CaCl2 and water soluble degraded chitosan mixtures were used as coagulants for extending the shelf life of tofu. Microbial counts, pH, and turbidity in tofu immersion solution were analyzed during the periods of storage at 4oC and physico chemical properties of tofu were determined by rheological properties, color and yield. There was no significant difference in moisture content and yield between tofu made with and without chitosan. Failure stress and stress relaxation values were reduced when chitosan was added to CaCl2, but there was no significant change among contents of chitosan added to tofu. The pH values were decreased at the beginning and then slowly increased after 14 days storage. The changes in turbidity were increased during storage, but the change in 2.0g degraded chitosan mixture with 7.0g CaCl2 coagulant(2.0:7.0 ratio) was lower than others and initial turbidity was lower as much as chitosan added to coagulant. These data showed that the water soluble degraded chitosan had a good anti microbial effect and increases the shelf life of tofu.
The objective of present work is to evaluate the optimum coagulation conditions in order to decrease dissolved organic carbon(DOC) and turbidity at different polyaluminum chloride dosage and pH from Nakdong River water. This studies were carried out to examine distribution on apparent molecular weight(AMW) of DOC in the Nakdong River water and its coagulation-sedimentation water. On the basis of jar tests, at the optimum coagulation pH in order to decrease DOC and turbidity were pH 5.0~6.0 and optimum dosage of polyaluminum chloride were 10~15mg $Al_2O_3/L$. The removal percentage of DOC and UV-254 absorbance were 35~40%, 45~60%, respectively. In pilot plant, at the optimum coagulation pH in order to decrease DOC and turbidity were 5.0-6.5, and the removal percentage of DOC were 30~45%. Distributions of AMW in the Nakdong River, less than 6,800dalton were 60.7% 6,800~11,000dalton were 32.8%, more than 11,000dalton were 6.4%. When the polyaluminum chloride dosage was 12~20mg/L, the removal percentages of each AMW for AMW of Nakdong River water, less than 6,800dalton were 25~28%, 6,800~11,000dalton were 65~68% more than 11,000dalton were 10~60%.
The roles of polypropylene (PP) beads and pH on membrane fouling and treatment efficiency were investigated in a hybrid advanced water treatment process of tubular carbon fiber membranes (ultrafiltration (UF) or microfiltration (MF)) and PP beads. The synthetic feed including humic acid and kaolin flowed inside the membrane, and the permeated contacted the PP beads fluidized in the space between the membrane and the module with UV irradiation and periodic water back-flushing. In the hybrid process of UF ($0.05{\mu}m$) and PP beads, final resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$) after 180 min increased as PP beads increased. The turbidity treatment efficiency was the maximum at 30 g/L; however, that of dissolved organic matters (DOM) showed the highest at PP beads 50 g/L. The $R_f$ strengthened as pH of feed increased. It means that the membrane fouling could be inhibited at low alkali condition. The treatment efficiency of turbidity was almost constant independent of pH; however, that of DOM showed the maximum at pH 5. For MF ($0.1{\mu}m$), the final $R_f$ was the minimum at PP beads 40 g/L. The treatment efficiencies of turbidity and DOM were the maximum at PP beads 10 g/L.
Environmental factors and phytoplankton community in Lake Doam were monthly investigated at 3 stations from April 2009 to November 2009. During the study period, the concentrated rainfalls occurred at between July and August and then the TP and turbidity were sharply increased in in-lake. A total of 91 phytoplankton species was classified and these were consisted of 38 Bacillariophyceae, 35 Chlorophyceae, 10 Cyanophyceae, and 8 other species. Bacillariophyceae and Chlorophyceae were dominated during the seasonal succession of phytoplankton community, especially summer season. Bacillariophyceae was dominated from spring season to summer season and Chlorophyceae was dominated at summer season and autumn season. However, the dominance of Cyanophyceae generally developed at summer season in eutrophic water was not observed. From the analysis of correlation coefficient between environmental factors and phytoplankton cell number, we confirmed that there was a negative correlation between turbidity and cyanobacteria cell number (P<0.01). This result indicated that turbid water acts as the inhibitor of the cyanobacteria growth than other phytoplankton community.
CMP (Chemical mechanical polishing) is inevitable process to overcome $0.2{\mu}m$ wire thickness in semiconductor industry. In this study, effect of pressure to separate used CMP slurry into solid and liquid for recycle and reuse by ultrafiltration was investigated. Also, water quality after the ultrafiltration such as turbidity and TDS was evaluated. The material of membrane used in the study was PVDF. The used CMP contained 0.5% of solid content and then concentrated up to 18% by weight. The used CMP can not be concentrated higher than 18% because of viscosity and abrasion of pump. The tested feed pressures were 22.1, 29.4 and 36.8 psi. The results have shown that operating at 36.8 psi has advantages on operation time and total flux. The specific flux showed some variation at 1 to 15 of concentration factor but no difference after 15 of concentration factor. Mass balance of solid at initial stage of the operation showed some unbalance because of deposition of solid on the membrane, which was main reason to reduce flux. Turbidity was very stable at lower than 0.2NTU for 22.1 and 36.8 psi of feed pressure.
This study is to investigate the floc structure and removal of turbidity and organic matter by PACI coagulation. The turbidity removal by PACI coagulation was obtained at larger pH range than alum coagulation. And the removal of organic matter was obtained at smaller pH range than that of turbidity. The organic matter was removed by the adsorption of $Al(OH)_3$ precipitates. Floc structure was characterized by measuring fractal dimension and volume diameter using AIA and SALLS. Fractal dimension measured by AIA did not show the different characteristics of floc produced in sweep floe and charge neutralization region. Using SALLS, floes in sweep floc region were found to be larger size and fractal dimension than flocs in charge neutralization region. As pollutant removal increased. larger fractal dimension and size of floc were measured. SALLS method was found to be more useful method to characterize flocs in coagulation than AIA method.
This research explored the feasibility of preparing and utilizing a preformed polymeric solution of Al(III) for coagulation in water treatment. Slow base(NaOH) injection into supersaturated aluminum chloride solutions did produce high yields of the type of Al polymers useful to water treatment applications. PACl's characteristic analysis showed that the quantity of polymeric Al produced at value of $r(OH_{added}/Al)=2.2$ was 83% of the total aluminum in solution, as showing maximum contents and precipitate was dramatically increased when r was increased above 2.35. And PACl was stable during sitoring period so aging effect was negligible. Results of the coagulation of Nakdong river waters with three PACls showed that the effectiveness of the three coagulants can be considered as r = 2.2 > r = 2.0 > r = 2.35 which are also the order of higher polymeric aluminum contents. Coagulation results for synthetic water exhibited optimum dose of 0.25mM Al, for three PACls, but above optimum dose, r = 2.0 and 2.2 PACl impaired the coagulation and sedimentation of turbidity and humic acid because of the restabilization of particulate. The effect of pH for on coagulation of Nak Dong River water showed that it had much effect turbidity and TOC removal, especially near pH 7. But pH effect was little for turbidity and TOC removal when r = 2.35 PACl was used for coagulation, that PACl had much more precipitates content.
The recycled washwater, which has different water quality and is produced about 5 to 20% of the total water volume treated, affects the unit operation of water treatment, especially coagulation process. However, the effects of recycled washwater on unit operation of water treatment have not been fully investigated. In this study, effects of recycled washwater on coagulation process were investigated to find the optimum coagulation condition by analyzing turbidity, $UV_{254}$, TOC removal efficiencies. In addition, effects of recycled washwater on residual Al after coagulation were studied by analyzing soluble and particulate Al. The size distribution and fractal dimension of coagulated also analyzed. The recycled washwater was lower pH than the raw water. And the recycled washwater had higher $UV_{254}$, TOC and residual Al concentration than the raw water. Residual Al concentration of recycled washwater was about 50 times higher than that of raw water. Optimum coagulant dosages on the blending recycled washwater and the raw water for turbidity, $UV_{254}$ and Al removal were lower than that on the raw water. However, TOC removal increased by increasing coagulant dosage. The size and fractal dimension of coagulated particle produced in the blending recycled washwater were larger, which imply faster settling velocity, than those produced in the raw water only.
Gravity thickening process has been widely used in WTP sludge thickening at domestic water treatment plant. The operation method of the process is very simple, however, the process requires long detention time about 24~48 hours for sludge thickening, uses polymer, and low total solids of thickened sludge to increase sludge thickening efficiency. To solve there problems, we studied about flotation process, especially, electro-flotation (EF) process in WTP sludge thickening. Electro-flotation process is simpler than dissolved-air-flotation(DAF) process because EF needs only electrode and current to generate micro-bubbles and the operation is easy. This study was performed at two batch columns to compare interface height, total solids, effluent turbidity between an electro-flotation thickening and a gravity thickening. According to the result, an electro-flotation thickening was that interface height was decreasing, total solids had high concentration, and effluent turbidity was low in comparison with a gravity thickening. Also, it will make the high efficiency of following process, such as a dehydrating process and digestive process. because of high total solids and low moisture content in the sludge.
This study focuses on the application of a new measurement method that quantifies the residual color of filtered water using a spectrocolorimeter after filtering the discolored substances. It was confirmed through the color and turbidity cross-test that the discolored substances cannot be measured effectively with the current legal color and turbidity test method. Therefore, the National Institute of Environmental Research's filter testing method, which involves filtering the sample through 0.45 ㎛ filter and visually inspecting the color, was improved. A membrane filter colorimetry (MFC) method was established by measuring the color difference (ΔE*ab(65)) of the filtered filter using a spectrophotometer and expressing it as filter color unit (FCU). Using the MFC method, the FCU for reference materials such as iron and manganese, as well as field samples, was measured. The results showed a high correlation with turbidity, and the color difference patterns varied depending on the type of reference materials and field samples. This indicates that the MFC method is an effective new measurement method of discolored tap water.
