For this study, we polymerized polyacrylamide base flocculants (PAA) and tested their properties and settling efficiency as a treatment for potable water. The most common chemicals for potable water treatment in Korea are alum or PAC. However, due to various reasons (such as rainy season or algae), inorganic flocculants cannot be solely depended on to solve all the problems caused by the poor quality of inflow water. When PAA coupled with coagulants in a potable water purification process is used, the turbidity removal efficiency increases by a factor of three on a single chemical system using PAC (Raw water: 5.21 NTU; Treated PAA+PAC: 0.34 NTU; and, Treated PAC: 1.04 NTU). It is possible to offset the toxic effect of residual monomers in treated water using PAA, because the concentrations of residual acrylamide are less than 400 mg/L in the polymer itself and less than $0.04\;{\mu}g/L$ in the treated water base at a dosage of 0.1 mg/L. Therefore, PAAs may be a workable, and dependable, potable water treatment process for the high pollutant level of resource water.
Since polyelectrolytes have been used as conditioners, conventionally only a single polyelectrolyte has been added for sludge conditioning. However, the amount of polyelectrolyte needed for optimal conditioning of sludge is very critical. Overdosing reduces the sludge dewaterbility. In this experimental study, sludge conditioning with single or dual polyelectrolyte was conducted to avoid problems associated with overdosing. Single polyelectrolyte conditioning was conducted by one of cationic, nonionic, and anionic polyelectrolytes. The dual polyelectrolyte conditioning was performed by adding one polyelectrolyte and another one in sequence. The dewaterbility of sludges were measured by SRF(specific resistance to filtration), TTF(time to filter), CST(capillary suction time) respectively. Additionally, parameters such as turbidity, zeta potential, viscosity of conditioned sludges or supematant were measured to evaluate the changed characteristics of sludge by addition of polyelectrolytes. From the experiment results, it was concluded that single polyelectrolyte conditioning had a high probability of overdosing, whereas dual polyelectrolyte conditioning resulted in a better dewaterbility and less chance of overdosing. But, it was also found that dosing sequence in dual conditioning was very important according to the characteristics of sludge. Parameters such as viscosity, turbidity, zeta potential were found to be useful as a means of evaluating sludge dewaterbility.

In order to suggest the methodology for improving the equity of flow distribution in open channel with multiple outlet, CFD simulations were carried out for actual scale distribution channel being operated in domestic G_WTP(Water Treatment Plant). Also, before and after installing the longitudinal multi hole(diameter=250 mm, 116 holes) baffle suggested by this research, turbidity measurements data were collected for evaluating the effects of hydraulic modification for inlet flow equity. From the both results, total turbidity of settled water was lowered by 30 % and equity of flow distribution was improved about 60 % compared with before hydraulic structure modification.
As the concentration of ammonium nitrogen could be reached 2~3 mg/L in the winter in the river. It was clear that the excessive concentration of chlorinated organics could be produced with the increase of chlorine addition to remove ammonium nitrogen. In the innovative ammonium nitrogen removal process, zeolite adsorption is very efficient as substitute for rapid sand filtration without other adverse quality change in the water. This study is conducted to evaluate the feasibility of ammonium nitrogen removal and regeneration by zeolite adsorption in drinking water treatment. Also, the reuse possibility of zeolite is evaluated to change the removal efficiency of ammonium nitrogen through several times of regeneration. The ammonium nitrogen was not removed in sand filter, but it was almost removed in zeolite filter during 7 days. The sand and zeolite filters have a similar result of turbidity removal. Therefore, zeolite filtration was confirmed the removal of turbidity and ammonium nitrogen as a media. When compared KCl with NaCl as a chemical for zeolite regeneration, it is demonstrated that KCl was more efficient than NaCl in the ability of zeolite regeneration. The adsorption rate of ammonium nitrogen was almost not decreased in the results of several times of regeneration. It is indicated that both zeolite and regeneration solution were possible to reuse without variation of regeneration rate through this study.
This experiment was carried out to evaluate general characteristics of the water quality, total coliform, fecal coliform and microflora at the St. 1 to St. 3 and St. 4 to St. 7. Eighty-four water samples were collected from the 7 stations from July 1988 to April 1990 (see Fig. 1) Range and mean value of the samples were as follows water temperature 2.0-29.9$^{\circ}$C, 16.3$^{\circ}$C pH 6.86-9.08, 7.62: electrical conductivity 54.85$\mu \mho$/cm, 4.300 m$\mho$/cm, 911.93 $\mu \mho$/cm : turbidity 0.9-36 NTU, 6.8 NTU, respectively. pH and electrical conductivity at St. 4 to St. 7 were higher than those at St. 1 to St. 3, but turbidity at St. 1 to St. 2 was 7 times higher than that at Sonagdong river area. The bacterial density of the samples ranged 91-110,000/100ml for total coliform. 21-15,000/100ml for fecal coliform. Specially, the geometric mean value of the St. 3 was 11,836 / 100ml for it leveled heavy contaminaiton. Predominant species among the 3,874 strains isolated form the samples were 30.6% Enterobacteriaceae, 14.7% Acinetobacter, 9.0% Aeromonas. 8.9% Neisseria, and 7.5% Vibrio.
This study was carried out to know the influence of turbidity of submerged water on photosynthetic rate of rice plant after water submerging treatment. Rice plants were transplanted in the pot at maximum tillering stage and they were sumberged for 3days at meiotic stage, 20days after transplanting, in the plastic container which had the clear and turbid water temperature adjusted around 24 to $25^{\circ}C$. Photosynthetic rate at 6 hours recovery after submergence was 41.5 to 54.2% compared to the control, but in the case of cultivar 'Nagdongbyeo', it was rapidly increased by 97.3 to 104.6% in the clear water and by 68.6 to 77.5% in the turbid water at 2 to 4 days recovery after submergence. Photosynthetic rates per plants at 6 hours to 4 days recovery after submergence were 128.3 to 245.5 $C_2$ mg.hr.$^{-1}$, in 'Samgamgbyeo' and 71.1 to 162.4 $CO_2$, mgㆍhr.$^{-1}$ in 'Nagdongbyeo' Photosynthetic rate to respiration ratio of rice plant recovery after submergence was lower compared to control plant and it was lower in 'Nagdongbyeo' than that in 'Samgangbyeo'.ngbyeo' than that in 'Samgangbyeo'.gangbyeo'.pos;.

Phase behavior of a PEO-PPO-PEO (Pluronic P103) triblock copolymer in water is investigated using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and rheology. Pluronic P103 shows apparent two gel states in different temperature regions. The first sol-to-gel transition at a lower temperature (i.e., the hard gel I state) turns out to be the hexagonal microphase as evidenced by the combined SANS and SAXS and the frequency dependence of both G′ and G" in rheology. In contrast to the hard gel I, the second sol-to-gel transition (i. e., the hard gel II state) at a higher temperature represents the block copolymer micelles in somewhat disordered state rather than the ordered state seen in the hard gel I. Moreover, turbidity change depending only on the temperature with four distinct regions is observed and the large aggregates with size larger than 5,000 nm are detected with DLS in the turbid solution region. Based upon the present study, two different gelation mechanisms for aqueous PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymer solutions are proposed.

This study used a batch DAF (dissolved air flotation) jar tester to evaluate the algae removal efficiency of alum and PAC coagulants during coagulation, flocculation, and flotation. Optimal coagulant dosages were 0.06 ~ 0.15 mL/L (12.0 ~ 26.0 mg Al/L,17%), 0.08 ~ 0.20 mL/L (10.0 ~ 24.0 mg Al/L, 12%), 0.25 ~ 0.30 mL/L (25.0 ~ 30.0 mg Al/L, 10%) for PAC, and 3.0 ~ 5.0 mL/L (81.0 ~ 135.0 mg Al/L, 2.7%) for alum. Turbidity of treated water was 1.0 ~ 2.0 NTU in optimal coagulation, flocculation, and flotation conditions for the four coagulants types. The amount of coagulant injected tended to decrease with increasing Al content in the coagulant, as follows : 17% PAC < 12% PAC < 10% PAC < 2.7% alum. Turbidity removal efficiencies were in the order of 12% PAC (93.6%) > 10% PAC (92.7%) > 17% PAC (91.3%) > 2.7% Alum (88.1%).

This study aims at an assessment of the effectiveness of taste & odor removal and transmembrane pressure changes in a pilot membrane plant(500m3/day) by adding PAC to MF process, and at providing a basis for applying it to the advanced water treatment process. The transmembrane pressure showed, in low turbidity of raw water, a tendency to decrease when PAC was injected at the Flux of 1, $1.5m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$, while it increased in high Flux($1.5m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$) in high turbidity of raw water. in addtion, it is shown that the fouling could be reduced more when PAC is injected together with appropriate amount of coagulant, than when PAC is solely injected. Taste & Odor-causing 2-MIB may not be detected in membrane filtered water, if the amount of PAC injection is increased in accordance with the increasing concentration of 2-MIB. Hence, PAC injection, as a pre-treatment process in MF membrane filtering, is supposed to be a suitable process for reducing fouling as well as for improvement effectiveness of taste & odor treatment.
This study was carried out to evaluate the pollutant removal efficiencies of the advanced drinking water treatment using ozonation. for raw water, Nakdong River was used. By conducting batch ozonation test, the following results were obtained. when ozone dosage of 5mg/$\ell$was used, preozonation of raw water reduced turbidity, KMnO$_4$consumption, DOC(dissolved organic carbon), UV254 absorbance, THMFP(trihalomethane formation potential) as much as 3.9NTU, 5.5mg/$\ell$, 1.15mg/$\ell$, 0.112 and 0.065mg/$\ell$, respectively. In case of postozonation of sand filtered water, water quality was also improved with decrease in turbidity, KMnO$_4$consumption, DOC, UV254 absorbance and THMFP at the amount of 0.08NTU, 2.6mg/$\ell$, 0.88mg/$\ell$, 0.042 and 0.018mg/$\ell$, respectively. On the other hand, contents of dissolved oxygen increased at the level of 1.3mg/$\ell$ after preozonation process and 1.0mg/$\ell$ after postozonation process. The effect of ozone dosage was higher than that of its contact time for the removal of the pollutants.
