  • We have studied transparent top gate Al-Zn-Sn-O (AZTO) TFTs with an $Al_2O_3$ protective layer (PL) on an active layer. We also fabricated a transparent 2.5 inch QCIF+AMOLED display panel using the AZTO TFT back-plane. The AZTO active layers were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering at room temperature and the PL was deposited by ALD with two different processes. The mobility and subthreshold slope were superior in the cases of the vacuum annealing and the oxygen plasma PL compared to the $O_2$ annealing and the water vapor PL, however, the bias stability was excellent for the TFTs of the $O_2$ annealing and the water vapor PL.

  • By using vacuum in-line driving and photoluminescence measuring system, we have examined the electrical and optical characteristics of plasma display panel produced by vacuum in-line sealing technology. In addition, the relationship between luminous efficiency and base vacuum level before filling discharge gas was analyzed. In the case of base vacuum level of $1.33{\times}10^{-1}$ Pa, the firing voltage of a 2-inch diagonal PDP panel was ranged from 312 to 343 V depending on the discharge gas pressure of $2.667{\times}10^4$ to $4{\times}10^4$ Pa at room temperature, Whereas in the case of $1.33{\times}10^{-4}$ Pa, the firing voltage was reduced by 40 V and luminescence was improved slightly.

  • Effects of base vacuum level on the electrical and optical characteristics of the plasma display panel (PDP) were investigated. The relationship between efficiency and base vacuum level before filling discharge gas was analyzed. For the base vacuum level of $1{\times}10^{-4}$ torr, firing voltage of a 2-inch diagonal PDP panel was 232 V at the discharge gas pressure of 400 torr and luminous efficiency was 1.5 lm/W at 180V sustaining pulse. On the other hand for $1{\times}10^{-6}$torr, the firing voltage was reduced to 215 V and luminous efficiency was improved considerably to 2.5 lm/W. We successfully demonstrated the smooth operation of tip-less PDP fabricated using vacuum in-line sealing method.

  • This paper shows that the boundary image sticking can be prohibited completely by using the vacuum sealing process, which means that the residual impurities such as nitrogen or oxygen can be a critical factor inducing the boundary image sticking. The production of boundary image sticking was checked in the test panel fabricated by the $N_2$ or $O_2$ flow during the vacuum sealing process. As a result, the boundary image sticking did not appear in the case of $N_2flow$, whereas the boundary image sticking was observed in the case of $O_2$ flow even though the test panel was fabricated by the vacuum sealing process.

  • The switching power loss due to the panel capacitance during sustain period in AC PDP driving system can be minimized by using the energy recovery circuits. We proposed a new energy recovery circuit, SER1 (Seoul national univ. Energy Recovery circuit 1st). The experimental results of its application to a 42-inch surface discharge type AC PDP showed superior performance of SER1 in energy recovery efficiency and low distortion voltage waveform. Energy recovery efficiency of SER1 was measured up to 92.3 %, and the power dissipation during the sustain period was reduced by 15.2 W in 2000 pulse/frame compared with serial LC resonance energy recovery circuit.

  • The detailed studies regarding to the front and rear panel geometries of plasma display were needed to improve the luminance and efficiency. In plasma displays, 3-dimensional optical code can be used to analyze the variation of geometries and the changing of optical properties. The visible light distributions and illuminance were simulated depending on bus electrode position, ITO geometries, and alteration of dielectric layer's properties. This paper is concerned with development of a cell having high luminance and high efficiency for optical simulation. And the result of values could be expected to the application of real POP cell.

  • An analysis has been carried out to investigate the effect of the reflectivity on the temperature distribution of a glass panel by infrared radiant heating. Halogen lamps are used to heat the panel, located near the top and bottom of the rectangular chamber. The thermal energy is transferred from the lamps to the panel only by radiation and it is considered by using view factor. The conductive transfer is limited inside the panel. The results show that the uniformity of the temperature distribution of the panel is improved and, at the same time, the time for heating increases as the wall reflectivity increases. The temperature difference between the center and the corner reaches a maximum in the early stage of the heating process and then decreases until it reaches a uniform steady-state value.

  • We propose a new PDP cell structure named DIDE (Dual Ignition Discharge Electrodes) structure with a long electrode gap to realize a high luminous efficacy. Suggested DIDE structure basically has a long electrode gap $(200{\mu}m{\sim}400{\mu}m)$, nevertheless, because of auxiliary electrodes formed on the front panel, can be driven at relatively low voltage. The discharge characteristic of DIDE structure was much different from that of conventional structure, which was analyzed by IR emission images using IICCD (Image Intensified Charge Coupled Device). The study can explain some particular characteristics of DIDE structure. As a result, the long electrode gap and low voltage effect can be expected in DIDE structure, and a very high luminous efficacy of 7.5 lm/W has been achieved in monochrome green test panel adopting the new cell structure with Ne-Xe (12%) mixture at 400 torr.

  • Luminance and contrast ratio is one of the most fundamental and important parameters of plasma display panel. Understanding the effects of cell design parameters on the display and background luminance is inevitable for improving the contrast ratio. We report the experimental results on the relationships between cell parameters and contrast ratio of the ac PDP driven by ADS scheme. It was found that the contrast ratio is the most significantly affected by rib height and optimum range of the rib height simultaneously affects the facing discharge during the reset periods, diffusion loss of plasma and shadowing of the visible light emitted from phosphor.

  • In this paper, we mainly deal with metallic electrode materials and patterning processing of plasma display panels. We focus on the recent development status, where low cost and high performance electrode materials such as Ag-based single-layered bus, low cost-in-use and anti-migration address electrodes are briefly introduced. The technological trends and further works on novel electrode materials and processing are also discussed.
