  • In 60 years when the double $CO_2$concentration is anticipated the average annual rainfall depth is expected to be increased by 5 10% due to global warming. However, in the water resources area the frequency change of meteorological extremes such as droughts and floods attracts more interests than the increase of annual rainfall amount. Even though recent frequent occurrences of this kind of meteorological extremes are assumed as an indirect proof of global warming, the prediction of its overall tendency has not yet been made. Thus, in this research we propose a possible methodology to be used for its prediction. The methodology proposed is based on the frequency distribution of daily rainfall be Todorovie and Woolhiser(1975), and Katz(1977), where the input parameters are modified to consider the change of monthly or annual rainfall depth and, thus, to result in the change of frequency distribution. We adopt two values(10mm, 50mm) as thresholds and investigate the change of occurrence probability due to the change monthly and annual rainfall depth. these changes do not directly indicate the changes of occurrence probability of floods and droughts, but it may still be a very useful information for their prediction. Finally, the changes of occurrence probability were found to be greater when considering the monthly rainfall rather than the annual rainfall, and those in rainy season than those in dry season.

  • On account of the increase in water demand and climate change, droughts are in great concern for water resources planning and management. In this study, rainfall characteristics with stationary and non-stationary perspectives were analyzed using Weibull distribution model with 40-year records of annual minimum rainfall depth collected in major cities of Korea. As a result, the non-stationary minimum probable rainfall was expected to decrease, compared with the stationary probable rainfall. The reliability of ${\xi}_1$, a variable reflecting the decrease of the minimum rainfall depth due to climate change, in Wonju, Daegu, and Busan was over 90%, indicating the probability that the minimal rainfall depths in those city decrease is high.

  • Global warming has begun since the industrial revolution and it is getting worse recently. Even though the increase of greenhouse gases such as $CO_2$ is thought to be the main cause for global warming, its impact on global climate has not been revealed clearly in rather quantitative manners. However, researches using General Circulation Models(GCMs) has shown the accumulation of greenhouse gases increases the global mean temperature, which in turn impacts on the global water circulation pattern. This changes in global water circulation pattern result in abnormal and more frequent meteorological events such as severe floods and droughts, generally more severe than the normal ones, which are now common around the world and is referred as a indirect proof of global warming. Korean peninsula also cannot be an exception and have had several extremes recently. The main objective of this research is to analyze the impact of global warming on the change of flood and drought frequency. Based on the assumption that now is a point in a continuously changing climate due to global warming, we analyzed the observed daily rainfall data to find out how the increase of annual rainfall amount affects the distribution of daily rainfall. Obviously, the more the annual rainfall depth, the more frequency of much daily rainfall, and vice versa. However, the analysis of the 17 points data of Keum river basin in Korea shows that especially the number of days of under 10mm or over 50mm daily rainfall depth is highly correlated with the amount of annual rainfall depth, not the number of dry days with their correlation coefficients quite high around 0.8 to 0.9.

  • Mainly, observed maximum rainfall has been evaluated by point rainfall, but actually it should be considered by means of average areal rainfall. Average areal rainfall is an estimated value computed through DAD(rainfall Depth-Area-Duration) analysis. By using this value, an average and maximum areal rainfall according to area-duration relationship could be computed. In this study, we assume that the whole Korea region is hydrologically homogeneous, and then analyze using the storm-centered DAD(moving-area DAD) method for the past century data. From this analysis, we evaluate the yearly variation of observed maximum areal rainfall through area-duration relationship. And we also construct an IDF(rainfall Intensity-Duration-Frequency) curve by using the annual time series data which is composed of maximum areal rainfall. The characteristics of IDF and observed maximum areal rainfall is also evaluated.

  • Purpose: Retention and infiltration of small and frequently-occurring rainfall by LID facilities account for a large proportion of the annual precipitation volume. Based on 4 standard facilities such as Porous Pavement, Infiltration Trench, Cylindrical Infiltration Well, Rectangular Infiltration Well by Seoul Metropolitan Handbook of the Prior Consultation for LID. The total retention volume of each facility was calculated according to the type and size. The Purpose of this study is to find out the quantitative relationship between Percentile Rainfall Event and Design Volume of Infiltration Facilities. Methode: For the estimation of Percentile Rainfall Event, Daily Precipitation of Seoul from 2005 to 2014 was sorted ascending and the distribution of percentile was estimated by PERCENTILE spreadsheet function. The managed Rainfall Depth and Percentile of each facility was calculated at the several sizes. In response to the rainwater charge volume of 5.5mm/hr by the Category "Private large site", the 3 types of facilities were planned for example. The calculated Rainfall Depth and Percentile were 54.4mm and 90% by the use of developed Calculation-Module based on the Spreadsheet program. Result: With this Module the existing Designed Infiltration volume which was introduced from Japan was simply converted to the Percentile-Rainfall-Event used in USA.

  • In order to determine the design precipitation, the most probable daily precipitation and annual precipitation at every spot are calculated and iso - precipitation line are drawn. Probability of precipitation and drought phenomena of each gage station are analyzied by the method of frequency analysis from the statistical conceptions. The results summarized in this study are as the follows. 1. Annual mean precipitation in kyungpook area are 1044 mm, about 115 mm less than annual mean precipitation of Korea amounts to l1S9mm, and found to regionally unequal. 2. Monthly mean rainfall of July is 242.2mm, 23.2%, August 174.2mm, 16.7%, June 115mm, 11% and September 114.2mm, 10.9% and Rainfall depth of July-August are more than 40% of annual precipition. This shows notable summer rainy weather by typoon and low pressure storm and seasonal unbalance of water supply. 3. The relation among the maximum precipi.tation per day, per two continuous days and per three contnous days are caculated and the latter is found 31.0% increased rate of the first and the last 48.2% increased rate of first. 4. Probability precipitation in Kyungpook area are shown as 9.0%(5 year), 13.3%(10 year), 17.7%(20 year), 23.1%(50 year), 27.0%(100 year) and 31.1%(200 year) increased rate of each recurrence year compared with observed average annual precipitation. 5. From annual precipitation and maximum daily rainfall data probability of precipitation and precipitation isohyetal line are derived which shown as Table 11 and Fig. 8. 6. Drought days are divided 6 class and analysed results are shown on table 12. Average occurrence time of 10-14 continuous drought days are 2.3 time per year, 15-19 days are 0.9 time per year, 20-24 days are one per six years, 30-34 days are once per nine years and over than 35days are once per 25 years.

  • This paper is to derive the probable rainfall depths and the probable rainfall intensity formulas for Inchon Metropolitan district. The annual maximum rainfall data from 10 min. to 6 hours have been collected from the Inchon weather station. Eleven types of probability distribution are considered to estimate probable rainfall depths for 12 different storm durations at the Inchon Metropolitan district. Three tests including Chi-square, Kolmogorov-Smimov and Cramer Von Mises with the graphical analysis are adopted to select the best probability distribution. The probable rainfall intensity formulas are then determined by the least squares method using the trial and error approach. Five types of Talbot type, Sherman type, Japanese type, Unified type I, and Unified type II are considered to determine the best type for the Inchon rainfall intensity. The root mean squared errors are computed to compare the accuracy from the derived formulas. It has been suggested that the probable rainfall intensities having Unified type I for the short term duration should be the most reliable formulas by considering the root mean squared errors and the difference between computed probable rainfall depth and estimated probable rainfall depth.

  • The estimation of the rainfall quantile is of great importance in designing hydrologic structures. Conventionally, the rainfall quantile is estimated by univariate frequency analysis with an appropriate probability distribution. There is a limitation in which duration of rainfall is restrictive. To overcome this limitation, bivariate frequency analysis by using 3 copula models is performed in this study. Annual maximum rainfall events in 5 stations are used for frequency analysis and rainfall depth and duration are used as random variables. Gumbel (GUM), generalized logistic (GLO) distributions are applied for rainfall depth and generalized extreme value (GEV), GUM, GLO distributions are applied for rainfall duration. Copula models used in this study are Frank, Joe, and Gumbel-Hougaard models. Maximum pseudo-likelihood estimation method is used to estimate the parameter of copula, and the method of probability weighted moments is used to estimate the parameters of marginal distributions. Rainfall quantile from this procedure is compared with various marginal distributions and copula models. As a result, in change of marginal distribution, distribution of duration does not significantly affect on rainfall quantile. There are slight differences depending on the distribution of rainfall depth. In the case which the marginal distribution of rainfall depth is GUM, there is more significantly increasing along the return period than GLO. Comparing with rainfall quantiles from each copula model, Joe and Gumbel-Hougaard models show similar trend while Frank model shows rapidly increasing trend with increment of return period.

  • This Study is developed in order to determine the probability of a raintall depth of short duration in Seoul as considering the profect life and the factor of safety of hydraulic structures. The raw annual maximum rainfall data are selected from 1915 to 1974 about short duration (10min-120min.) in Seoul. The selected data are treated by frequency analysis, and the hypothesis that the distribution fuction of the raw data is normal Distribution is performed by chi-square test that signifcance level has 5%. With the parameters (mean and standard deviation) of the accepted distribution function, the probabilitn of a rainfall depth can be easily determined on the graph which is made on this paper.

  • This study aims to rout optimized design flood discharge through prediction of the frequency-based precipitation from the frequency analysis with density of rainfall gage networks in urban watershed. Frequency analysis was examined for the measured rainfall depth with low density of a point and high density of the sub-basin divided into 13 points in watershed. The used rainfall data in order to analyze consists of two groups based on measured rainfall depth for a day duration with 39years of a point and 6years of 13 points by an extending as annual exceedance series, respectively. Selected rainfall data in this analysis show that low-network has maximum rainfall depth with duration 1hr-79.1mm and 24hrs-329.1mm, and high-networks have ones with duration of 1hr-93.0 mm and 24 hrs-245.0 mm, respectively. As the result, probability of the best in this study determined the Gumbel method from the goodness of fit test and the method of prime 6 probability distributions.
