  • A diffuser an important equipment to change kinetic energy into pressure energy has been studied for a long time. Though experimental and theoretical researches habe been done the understanding of energy transfer and detailed mechanism of energy dissipation is unclear. As far as numerical prediction of diffuser flows are concerned various numerical studies have also been done. On the contrary many turbulence models have constraint to the applicability of diffuser-like flows with expansion and streamline curvature. In order to obtain the reliability of k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model modified combination turbulence models composed of the anisotropic k-$\varepsilon$model modified combination turbulence models composed of the anisotropic k-$\varepsilon$ model with Hanjalic-Launder's preferential normal strain and Pope's vortex stretching mechanism are proposed. The results of the present proposed models prove the fact that the coefficient of pressure and the shear stress are well predicted at the diffuser flow.

  • Light wave diffraction from multiple superposed volume gratings is inestigated using a perturbative iteration method of the integral equation of Maxwell's wave equation. The host material and index gratings are anisotropic and non-coplanar multiple volume gratings are considered. In this method, the paraxial approximation and lack of backward scattering in conventional coupled mode theory are not assumed. Systematic analysis of anisotropic wave diffraction due to multiple noncoplanar volume index gratings is performed in increasing level of diffraction orders corresponding to successive iterations.

  • The initial flow characteristics of the turbulent circular jet discharging into the sudden expansion pipes have been investigated by the hot wire anemometry. Evolutions of similarity, centerline behavior, jet boundary and typical turbulent quantities were looked into for the expansion ratios. The results show that the spreading rates of discharging jet seem not to be dependent of the expansion ratio and that the velocity profiles in the radial directions exhibit the similarity in the regions, 2-5d, 2-6d and 3-8d for the corresponding expansion rations of 2, 3 and 5, respectively. With the increase of expansion ratio the centerline velocity decays rather slowly. The anisotropic behaviors of the discharging jets into the sudden expansion pipe look stronger than those of the free jet.

  • In this study, we incorporate an anisotropic scattering scheme involving spherical harmonics into the method of characteristics (MOC). The neutron transport solution in a light water reactor can be significantly improved because of the impact of an anisotropic scattering source with the MOC flat source approximation. Several problems are selected to verify the proposed scheme and investigate its effects and accuracy. The MOC anisotropic scattering source is based on the expansion of spherical harmonics with Legendre polynomial functions. The angular flux, scattering source, and cross section are expanded in terms of the surface spherical harmonics. Later, the polynomial is expanded to achieve the odd and even parity of the source components. Ultimately, the MOC angular and scalar fluxes are calculated from a combination of two sources. This paper presents various numerical examples that represent the hot and cold conditions of a reactor core with boron concentration, burnable absorbers, and control rod materials, with and without a reflector or baffle. Moreover, a small critical core problem is considered which involves significant neutron leakage at room temperature. We demonstrate that an anisotropic scattering source significantly improves solution accuracy for the small core high-leakage problem, as well as for practical large core analyses.

  • In this work, a new way of measuring the volume fraction of e martensite in Fe-based alloys has been proposed. Since the specific volume of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, depending on alloy composition, is smaller than that of austenite i.e ${\gamma}$ phase, volume expansion takes place during ${\varepsilon}{\rightarrow}{\gamma}$ reverse transformation. As the amount of the volume expansion is proportional to the product of specific volume difference times the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite can be calculated by measuring the volume expansion and the specific volume difference. Such a relationship was confirmed in Fe-21Mn and Fe-32Mn-6Si alloys which undergo ${\gamma}{\rightarrow}{\varepsilon}$ martensitic transformation on cooling and by cold rolling, respectively. It was also found that the former has isotropic ${\varepsilon}$ martensite while the latter has anisotropic ${\varepsilon}$ martensite.

  • The energy release rate for an interface crack in anisotropic dissimilar materials was obtained by the eigenfunction expansion method and also was analyzed numerically by the reciprocal work contour integral method. It was shown that the results for orthotropic dissimilar materials are consistent with the other worker's results.

  • Plastics are widely used in mechanical and other fields due to their light weight, design flexibility, and molding processability. In processing plastics, defective products are mixed and reprocessed to improve production efficiency and reduce costs. In this study, an experiment was conducted to confirm the coefficient of thermal expansion of HDPE during this reprocessing. The coefficient of thermal expansion was measured at different measurement directions and heating rates. As a result, we observed that the coefficient of thermal expansion in the direction perpendicular to the injection direction is greater than that in the horizontal direction.

  • In this study, simulation method was developed to improve the accuracy of the warpage simulation based on the equivalent anisotropic viscoelastic model. First, a package with copper traces and bumps was modeled to implement anisotropic viscoelastic behavior. Then, equivalent anisotropic viscoelastic properties and thermal expansion coefficient for the bump region were derived through the representative volume element model. A thermal cycle of 0 to 125 degrees was applied to the package based on the derived mechanical properties, and the warpage according to the thermal cycle was simulated. To verify the simulation results, the actual package was manufactured, and the warpage with respect to the thermal cycle was measured through shadow moiré interferometer. As a result, by applying the equivalent anisotropic viscoelastic model, it was possible to calculate the warpage of the package within 5 ㎛ error and predict the shape of the warpage.

  • In this paper, the Chip-On-Flex (COF) assembly process using anisotropic conductive films (ACFs) was investigated and the reliability of COF assemblies using ACFs was evaluated. Thermo-mechanical properties of ACFs such as coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), storage modulus (E'), and glass transition temperature $(T_g)$ were measured to investigate the effects of ACF material properties on the reliability of COF assemblies using ACFs. In addition, the bonding conditions for COF assemblies using ACFs such as time, temperature, and pressure were optimized. After the COF assemblies using ACFs were fabricated with optimized bonding conditions, reliability tests were then carried out. According to the reliability test results, COF assemblies using the ACF which had lower CTE and higher $T_g$ showed better thermal cycling reliability. Consequently, thermo-mechanical properties of ACFs, especially $T_g$, should be improved for high thermal cycling reliability of COF assemblies using ACFs for compact camera module (CCM) applications.

  • Recently, the size of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) carriers has been increasing, in turn increasing the load generated during operation. To handle this load, the thickness of LNG Cargo Containment Systems (CCSs) should be increased. Despite increasing the thickness of LNG CCSs, a secondary barrier is still used in conventional thickness. Therefore, the mechanical performance of the existing secondary barrier should be verified. In this study, tensile test of the secondary barrier was performed to evaluate mechanical properties under several low- and cryogenic-temperature conditions considering LNG environment, and in each fiber direction considering that the secondary barrier is composed of anisotropic composite materials depending on the glass fibers. Additionally, the coefficient of thermal expansion was measured by considering the degradation of the mechanical properties of the secondary barrier caused by the generated thermal stress during periodical unloading. As a result, the mechanical performance of secondary barrier in the Machine Direction (MD) was generally found to be superior than that in the Transverse Direction (TD) owing to the warp interlock structure of the glass fibers.
