  • In this paper, the single-layer slotted waveguide array antenna is designed, which consists of two par the slot plate and the structure of waveguide. The key difficulty in mass production is the realization of perfect electrical contact between the two parts. Therefore the single-layer slotted waveguide array antenna is presented with a dumbbell patch and a choke. The choke can prevent from the leakage between the slot plate and waveguide, while the choke in the adjacent waveguide incurs space dissipation. To reduce the spacing of antennas about a dumbbell patch is utilized. the 16${\times}$16 array antenna gain of 27.2 ㏈ with 45 % aperture efficiency is obtained.

  • A single-feed composite cavity-backed four-arm curl antenna is presented for use in global positioning systems (GPS). Its primary radiating element is fed by a vacant-quarter printed ring, which helps the antenna directly match to a $50-{\Omega}$ coaxial line and produce a good circular polarization (CP). The cavity-backed reflector is employed to improve the CP radiation characteristics in terms of 3-dB axial ratio (AR) beamwidth and minimum AR value. The optimized design with an overall size of $90{\times}90{\times}25mm^3$ ($0.4725{\lambda}_o{\times}0.4725{\lambda}_o{\times}0.13{\lambda}_o$ at 1,575 MHz) results in a ${\mid}S_{11}{\mid}<-10dB$ bandwidth of 8.66% (1,514-1,651 MHz) and a 3-dB AR bandwidth of 2.23% (1,555-1,590 MHz). The antenna radiates a widebeam right-hand circular polarization and operates with a measured radiation efficiency greater than 90% within its impedance matching bandwidth.

  • A shaped Cassegrain antenna is designed from the condition of the same path length at the equi-phase surface by using the conservation of energy and Snell's law. In order to improve the phase error efficiency of aperture surface, the surface profile of the main and sub-reflectors is found to satisfy the power distribution and the equi-phase condition at the aperture surface. The sidelobe levels of 36.4 dB and 33.9 dB are achieved at the AZ and EL planes, respectively from numerical calculation by physical optics method at Ku band and the directivity of designed antenna is 10 percent greater than that of conventional antenna.

  • A wideband circularly polarized (CP) antenna with a single feed is proposed for use in global navigation satellite systems. Its primary radiation elements are composed of two orthogonal bowtie dipoles, which are equipped with double-printed vacant-quarter rings to allow direct matching of the antenna to a single $50-{\Omega}$ coaxial line and to produce CP radiation. The crossed bowtie dipole is appropriately incorporated with a planar metallic reflector to produce the desired unidirectional radiation pattern as well as to achieve a wideband characteristic in terms of impedance matching and axial ratio (AR) bandwidths. The designed antenna was fabricated and measured. The prototype antenna with an overall 1.2-GHz frequency size of $0.48{\lambda}_o{\times}0.48{\lambda}_o{\times}0.25{\lambda}_o$ produced a measured ${\mid}S_{11}{\mid}$<-10 dB bandwidth of 1.05-1.79 GHz and a measured 3-dB AR bandwidth of 1.12-1.64 GHz. It also showed right-hand CP radiation with a small gain variation (${\pm}0.3dB$) and high radiation efficiency (>93%) over the operational bandwidth.

  • In this paper, we propose a new Mushroom-like PBG concepts for designing with forbidden frequency band-gap at low frequency. These design rules are based on enhancing the capacitance per unit area using modified top-patch of mushroom PBG with no increase on the overall thickness of the substrate board. Also, in this paper, a new approach to suppress the surface wave from antenna is proposed by embedding compact mushroom PBG in the substrate. Comparisons between the results from a conventional patch antenna to a patch antenna on a PBG substrate show that the reduction in the surface wave level is remarkable. This can be observed in the radiation pattern and the maximum gain. The maximum gain for reference patch antenna is $6.43dB{\imath}$ at 5.37 GHz, while the maximum gain for the patch antenna with normal mushroom and vane mushroom PBG is $7.24dB{\imath}\;and\;7.53dB{\imath}$at 5.14 GHz. The back radiation is also considerably reduced; this will lead, of course, to an increase in the antenna efficiency.

  • This paper presents design and specific absorption rate analysis of a 2.4 GHz wearable patch antenna on a conventional and electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) ground planes, under normal and bent conditions. Wearable materials are used in the design of the antenna and EBG surfaces. A woven fabric (Zelt) is used as a conductive material and a 3 mm thicker Wash Cotton is used as a substrate. The dielectric constant and tangent loss of the substrate are 1.51 and 0.02 respectively. The volume of the proposed antenna is $113{\times}96.4{\times}3mm^3$. The metamaterial surface is used as a high impedance surface which shields the body from the hazards of electromagnetic radiations to reduce the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). For on-body analysis a three layer model (containing skin, fats and muscles) of human arm is used. Antenna employing the EBG ground plane gives safe value of SAR (i.e. 1.77W/kg<2W/kg), when worn on human arm. This value is obtained using the safe limit of 2 W/kg, averaged over 10g of tissue, specified by the International Commission of Non Ionization Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The SAR is reduced by 83.82 % as compare to the conventional antenna (8.16 W/kg>2W/kg). The efficiency of the EBG based antenna is improved from 52 to 74 %, relative to the conventional counterpart. The proposed antenna can be used in wearable electronics and smart clothing.

  • In this paper we proposed the tag antenna with a low performance distortion from an attached surface material using the asymmetric dual-arm dipole antenna(ADDA) structure. The tag is designed to exhibit low performance changes when the tag is attached on a target object(the medical litter receptacle, ${\varepsilon}_r=1.7,\;tan\;{\delta}=0.002$). Detail design parameters for the proposed antenna are optimized to maintain a good readable range in free-space as well as on a target object. The size of the optimized antenna is $100\;mm{\times}50\;mm$. The antenna shows the matching bandwidth($S_{11}$< -10 dB) of 3.7 % and the radiation efficiency of 80 % at the operating frequency. Finally we confirmed the readable range of the tag antenna by measurement and it shows about 5.3 m in free space and 5.5 m on the target object.

  • In this paper, a novel rectangular patch antenna is proposed to have Zeroth Order Resonance(ZOR) generated based on the Metamaterial Complosite Right- and Left-Handed(CRLH) structure. Making the in-phase electric field over the entire antenna other than a half-wavelength as the fundamental resonance mode of a standard microstrip patch or its positive multiple, the metallic patch is suggested to be capacitively coupled with only one surrounding rectangular ring, different from the previous 1D ZOR antennas commonly having several metal cells in line. The performance of the proposed antenna is simulated by a 3D field solver that inputs the sizes of the physical structure corresponding to the equivalent circuit designed to have ZOR at 2.4 GHz. Consequently, the resonance frequency, the gain and the antenna efficiency are observed 2.4 GHz, 5 dB and 98%, respectively. Besides, the important property of the proposed antenna is addressed as the combination of the low profile as an advantage of microstrip patch antennas, and the omni-directional field pattern typical of monopole antennas.

  • A CRLH-TL based compact metamaterial antenna on a magneto-dielectric material is proposed. The proposed antenna is composed of two patches and vias, which is loaded by a magneto-dielectric material constructed by SRRs. The characteristic of SRRs is studied, and the size reduction of the antenna by using the magneto-dielectric material is confirmed. The simulated resonant frequency of the antenna has showed a decrease of 7.13 % at - 1st-order resonant mode, and 23.9 % at zeroth-order resonant mode. A zeroth-order resonant antenna is fabricated and measured, which has a resonant frequency of 1.888 GHz, a bandwidth of 0.48 %, a gain of 0.534 dBi, and an efficiency of 51.7 %.

  • In this paper, we proposed vertically structured radiator for increasing bandwidth and gain of mobile phone internal antenna. The proposed antenna has vertically structured radiator instead of planar structured radiator to improve the antenna characteristics for GSM850/900 and DCS1800/PCS1900 bands. The antenna improve bandwidth of low band with 28 % than planar structured radiator. and also, improve bandwidth of high band with 14 %, efficiency 31.80~86.36 %, average gain -4.956~-0.617 dBi on the GSM850/900 and DCS1800/PCS1900 bands. These results are good performance among the small antenna with vertically structured radiator for increasing bandwidth and gain.
