Radial variation of crystalline state in a stem of Chamaecyparis obtusa E. was examined by x-ray diffraction analyses. Relative crystallinity and degree of crystallite orientation showed significant differences between juvenile and adult wood. That is, Relative crystallinity increased with increasing the age from pith to about 20th annual ring, after which it reached a more or less constant value. On the other hand, degree of crystallite orientation decreased outward from pith to about 10 years and presented almost a constant value thereafter. Crystal width by Scherrer's equation did not show any significant differences between juvenile and adult wood. Therefore, it was considered that crystallinity index and degree of crystallite orientation by x-ray diffraction method could be used for evaluating wood quality.
In this study, we investigated the relationship of tree-ring growth with total nitrogen content, and stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes from the core samples of Pinus koraiensis (35-year-old). Annual ring width showed significant positive correlations with the ${\delta}^{13}C$ (P=0.003). The total nitrogen content (P=0.024), and the ${\delta}^{13}C$ content was also correlated with total nitrogen content (P=0.038), indicating that the growth of P. koraiensis was stimulated as the contents of both ${\delta}^{13}C$ and total nitrogen were increased. On the other hand, the less the ${\delta}^{15}N$ content and the C/N ratio were, the larger the annual ring width was. Moreover the families with relatively better growth performance contained the higher levels of ${\delta}^{13}C$ in the xylem compared to other families. These results suggest that the ${\delta}^{13}C$ and total nitrogen contents are the important determinants in the growth performance of P. koraiensis.
Here we aimed to date the year and season of the resin collection from Korean red pines at Worak mountain and investigate the natural healing ability of the wounds using the tree-ring analysis technique. We determined the dating of the resin collection based on the synchronization between the ring-width time series from the wound surface of the experimental trees and the local master chronology, which is the mean time series from the sound surface on the opposite side of the wounds. For the dating of resin collection, we selected thirteen Korean red pines with resin wounds. For the investigation on the annual healing ability of the wounds, we sampled three dead trees out of 13 trees as disks. Through the comparison of the individual ring-width time series from the wounds with the local master chronology, it was verified that the resin collection was undertaken between the spring of 1962 and the autumn of 1975. The mean healing length of the wounds was 15.8 cm over the preceding 42 years, making their annual mean healing 0.38 cm. Through our study we successfully verified the healing ability of the wounded Korean red pines for the resin collection as well as the undocumented resin collection history.
The current study aimed to investigate the impact of CO2 enrichment on the width of annual tree rings, earlywood and latewood, and the area of annual growth of Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc. grown in open-top chamber (OTC). To this end, two CO2 enrichment cases were considered, namely 1.4 × increment (560 ppm in OTC-II) and 1.8 × (720 ppm in OTC-III) were compared with the current atmosphere (400 ppm in OTC-I). The CO2 enrichment conditions for a period of 12 years (2010-2021) were considered, and all measurements were done through image analysis. The study showed that the increment in CO2 concentrations positively affected the tree growth. The measurement data from the trees in OTC-III were considerably higher than those from OTC-I, whereas those from OTC-II were slightly higher than those from OTC-I. Decreasing patterns of the measured widths and area in 6-7 years after the beginning of CO2 enrichment was found for all the OTCs. These patterns were possibly due to changes in the physiological features, such as aging. The findings of the present study can have potential uses as fundamental data for forest management considering CO2 concentrations.

The climate of the Uisong Area is wet in the heat of summer and cold and dry in winter, The climate is highly consistent. The typical forest soil of the Uisong Area has an acidity of pH 4.5-5.6. The thickness of soil A layers is thin to an average of 10-20 cm and is a typical brown forest soil type. The growth characteristic of this climate and soil environment is as follows. In the case of Larix leptolepis, it takes 5-9 years to reach 6 cm diameter, The annual growth rate falls off greatly at an age of 17-19 years. The change of annual rings is more apparent on the north slopes compared with the east and northeast slopes. Pinus rigida takes 7-9 years to reach a 6 cm diameter. Annual growth rates of Pinus rigida fall greatly when age reaches 19 years. The change of annual ring growth of Pinus rigida was most apparent in the west and northeast slopes compared with the south and east slopes. In the case of Pinus koraiensis, the change of the annual ring width according to the characteristics of the slope is not important. Pinus koraiensis takes 6 yearsto reach the 6cm diameter, and annual growth rate fell off at age 19 years. In the case of Quercus acutissima, the growth of the valley trees is more stable than for trees grown at the mountain base. Annual growth rate of Quercus autissima fell off 19 years after planting. Ring growth of Robinia pseudo-acasia on northeast slopes appears much like that on northwest slopes. In conclusion, the main silviculture species reaches a 6 cm diameter in 5-9 years of growth, and the annual growth rate begins to fall between years 13 and 19 in the Uisong Area.
The relationship between shell length and ring radius in each ring group was expressed as a regression line. Therefore, there is a correspondence in each ring formation. Based on the monthly variation of the marginal index (Ml') of the shell, it is assumed that the ring of this species was formed once a year during the period of August to October, and the main period of the annual ring formation was August through September. The relationship between shell length (SL) and total weight (TW) was expressed by the equation TW = 2.2476 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ SL$^{3.536}$ ($r^2$= 0.90). Shell length (SL) and shell height (SH; mm) were highly correlated with the equation SH = 0.7545 SL - 0.0145 ($r^2$= 0.93). The shell length (SL)-shell width (SW) relation was expressed by the equation SW = 0.5336 SL- 2.4253 ($r^2$= 0.87). Growth curves for shell length and total weight fitted to the von Bertalanffy's equation were expressed as follows: SL$_{t}$ =60.02[1 - e$^{-0.6458(t-0.3895)}$ ], Twt = 43.63[1 - e$^{0.6458(t-0.3895)}$ ]$^{3.536}$ .
For the purpose of Improving the sounding boards for the conventional GAYAKUM, I was making approximately 202 specimens of radial board, 371 specimens of tangential board by cutting along the grain and the part of stem and 31 specimens of the disjointed traditional GAYAKUM made in Paulownia coreana. And it was conducted to measure specific gravity, dynamic Young's modulus, internal friction, resonant frequency, velosity of sound and width of annual ring by the method of the frexural vibration in a free-free bar in the audio frequency range. And it confirmed the juvenile wood by measuring wood fiber length of specimens. It was also conducted to investigate dynamic properties and moisture absorption by various heat-treatment and to test dynamic Young's modulus and internal friction for the disjointed conventional GAYAKUM. The results obtained were summarized as follow: 1. The Juvenile wood is located within about 7 annual rings from the pith in Paulownia coreana. 2. As increased with the specific gravity, the dynamic Young's modulus had more and more increased, but the internal friction had slightly decreased. 3. I think that radial board would be good for sounding board wood. because radial board is higher than tangential board in dynamic Young's mudulus and internal friction is lower than tangential board. 4. The value of mean dynamic Young's modulus on the conventional GAYAKUM, radial board and tangential board of 604 samples is $0.4283\pm0.037(\times10^{11}dyne/cm^2)$, $0.4316\pm(\times10^{11}dyne/cm^2)$ and $0.4234\pm0.112(\times10^{11}dyne/cm^2)$ respectively. The value of the radial board showed little higher than that of conventional GAYAKUM, but It had a similar tendency between conventional GAYAKUM and tangential board. 5. The annual ring width by four aspect is more narrow in north and west than that of others. 6. The values of specific gravity and dynamic Young's modulus in the mature wood showed higher than those of juvenile wood. 7. As the grain angle in the butt wood more increased to bark from pith, the dynamic Young's modulus were low. Then it was not good for sounding board. 8. It appeared that the heat-treatment for sounding board wood had a more effect to do the treatment of hotiron on surface after heat-treatment during 24 hours in $60^{\circ}C$ temperature. 9. As increased with the temperature, the rate of moisture absorption of heat-treatment wood had decreased. In conclusion, I thought that the sounding board wood for GAYAKUM would had the most effect to do the treatment of hotiron on surface after heat-treatment during 24 hours in $60^{\circ}C$ temperature using the radial board of mature wood.
This study aimed at more precisely estimating the age of big old trees using dendrochronological method. Gesan-gun in Chungbuk (CBGS), Gurye-gun in Jeonnam (JNGR) and Uljin-gun in Gyeongbuk (GBUJ) were study areas and Zelkova serrata (ZS) and Pinus densiflora (PD) selected as protected trees therein were used as experimental tree species. The increment cores were extracted from 12, 8, and 6 ZSs and 10, 3, and 9 PDs in CBGS, JNGR, and GBUJ, respectively, using an increment borer (${\phi}5.2mm$). In order to clearly distinguish tree-ring boundary, the surface in the transverse section was cut for ZS using a sliding microtome and sanded for PD using a sand paper. Ring widths were measured in the resolution of 0.01 mm. Based on the measurement values, 203-year long (1813-2015) ZS local master tree-ring chronologies were successfully established and 175-year long (1841-2015) ZS local master tree-ring chronology for JNGR was also successfully established. In the case of PD, 154-, 175-, and 250-year long local master tree-ring chronologies for CBGS, JNGR, and GBUJ were successfully established, respectively. In the comparisons between local master tree-ring chronologies, they showed low t-values and Glks. According to the comparisons of the local master tree-ring chronologies with 50-year (1950~2000) average temperature and precipitation distribution maps, the annual variations of local master tree-ring chronologies seem to be determined by not temperature but precipitation. For such cross-dating therefore more local master tree-ring chronologies have to be established at the least based on the distribution map for precipitation.

This study was fulfilled to verify the durations of cambial activity and analyze the associations of degree days and precipitation with the initiation of cambial activity and intra-annual wood formation for Pinus koraiensis and Chamaecyparis pisifera planted at Mt. Worak, respectively, by monitoring of their intra-annual cambial activities. And more, the reason was also analyzed why the DBH of Chamaecyparis pisifera known as planted in the same year could be classified as two groups (CPL: ${\phi}30cm$, CPS: ${\phi}15cm$). The intra-annual cambial activity was monitored using mini-cores (${\phi}2mm$) and they were collected in 2-week interval between April and October. However, between April and May and between middle September and October expected as the initiation and cessation of the cambial activity, respectively, it was fulfilled in 1-week interval. The average number of tree rings for PK (30) was less than CPS (37) and CPL (38), whereas the average ring width of PK (4.12 mm) was wider than CPS (1.84 mm) and CPL (3.97 mm). In the comparison of ring widths between CPL and CPS, CPL was 2.13 mm wider than CPS, however, excepting CPS 1 (0.83 mm), the average ring widths of CPS 2 (2.42 mm) and CPS 3 (2.73 mm) in the last 3 years were close to the average of CPL (2.71 mm). The initiation of cambial activity for PK was between 1 and 21 April, which was 1 week earlier than CPL and CPS (excepting CPS 1) and the cessation was between 1 and 22 September. The longest growing season therefore was 157.3 days (${\pm}3.3$) and it was longer than CPL ($145.7{\pm}6.6days$) and CPS ($148.0{\pm}15.1days$). In CP groups there were wide variations for the cessation of cambial activity and also there were the meaningful linear relationship between the growing seasons and the ring widths (r = 0.69, p < 0.064). The cambial activity in PK was initiated when degree days were between 99 and 134 and in CPS (excepting PCS 1) and CPL between 134 and 200. Excepting CPS 3, the false ring was observed in all samples collected on 21 July when drought stress was high due to low precipitation from June to the beginning of July.
This study was carried out to investigate on the variation of wood fiber dimensions of some oakwoods. Every 2 annual ring was selected for specimens from pith toward bark up to 28th annual ring on 3 species of Oak SINGALNAMOO(Quercus mongorica Fisch.), JOLCHAMNAMOO(Quercus serrata Thunb.) and KULCHAMNAMOO(Quercus variabilis Blume) which grew in Mt. Jiri. The investgated results are as follows: 1. Values of wood fiber lengths increase rapidly up to 16th annual ring, however, considerably stable at the rear part. Range of wood fiber length variations: Species Range of length(mean) CV SINGALNAMOO, $640{\sim}1,544{\mu}$($1,142.3{\mu}$), 8~16% JOLCHAMNAMOO, $592{\sim}1,600{\mu}$($1,179.6{\mu}$), 6~21% KULCHAMNAMOO, $679{\sim}1,592{\mu}$($1,298.9{\mu}$), 2~15% 2. The increment of wood fiber width and thickness by annual rings shows quite inactive contrary to the length. Range of wood fiber width: $7.6{\sim}10.0{\mu}$(mean $9.3{\mu}$) Range of wood fiber thickness: $2.0{\sim}3.2{\mu}$(mean $2.6{\mu}$) 3. There was no significance between species through their wood fiber lengths. 4. And these wood fibers believed to be valuable for pulp-wood through their fiber bonding ratio, Runkel ratio and flexibility coefficient.
