Accurate electroencephalography (EEG) forward calculation is of importance for the accurate estimation of neuronal electrical sources. Conventional studies concerning the EEG forward problems have investigated various factors influencing the forward solution accuracy, e.g. tissue conductivity values in head compartments, anisotropic conductivity distribution of a head model, tessellation patterns of boundary element models, the number of elements used for boundary/finite element method (BEM/FEM), and so on. In the present paper, we investigated the influence of modeling errors in the boundary element volume conductor models upon the accuracy of the EEG forward solutions. From our simulation results, we could confirm that accurate construction of boundary element models is one of the key factors in obtaining accurate EEG forward solutions from BEM. Among three boundaries (scalp, outer skull, and inner skull boundary), the solution errors originated from the modeling error in the scalp boundary were most significant. We found that the nonuniform error distribution on the scalp surface is closely related to the electrode configuration and the error distributions on the outer and inner skull boundaries have statistically meaningful similarity to the curvature distributions of the boundary surfaces. Our simulation results also demonstrated that the accumulation of small modeling errors could lead to considerable errors in the EEG source localization. It is expected that our finding can be a useful reference in generating boundary element head models.
Elastic constants were measured for 70 samples of transversely isotropic banded gneiss from the Onyang region. Anisotropic angles of samples are $0^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$. Exact values of $E_2$ and ${\nu}_{21}$ can be measured from samples with anisotropic angles of $0^{\circ}$ and those of $E_1$ and ${\nu}_{12}$ from samples with anisotropic angles of $90^{\circ}$. These values are set as reference values. Elastic constants measured from samples with anisotropic angles of $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, and $75^{\circ}$, using the methods proposed by Jang et al. (2001) and Park et al. (2008), are compared with the reference values to examine the effectiveness of the two methods. $E_1$ were measured correctly from samples with anisotropic angles of $60^{\circ}$ and $75^{\circ}$, and $E_2$ from samples with anisotropic angles of $15^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, when using the method suggested by Jang et al. (2001). $E_1$ were measured correctly from samples with anisotropic angles of $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$, and $E_2$ from samples with anisotropic angles of $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, and $60^{\circ}$, when using the method proposed by Park et al. (2008). The effectiveness of the two methods was determined by error rates between exact values and measured values. The effectiveness of the two methods was similar. However, the method suggested by Jang et al. (2001) may be more effective in measuring $E_1$, while the method suggested by Park et al. (2008) may be more effective in measuring $E_2$.
A method is proposed to estimate aquifer parameters in a heterogeneous and anisotropic aquifer under steady-state groundwater flow conditions on the basis of maximum likelihood concept. Zonation method is adopted for parameterization, and estimation errors are analyzed by examining the estimation error covariance matrix in the eigenspace. This study demonstrates the ability of the proposed model to estimate parameters and helps to understand the characteristics of the inverse problem. This study also explores various features of the inverse methodology by applying it to a set of field data of the Taegu area. In the field example, transmissivities were estimated under three different zonation patterns. Recharge rates in the Taegu area were also estimated using MODINV which is an inverse model compatible with MODFLOW.The estimation results indicate that anisotropy of aquifer parameters should be considered for the crystalline rock aquifer which is the dominant aquifer system in Korea.

The 3-D Hall sensor has two horizontal magnetic field sensing parts ($\chi$, y components) and one vertical magnetic field sensing part (z component). For conventional, 3-D Hall sensor it is general that the sensitivity for $B_{z}$ is about 1/10 compared with those for $B_\chi$ or $B_y$. Therefore, in this work, we proposed 3-D Hall sensor with new structure. We have increased the sensitivity about 6 times to form the trench using anisotropic etching. And we have increased the sensitivity for the $B_z$ by 80% compared with those of $B_\chi$ and$B_y$ using deposition of the ferromagnetic thin films on the bottom surface of the wafer to concentrate the magnetic fluxes. When the input current was 3 mA, sensitivities of the fabricated sensor with Ni/Fe film for $B_\chi, B_y$ and $B_{z}$ were measured as 120.1 mV/T, 111.7 mV/T, 95.3 mV/T, respectively. The measured linearity of the sensor was within $\pm$3% of error.
Shale gas formations exhibit strong mechanical and strength anisotropies. Thus, it is necessary to study the effect of anisotropy on the hydraulic fracture initiation pressure. The calculation model for the in-situ stress of the bedding formation is improved according to the effective stress theory. An analytical model of the stresses around wellbore in shale gas reservoirs, in consideration of stratum dip direction, dip angle, and in-situ stress azimuth, has been built. Besides, this work established a calculation model for the stress around the perforation holes. In combination with the tensile failure criterion, a prediction model for the hydraulic fracture initiation pressure in the shale gas reservoirs is put forward. The error between the prediction result and the measured value for the shale gas reservoir in the southern Sichuan Province is only 3.5%. Specifically, effects of factors including elasticity modulus, Poisson's ratio, in-situ stress ratio, tensile strength, perforation angle (the angle between perforation direction and the maximum principal stress) of anisotropic formations on hydraulic fracture initiation pressure have been investigated. The perforation angle has the largest effect on the fracture initiation pressure, followed by the in-situ stress ratio, ratio of tensile strength to pore pressure, and the anisotropy ratio of elasticity moduli as the last. The effect of the anisotropy ratio of the Poisson's ratio on the fracture initiation pressure can be ignored. This study provides a reference for the hydraulic fracturing design in shale gas wells.

In Wireless Sensor Network, the sensor node localization is important issue for information tracking, event detection, routing. Generally, in wireless sensor network localization, the absolute positions of certain anchor nodes are required based on the use of global positioning system, then all the other nodes are approximately localized using various algorithms based on a coordinate system of anchor DV-Hop is a localized, distributed, hop by hop positioning algorithm in wireless sensor network where only a limited fraction of nodes have self positioning capability. However, instead of uniformly distributed network, in anisotropic network with possible holes, DV-Hop's performance is very low. To address this issue, we propose Group based DV-Hop (GDV-Hop) algorithm. Best contribution of GDV-Hop is that it performs localization with reduced error compared with DV-Hop in anisotropic network.
The main objective of this study is to provide an effective algorithm of the transmitted solar radiation calculation through window glazing on a clear day. This algorithm would be used in developing a computer program for fenestration system analysis and shading device design. Various simulation methods have been evaluated to figure out the most accurate and effective procedure in estimation of transmitted solar radiation on a tilted surface on a clear day. Characteristics of simulated results of each step have been scrutinized by comparing them with measured results of the site as well as results from other simulation programs. Generally, the Duffie & Beckman's solar calculation method introducing the HDKR anisotropic model provided the most reliable simulation results. The DOE-2 program usually provided over-estimated simulation results. The estimation of extraterrestrial solar radiation and beam normal radiation were conducted pretty accurately. However, the solar radiation either on horizontal surface or on tilted surface involves complicated factors in estimation. Even though the estimation results were close to the real measured data during summer when solar intensity is getting higher, the estimation provided more error when solar intensities were getting weaker. The convex polygon clipping algorithm with homogeneous coordinates was fastest model in calculation of sunlight to shaded area ratio. It could not be applied because of its shape limitation.

Comprehensive numberical computations have been made for four turbulent swirling jets with and without recirculation to critically evaluate the accuracy and universality of several exising turbulence models as well as of the modified k-.epsilon. model proposed in the present study. A numerical scheme based on the full Navier-Stoke equations ha been developed and used for this purpose. Inlet conditions are given by experiments, whenever possible, to minimize the error due to incorrect initial conditions. The standard k-.epsilon. model performs well for the strongly swirling jets with recirculation while it underpredicts the influence of swirl for weakly swirling jets. Rodi's swirl correction and algebraic stress model do not exhibit universality for the swirling jets. The present modified k-.epsilon. model derived from algebraic stress model accounts for anisotropy and streamline curvature effect on turbulence. This model performs consistently better than others for all cases. It may be because these flows have a strong dependence of stresses on the local strain of the mean flow. The predictions of truculence intensities indicate that this model successfully reflect the curvature effect in swirling jets, i.e. the stabilizing and destabilizing effects of swirl on turbulence transport.
This paper presents a method to evaluate denoising filters based on edge locations in their denoised images. Image quality assessment has often been performed by using structural similarity (SSIM). However, SSIM does not provide clearly the geometric accuracy of features in denoised images. Thus, in this paper, a method to localize edge locations with subpixel accuracy based on adaptive weighting of gradients is used for obtaining the subpixel locations of edges in ground truth image, noisy images, and denoised images. Then, this paper proposes a method to evaluate the geometric accuracy of edge locations based on root mean squares error (RMSE) and jaggedness with reference to ground truth locations. Jaggedness is a measure proposed in this study to measure the stability of the distribution of edge locations. Tested denoising filters are anisotropic diffusion (AF), bilateral filter, guided filter, weighted guided filter, weighted mean of patches filter, and smoothing filter (SF). SF is a simple filter that smooths images by applying a Gaussian blurring to a noisy image. Experiments were performed with a set of simulated images and natural images. The experimental results show that AF and SF recovered edge locations more accurately than the other tested filters in terms of SSIM, RMSE, and jaggedness and that SF produced better results than AF in terms of jaggedness.
Velocities of leaky surface acoustic waves (LSAW/sub s/) were measured by using a line-focus polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) transducer and compared with theoretically calculated ones. Isotropic materials of Cu, Al, fused quartz, and anisotropic one of Z-cut α-quartz crystal were used as specimens. The velocities were obtained by the separation time between wave components reflected directly from the surface of specimen and LSAW components according to the defocusing distance. The measured velocities well agree with the theoretical results within 1% error, and it was shown that the leaky pseudo-surface acoustic wave (LPSAW) as well as the LSAW propagates with the typical 6-fold anisotropy on the (0,0,1) surface of α-quartz.
