The Influence of the Digital Divide in Elderly's Traits

  • The objective of this study was to identify the determinants of digital divide according to the characteristics of the elderly. In order to achieve this objective, this study selected elderly people (${\geq}65$ years old) who used a senior welfare center in Chungcheongbuk-do. The survey was conducted using a self-filling survey method for 12 days. Total 289 copies of questionnaires were used for the analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, gender and age among the demographic characteristics were the factors causing the digital divide of the elderly. Second, education level, economic level, Secondly, education level, economic level, health level, and occupation were factors creating the digital divide of the elderly. This study suggested practical and policy implications based on these results.

  • 본 연구는 디지털 격차가 노인의 디지털 일상생활에 미치는 영향력을 분석하는 것이다. 60세이상의 노년층을 대상으로 디지털 격차에 대한 적응경향성을 측정하여 집단으로 구분하였고, 디지털 의사소통 기술, 디지털 자신감, 디지털 자기통제감, 디지털 생활만족을 측정하였다. 연구모형은 교차설계 모형과 이중매개모형을 적용하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 디지털 격차에 대한 적응 접근성이 높은 집단이 전반적인 디지털 일상생활에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 디지털 격차에 대한 적응 활동성이 높은 집단이 디지털 자기통제감에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 디지털 의사소통 기술이 디지털 생활만족에 긍정적인 영향을 미치며, 디지털 자신감과 디지털 자기통제감은 매개역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로 노년층의 디지털 격차에 대한 극복 전략에 대해 논의하였다.

A Comparative Study on Elderly Persons' Adoption Patterns of Media Information (Newspaper, Smartphone, Etc.) and Digital Divide

  • This study found the digital divide of Korean elderly persons on the basis of the 2013-2017 survey data of the perception of media information adopters. The studied media were traditional ones, such as newspaper and TV. The media dependence of those in their 20s to 60s was compared and analyzed. As a result, regarding their dependence on newspaper, elderly persons in their 60s had 20.7% on average, 13.6% higher than the percentage (7.1%) of young persons. Regarding their dependence on TV, those in their 60s had 97.6% and those in their 20s had 63.7%, so that there was a wide gap of 33.9% on average. The smartphone penetration rate of those in their 60s was 61.3%(2015-2017) on average, which tended to rise. The elderly's dependence on traditional media featured Digital Divide which is found in the informatization process. Accordingly, in order to solve their digital divide, it is required to expand education in line with their knowledge level through remote online centers, develop inclusive ICT for convenience, and change philosophical policy paradigm in the dimension of quality of life.

노년층의 성취자본이 디지털자본 획득에 미치는 영향 연구 - 디지털 기기 이용 태도와의 관계를 중심으로 (A Study on the Effect of Accomplished Capital of the Elderly on Digital Capital - Focusing on the Relationship with Digital Device Use Attitudes)

  • 한동안 사람들의 관심에서 멀어졌던 디지털 격차 이슈가 디지털 전환의 급속한 진행으로 재부상하고 있다. 최근 디지털 격차는 기기 소유 여부를 넘어 디지털 기기에 대한 접근과 활용 역량의 차이가 경제적, 사회적 불평등과 차별을 심화시킨다는 쪽으로 논의가 확대되고 있다. 그 어떤 계층보다 노년층이 사회로부터 배제되고 소외되는 현상이 심각하다. 이에 따라 노년층 디지털 격차 현상에 대한 이해를 높여 디지털 격차 해소에 실질적인 도움을 주고자 본 연구를 진행했다. 이를 위해 노년층 디지털 기기 활용과 관련하여 삶의 과정에서 획득한 '성취자본'과 디지털 기기 이용 태도 등의 관계를 고찰했다. 분석은 '2020 디지털 정보격차 실태조사' 결과를 활용하여 65세 이상 노년층 653명을 대상으로 진행했다. 분석 결과, 디지털 기기 이용 태도를 중심으로 학력자본, 소득자본, 사회자본, 정서자본 등의 성취자본이 노년층의 디지털 역량 자본에 다양한 방식으로 영향을 미치는 것을 확인했다. 이를 토대로 노년층 디지털 격차 해소를 위한 다양한 방안을 제안했다.

  • ICT를 사용할 수 있는 능력은 이제 정보화 시대에 살아가기 위한 필수 전제 조건이며, 디지털 정보에 접근해 이를 활용할 수 있는 디지털 문해력은 그 중요성이 더욱 증대되고 있다. 이에 따라 디지털 정보와 지식에 접근하고 받아 들이는 것과 관련된 사회적 불평등 즉 디지털 정보격차도 전 세계적으로 중요한 사회적 이슈가 되고 있다. 특히 연령으로 인한 디지털 정보격차는 사회적 불균형 해소라는 관점뿐 아니라 노년층의 생존에서 더 나아가 경제의 구조적 문제 해결과도 직결되면서 주요 이슈가 되고 있다. 본 연구는 사회정서적 선택 이론의 관점에서 노년층의 디지털 격차에 대해서 해소방안을 모색하기 위해 노년층과 청년층 소비자를 대상으로 실험을 진행하였다. 그 결과 정보처리 의도와 정보처리 성과에 대한 기대에 있어 노년층과 청년층의 차이는 목표일관성에 따라 다른 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 이 같은 결과를 통해 노년층 소비자들이 디지털 방식의 정보습득에 덜 적극적인 원인으로 목표 비일관성의 역할을 제시하고 이를 근거로 학문적 및 실무적 시사점을 제시하였다.

노인층을 포함한 성인들의 인터넷 이용실태 조사 및 고령화 사회의인터넷 사용자를 위한 효과적 대안 (A Study on the Adult Internet Usage and an Effective Alternative for the Elderly Internet Users in the Aging Society)

  • Although population of the elderly is increasing rapidly, the older adults are the least users of the Internet in Korea. Prior research suggests that older adults are physically and psychologically disadvantaged when using the Internet. With the existence of the digital divide over different age groups, the objectives of this study were to identify the current status of Internet usage of Korean adults and to suggest some alternatives for solving digital divide on Internet usage. A total of 654 Korean adults, including the elderly, participated in both on-line and off-line (on-site interview) surveys using structured questionnaires. The results of statistical analyses indicated that the gap between the percentages of Internet users in younger and older groups was significantly wide, though many older adults had strong interests of Internet. To reduce this gap on digital divide, with an appropriate help from family and government, several characteristics of the elderly should be considered in designing some age-related web sites. Some effective alternatives suggested in this study may be used as basic data for universal design of Internet-oriented software.

Study on Current Status and Cause Analysis of Digital Divide for Low-Income Class in Korea

  • With the development of information and communication technology, modern people are receiving various benefits, and knowledge and use of information and communication technology are becoming essential qualities in modern people's lives. There are people who do not enjoy the rich benefits of this information and communication society, and the so-called 'digital divide' acts as an obstacle that prevents the information and communication from enjoying a rich life. Currently, there are four major information underprivileged classes in Korea, the disabled, the elderly, low-income class and farmers and fishermen, respectively. The purpose of this study is to identify the current status of the digital divide for the low-income class and to analyze the causes of the digital divide. To this end, in this study, we analyze statistics on digital divide at the national level and analyzed the digital divide of low-income class from three perspectives: information access, information capability, and information use. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the lack of information capability was the biggest cause of the digital divide, and in particular, information management ability was the most insufficient among information capabilities.

가상현실(Virtual Reality) 기반 복합인지중재 프로그램이 노인의 인지기능, 우울, 디지털 격차 해소에 미치는 영향: 탐색적 연구 (The Effect of Virtual Reality-Based Complex Cognitive Training Program on Cognitive Function, Depression, Digital Divide Reduction in the Elderly: An exploratory study)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a virtual reality-based complex cognitive training program for depression, cognitive function, and digital divide reduction in the elderly who have not been diagnosed with dementia or MCI. Methods : We enrolled 16 participants who were over 65 years old and not been diagnosed with dementia or MCI. We randomly divided into three groups (A, B, C). Participants underwent an 8-week virtual reality-based complex cognitive training program (60 minutes each session, twice per week). At a baseline, all participants completed questionnaires on general features, depression and cognitive function. After four weeks, all participants completed questionnaires on depression and cognitive function. After the end of the last program, participants conducted questionnaires on depression, cognitive function, and usability evaluation. Results : At the 8-week follow-up, 16 participants completed the program. Compared to the baseline, the average score of cognitive function was increased (from 26.5 to 28.5), although it was not statistically significant (p<.061). There were no significant differences between baseline and post-training evaluations on depression scores. The average score of usability evaluation was 75.56, which corresponds to good. Conclusion : Even though the results showed no statistically significant findings in cognitive function and depression after the virtual reality-based complex cognitive training intervention, this pilot study proposed the possibility of utilizing the virtual reality program as a tool that provides active learning opportunities for the elderly and helps improve their cognitive function through multi-sensory components. Also, the findings of this study suggested a positive reevaluation of the elderly's digital access capabilities while reducing the digital divide. A virtual reality-based complex cognitive training program improved the social network of the elderly. We expect that it will expand in size and help with their social participation of the elderly.

디지털 정보격차 관련 국내 연구 동향 분석 (Research Trend Analysis of Digital Divide in South Korea)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 디지털 정보격차 관련 국내 연구의 주요 이슈와 경향을 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 2003년부터 2020년까지의 관련 논문 488건을 대상으로 연도별 논문 건수과 학술지 주제 영역을 분석하였으며, 추가적으로 토픽모델링과 단어네트워크 분석을 통해 연구 주제를 파악하였다. 분석 결과를 살펴보면, 첫째, 2007년까지 논문 건수가 증가하다가 이후 10년간 증감을 반복한 후 2019년부터 급증하는 것으로 나타났으며, 둘째, 사회과학, 복합학, 공학, 예술체육학 등 다양한 학문분야에서 연구가 이뤄지고 있으나, 최근 연구를 주도하는 분야는 사회과학과 복합학 분야인 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 토픽모델링과 단어 네트워크 분석을 통해 연구의 주제는 '지역 간 디지털 정보격차', '장애인 디지털 정보격차', '디지털 정보격차의 기술적 환경', '디지털 정보 활용과 영향 격차', '디지털 정보격차의 법·제도적 환경', '노인 디지털 정보격차' 등 6개로 분류되었다. 넷째, 최근 들어 '디지털 정보 활용과 영향 격차', '디지털 정보격차의 기술적 환경'에 관련된 주제가 관심을 많이 받고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

고령층 정보화 교육 활성화 방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Improvement of Information Education for the Elderly)

  • The ability to use and utilize information technology devices in the knowledge-based society shows many differences in terms of quality of life. However, in the case of the elderly, the elderly suffer difficulties in acquiring information technology due to their aging characteristics, so they can not easily adapt to rapidly changing societies. Therefore, it is becoming more and more important to educate the elderly who are trying to adapt to the new environment of knowledge-based society. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the previous researches of the researchers related to the elderly informatization education and the report of the actual situation of the digital divide of the government, and identified the problems and suggested ways to activate the effective education for the aged. The following suggestions are made to activate information education. First, there is a need for systematic promotion and professional counseling on the need for information education for the elderly learners. Second, the development of various curriculum that can be used in real life. Third, development of customized learning materials. etc. Fourth, Obtain a professional lecturer for the elderly. It is limited to lecturers who have completed teaching and learning methods that reflect the characteristics of the elderly. Fifth, the introduction of qualification certification system that can measure the level of informatization of the elderly learners. Sixth, building e-learning system for elderly people. Seventh, to establish a new organization dedicated solely to information education for the elderly. When these parts are realized, it will help elderly people to improve their quality of life through alleviation of solitude and alienation.
