  • An integrated simulation tool for multilayer stepped pyramidal structures is presented. The tool, based on a semi-analytical mathematical strategy, is able to calculate the temperature distributions and thermal stresses at the interfaces between the layers of such structures. The core of the thermal solver is the analytical simulator for power electronic devices, DJOSER, which has been supplemented with a mechanical solver based on the finite-element method. To this end, a new ele-ment is proposed whose geometry is defined by its mean surface and thickness, just as in a plate. The resulting mechanical model is fully three-dimensional, in the sense that the deformability in the direction orthogonal to the mean surface is taken into account. The dedicated finite element code developed for solving the equilibrium problem of structures made up of two or more superimposed plates subjected to thermal loads is applied to some two-layer samples made of silicon and copper. Comparisons performed with the results of standard finite element analyses using a large number of brick elements reveal the soundness of the strategy employed and the accuracy of the tool developed.

  • This study aims to estimate crack location and crack length in damaged beam structures using transfer matrix formulations, which are based on analytical solutions of governing equations of motion. A single variable shear deformation theory (SVSDT) that considers parabolic shear stress distribution along beam cross-section is used, as well as, Timoshenko beam theory (TBT). The cracks are modelled using massless rotational springs that divide beams into segments. In the forward problem, natural frequencies of intact and cracked beam models are calculated for different crack length and location combinations. In the inverse approach, which is the main concern of this paper, the natural frequency values obtained from experimental studies, finite element simulations and analytical solutions are used for crack identification via plots of rotational spring flexibilities against crack location. The estimated crack length and crack location values are tabulated with actual data. Three different beam models that have free-free, fixed-free and simple-simple boundary conditions are considered in the numerical analyses.

  • In this study, nonlinear analysis of steel plane frame was performed using the refined plastic hinge method of advanced analysis techniques. In deterioration of stiffness in plastic zone, influences by flexural bending, residual stress, geometrical non-linearity, and semi-rigid connection are considered. And also, further reduced tangent modulus was used for geometrical non-linearity, top and seat angle were chosen for semi-rigid connection. Furthermore, 3 parameter power model was used for moment-rotation behaviour of beam to column connection. The loading conditions are combined with axial and lateral force and the inverse triangle distribution of lateral and eight type of analytical models were used in analysis. The results of analyses were compared with semi-rigid and rigid connection on behaviour of numerical analysis models. And also, the behaviors of frame with changes of semi-rigidity were analyzed by using the results obtained from MIIDAS-GENw.

  • The accurate analysis of ultrasonic wave propagation and scattering plays an important role in many aspects of nondestructive evaluation. A numerical analysis makes it possible to perform parametric studies, and in this way the probability of detection and reliability of test results can be improved. In this paper, a finite element method was employed for the analysis of ultrasonic wave propagation in anisotropic materials, and the accuracy of results was checked by comparing with analytical predictions. The element size and the integral time step, which are the critical components for the convergence of finite element solutions, were determined using a commercial finite element code. Some differences for wave propagation in anisotropic media were illustrated when plane waves are propagating in a unidirectionally reinforced composite materials. When plane waves are propagating in nonsymmetric directions in a symmetric plane, deviation angles between the wave vector and the energy vector were found from finite element analyses and the results agreed well with analytical calculations.

  • This paper proposes an analytical solution method for free vibration of curved functionally graded (FG) nonlocal beam supposed to different thermal loadings, by considering porosity distribution via nonlocal elasticity theory for the first time. Material properties of curved FG beam are assumed to be temperature-dependent. Thermo-mechanical properties of porous FG curved beam are supposed to vary through the thickness direction of beam and are assumed to be temperature-dependent. Since variation of pores along the thickness direction influences the mechanical and physical properties, porosity play a key role in the mechanical response of curved FG structures. The rule of power-law is modified to consider influence of porosity according to even distribution. The governing equations of curved FG porous nanobeam under temperature field are derived via the energy method based on Timoshenko beam theory. An analytical Navier solution procedure is used to achieve the natural frequencies of porous FG curved nanobeam supposed to thermal loadings with simply supported boundary condition. The results for simpler states are confirmed with known data in the literature. The effects of various parameters such as nonlocality, porosity volume fractions, type of temperature rising, gradient index, opening angle and aspect ratio of curved FG porous nanobeam on the natural frequency are successfully discussed. It is concluded that these parameters play key roles on the dynamic behavior of porous FG curved nanobeam. Presented numerical results can serve as benchmarks for future analyses of curve FG nanobeam with porosity phases.

  • This paper presents a novel analytical formulation for the analysis of composite beams with partial shear interaction stiffened by a bolted longitudinal plate accounting for time effects, such as creep and shrinkage. The model is derived by means of the principle of virtual work using a displacement-based formulation. The particularity of this approach is that the partial interaction behaviour is assumed to exist between the top slab and the joist as well as between the joist and the bolted longitudinal stiffening plate, therefore leading to a three-layered structural representation. For this purpose, a novel finite element is derived and presented. Its accuracy is validated based on short-and long-term analyses for the particular cases of full shear interaction and partial shear interaction of two layers for which solutions in closed form are available in the literature. A parametric study is carried out considering different stiffening arrangements to investigate the influence on the short-and long-term behaviour of the composite beam of the shear connection stiffness between the concrete slab and the steel joist, the stiffness of the plate-to-beam connection, the properties of the longitudinal plate and the concrete properties. The values of the deflection obtained from the finite element simulations are compared against those calculated using the effective flexural rigidity in accordance with EC5 guidelines for the behaviour of elastic multi-layered beams with flexible connection and it is shown how the latter well predicts the structural response. The proposed numerical examples highlight the ease of use of the proposed approach in determining the effectiveness of different retrofitting solutions at service conditions.

  • The Transitional zone between bridge abutment and earthwork is one of the representative vulnerable zones in railway where differential settlements may take place due to the different supportive stiffness. Although transitional zones are managed with stricter standards than those of the other earthwork zones either in the design and construction stages, it is very difficult to prevent differential settlement perfectly. A three-dimensional numerical analyses were performed by applying train moving load in this study. The analytical model including abutments and earthwork zones was constituted with rail, sleepers, track concrete layer (TCL), hydraulic stabilized base (HSB), reinforced road bed, and road bed using railway and road base structure. The clamp connecting the rail and sleeper were also modeled as the element with spring coefficient. The train wheel is modeled in the actual size and moved on the rail with 300 km/hr speed. The deformation characteristics at each point of the rail and the ground were considered in detail when moving the train wheel. The analysis results were compared with those from the two-dimensional analysis without considering moving load. The research results show that displacement and stress were greater in the three-dimensional analysis than in other analyses, and the three-dimensional analysis with moving load should be performed to evaluate railway performance.

  • The bending, buckling and free vibration responses of functionally graded material (FGM) beams are investigated semi-analytically by the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) in this paper. In the concepts of the SBFEM, the dimension of computational domain can be reduced by one, therefore only the axial dimension of the beam is discretized using the higher order spectral element, which reduces the amount of calculation and greatly improves the calculation efficiency. The governing equation of FGM beams is derived in detail by the means of the principle of virtual work. Compared with the higher-order beam theory, fewer parameters and simpler control equations are used. And the governing equation is transformed into a first-order ordinary differential equation by introducing intermediate variables. Analytical solutions of the governing equation can be obtained by pade series expansion in the direction of thickness. Numerical example are compared with the numerical solutions provided by the previous researchers to verify the accuracy and applicability of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed formulations can quickly converge to the reference solutions by increasing the order of higher order spectral elements, and high accuracy can be achieved by using a small number of the elements. In addition, the influence of the structural sizes, material properties and boundary conditions on the mechanical behaviors of FG beams subjected to different load types is discussed.

  • The time-dependent temperature distribution across the section in bridges is determined on the basis of the three-dimensional finite element analyses and numerical time integration in this study. The material properties which change with time and thermal stress of concrete are taken into account to effectively trace the early-age structural responses. Since the temperature distribution is nonlinear and depends upon many material constants such as the thermal conductivity, specific heat, hydration heat of concrete, heat transfer coefficients and solar radiation, three representative influencing factors of the construction season, wind velocity and bridge pavement are considered at the parametric studies. The validity of the introduced numerical model is established by comparing the analytical predictions with results from previous analytical studies. On the basis of parametric studies for four different bridge sections, it is found that the creep deformation in concrete bridges must be considered to reach more reasonable design results and the temperature distribution proposed in the Korean bridge design specification need to be improved.

  • Steel suspension members subjected to tension and bending offer an economical and efficient alternative for many structural problems. This paper is concerned with the elastic and elastic-plastic behaviour of suspension members with bending stiffness subjected to vertical point and uniformly distributed loads. An experimental study is described which focuses on the response of three suspension members with various T-shaped steel hot rolled sections and geometric configurations. The tests enable direct assessment of the influence of a key parameter such as the sag-to-span ratio on the response of suspension members. Detailed nonlinear finite-element models are generated to provide a tool for theoretical analyses and to facilitate further understanding of the behaviour. Results demonstrate that experimentally obtained responses can generally be closely predicted numerically because there are relatively good agreements between finite element and tests results. The results and observations of subsequent numerical parametric studies offer an insight into the key factors that govern the behaviour of suspension members with bending stiffness in the elastic-plastic range.
