  • This paper is concerned with the assessment of benefits from water quality improvements. The contingent valuation method (CVM) is employed to directly measure the value of the project for the improvement of the water pollution in the Kumgang area. The perceived value of the improved water quality is investigated by using questionnaires to those concerned living near water-polluted area. The questionnaire includes such questions as the amount to willingly pay, the motivation to pay, the reasons of rejecting the payment, and some socio-economic data. The results of the survey show that (1) non-use value of the environmental goods is perceived to be more important than use-value of the environmental goods; (2) "willingness to pay" for the improved water quality varies according to the degree of educational level. income level and ages; (3) the resistance to pay for the project comes from the "polluter's pay principle".

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of tele-physical therapy of health and non-health majors. It can provide basic research data for the provision of medical services in the future by identifying the level of awareness of the need for tele-physical therapy and the factors that affect it. Methods: The subjects were adults aged 20 to 29 in Korea, with 199 participants consisting of 83 health majors and 116 non-health majors. The survey was conducted over a period of 14 days. The survey comprised 19 questions, including 10 questions about general characteristics and 9 questions about tele-physical therapy recognition. The results were statistically analyzed using a statistical package program. Results: There was a significant difference between the two groups regarding the recognition of tele-physical therapy, with an average of 2.64 points in health majors and an average of 1.71 points in non-health majors, showing a low overall score. There was no significant difference in perception of the necessity of tele-physical therapy, with an average of 3.71 points in health majors and an average of 3.49 points in non-health majors, showing a high score, which was defined as a score of 3 or higher. Conclusion: Health and non-health majors showed low awareness of tele-physical therapy. A high level of perceived necessity for tele-physical therapy was shown. In the perception of tele-physical therapy in health majors, 'awareness', 'health improvement', and 'convenience' affect the perception of the necessity of tele-physical therapy. In non-health majors, 'knowledge and skills', 'health improvement', 'expected treatment satisfaction', and 'resolving restrictions on hospital visits' affect the perception of the necessity of tele-physical therapy.

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate perspective teachers' conceptions of liquid-state and get implications for the direction of science curriculum or professional development. The instrument was composed of seven questions focusing on aspects of liquid-state phenomena. The results showed that the participants have various alternative concepts about liquid-state. The problem revealed in almost every question was their macroscopic explanations for the phenomena. In addition, it appeared that the participants seemed to understand phenomena in terminology level, but they didn't know basic reasons or fundamental concepts about the phenomena. It is required to change the curriculum or instructional methods in secondary school and teacher education programs to anchor the scientific concepts on molecular or microscopic level.

  • Despite the overall success of neighbor-based CF methods, there are some fundamental questions about neighbor selection and prediction mechanism including arbitrary similarity, over-fitting interpolation weights, no trust consideration between neighbours, etc. This paper proposes a simple method to compute absolute interpolation weights based on similarity values. In order to supplement the method, two schemes are additionally devised for high-quality neighbour selection and trust metrics based on co-ratings. The former requires that one or more neighbour's similarity should be better than a pre-specified level which is higher than the minimum level. The latter gives higher trust to neighbours that have more co-ratings. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the pure IBCF by about 8% improvement. Furthermore, it can be easily combined with other predictors for achieving better prediction quality.

  • Purpose: This study examined relationships among stress, stress coping strategies, and somatization in mothers-in-law from multi-cultural families in a rural area. Methods: Elderly mothers-in-law (n=227) living with foreign daughters-in-law completed a self-reporting questionnaire. Data were collected from April to August 2009. Questions related to stress (Visual Analog Scale, VAS), coping strategies (Coping Strategy Scale) for stress, and somatization (Symptom Check List 90, Revised). SPSS/WIN 12.0 program was used for descriptive analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analyses. Results: Subjects had a moderate level of stress (5.03). There were significant differences in stress level according to age, educational level, religion, chronic disease, health status, number of children, agreement of an international marriage of her sons, satisfaction in living with a foreign daughter-in-law, and family conflict. Stress showed a significant positive correlation with offensive coping strategy, passive strategy, and somatization. Stress, offensive coping strategy, and passive coping strategy affected the level of somatization. Conclusion: In a family situation involving co-habitation of mother- and foreign daughter-in-law, increased stress experienced by the mother-in-law can lead to increased offensive and passive coping strategies, and increased somatization. More effective means of stress reduction are needed for mothers-in-law from multi-cultural families.

  • This study attempted to predict citizens' emotions regarding mortgage rates using machine learning algorithms. To accomplish the research purpose, I reviewed the related literature and then set up two research questions. To find the answers to the research questions, I classified emotions according to Akman's classification and then predicted citizens' emotions on mortgage rates using six machine learning algorithms. The results showed that AdaBoost was the best classifier in all evaluation categories. However, the performance level of Naive Bayes was found to be lower than those of other classifiers. Also, this study conducted a ROC analysis to identify which classifier predicts each emotion category well. The results demonstrated that AdaBoost was the best predictor of the residents' emotions on home mortgage rates in all emotion categories. However, in the sadness class, the performance levels of the six algorithms used in this study were much lower than those in the other emotion categories.

  • Gene set analysis is a new concept and method. to analyze and interpret microarray gene expression data and tries to extract biological meaning from gene expression data at gene set level rather than at gene level. Compared with methods which select a few tens or hundreds of genes before gene ontology and pathway analysis, gene set analysis identifies important gene ontology terms and pathways more consistently and performs well even in gene expression data sets with minimal or moderate gene expression changes. Moreover, gene set analysis is useful for comparing multiple gene expression data sets dealing with similar biological questions. This review briefly summarizes the rationale behind the gene set analysis and introduces several algorithms and tools now available for gene set analysis.
