol de/anti-icing fluid containing water-repellent agents that prevent surface freezing. We tried to find the optimal component for de/anti-icing fluid for high-speed rail rolling stock by evaluating the ice melting performance, contact angle, and anti-icing performance according to the types of water-repellent agent. As a result of the evaluation, it was confirmed that an de/anti-icing fluid containing an ethoxysilane-type water repellent agent was most suitable.
