  • Background Nasal tip support is an essential consideration for rhinoplasty in East Asians. There are many techniques to improve tip projection, and among them, the columellar strut is the most popular technique. However, the conventional design is less supportive for rotating the tip. The amount of harvestable septal cartilage is relatively small in East Asians. For an optimal outcome, we propose an L-shaped design for applying the columellar strut. Methods To evaluate the anthropometric outcomes, the change in nasal tip projection and the columella-labial angle were analyzed by comparing preoperative and postoperative photographs. The anthropometric study group consisted of 25 patients who underwent the same operative technique of an L-shaped strut graft using septal cartilage and were followed up for more than 9 months. Results There were statistically significant differences between the preoperative and postoperative values in the nasal tip projection ratio and columella-labial angle. We did not observe any complications directly related to the L-shaped columellar strut in the anthropometric study group. Conclusions The L-shaped columellar strut has advantages not only in the controlling of tip projection and rotation, but in that it needs a smaller amount of cartilage compared to the conventional septal extension graft. It can therefore be an alternative technique for nasal tip plasty when there is an insufficient amount of harvestable septal cartilage.

  • Anthropometric studies and multicultural research on body changes are fundamental and important data for domestic apparel industry and for globalization of women's clothing marketing. The objective of this study is to compare the general body measurements and shoulder angles of Korean and U. S. elderly women to supply basic data for the apparel design. The anthropometric data was collected including both direct and indirect measurements of 272 women over the age of 55 in Korean (subject = 123) and the U.S (subject = 149). The statistical methods used for the analysis of measurement data are the factor and cluster analysis respectively. The results of the factor analysis indicated that 5 factors can be extracted in Korean and 4 factors can be extracted in the U. S. from 15 body measurements to explain the variance. The results of cluster analysis by shoulder slope angle and forward displacement of the shoulder of Korean and the U. S. women classified them in three groups, cluster 1, cluster 2 and cluster 3 respectively.

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the anthropometric and clinical risk factors and the prevalence of sarcopenia in women aged 40 to 49 years. METHODS: The study design is a cross-sectional research and a total of 2,055 participants were included. The participants were divided into two groups based on their skeletal muscle mass index score. One hundred and twenty-six individuals were assigned to a sarcopenia group, and 1,939 were assigned to a normal group. The following variables were analyzed: age, height, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, skeletal muscle mass index anthropometric measure, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, blood laboratory tests, fasting glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, and smoking and drinking smoking statuses. RESULTS: The prevalence of sarcopenia was 6.5% (95% CI: 5.33-7.92). Anthropometric variables, such as height, BMI, and waist circumference, showed significance differences between the two groups (p < .05), except for weight variable (p > .05). In terms of blood pressure and blood lab tests, the systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, triglyceride, and total cholesterol were all significant risk factors for sarcopenia in the two groups. (p < .05). CONCLUSION: This study identified risk factors and the prevalence of sarcopenia among community-dwelling middle-aged women.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the guidelines for Medic Work Table (MWT) based on the anthropometric data of medical technologists. Background: Users' anthropometric data such as sitting height, sitting elbow height, knee height, and so on are significant factors for designing comfortable and useful furniture. Thus, many guidelines for different types of desks and chairs based on the users' anthropometric data have been suggested to many researchers. However, few researches have been conducted to provide design guidelines for MWT for blood collecting task. Medical technologists often use their upper extremities to perform blood collecting task with high repetitions. These repeated motions could be a critical factor in the prevalence rate of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs). Therefore, a study on ergonomic design of MWT would be essential in preventing the WMSDs and improving the quality of the working environment of medical technologists. Method: This study suggested design guidelines for ergonomic MWT by focusing on the heights of the upper side and underside, depths of the inside and outside, and width of MWT through anthropometric studies and literature reviews. Afterwards, a new MWT was made using the suggested design guidelines for this study. Five healthy medical technologists participated to evaluate the original MWT and new MWT. All participants took part in the range of motion (ROM) test, electromyography (EMG) muscle activity test, and usability test to validate the suggested guidelines in this study. EMG signals of related muscles (Flexor Carpi Ulnaris, Extensor Carpi Ulnaris, Deltoid Anterior, and Biceps Branchii) were recorded through the surface electromyography system from both the original MWT and the new MWT. The ROM test of the shoulder and elbow flexion was also assessed using motion sensors. Results: The newly designed MWT showed decreased ROMs of the shoulder and elbow up to 22% and 18% compared to the original MWT. The muscle activities in the new MWT also showed a decrease of 13% in Anterior Deltoid, 6% in Biceps Brachii, 5% in Flexor Carpi Ulnaris, and 8% in Extensor Carpi Ulnaris muscle groups, compared to the original MWT. In the usability test, the satisfaction score of the new MWT was also 56.1% higher than that of the original MWT. Conclusion: This study suggested guidelines for designing MWT and validating the guidelines through qualitative and quantitative analyses. The results of motion analysis, muscle activity, and usability tests demonstrated that the newly designed MWT may lead to less physical stress, less awkward posture, and better physical user interface. Application: The recommended guidelines of the MWT would be helpful information for designing an ergonomic MWT that reduces physical loads and improves the performance of many medical technologists.
