  • In this study, the seismic analysis of rack structure with fluid-structure interaction is performed through use of the Finite Element Method(FEM) code ANSYS. Fluid-structure interaction can specify in terms of an hydrodynamic effect which is defined as the added mass per unit length divided by the area of the cross section. Using the Floor Response Spectrum(FRS) obtained through the time-history analysis, modal analysis and seismic analysis under Operating Basis Earthquake(OBE) and Safe Shutdown Earthquake(SSE) condition is carried out. The fluid-structure interaction effects on the rack structure are investigated.

  • Coalbed methane has a nonlinear desorption curve depending on the pressure, so an appropriate production system should be constructed considering this phenomenon. The capacity and specification of the coalbed methane gas production facility are determined by the gas flow rate and pressure in the coalbed, which is the external boundary condition of the system. Thus, it is essential to analyze these characteristics in gas production. The gas inflow equation was calculated using the reservoir flow model and utilized as the boundary condition of the whole production facility in this study. Also, to understand the effect of pressure drop on the gas flow in the production facility, the nodal analysis was performed using the flow analysis simulator of production equipment, and we determined the proper specifications and operating conditions of the production facility. This study presents a design criteria as to production and gathering system capable of effectively transporting coalbed methane.

  • Operational modal analysis (OMA) allows modal parameters, such as natural frequencies and damping, to be estimated solely from data collected during operation. However, a main shortcoming of these methods resides in the evaluation of the accuracy of the results. This paper will explore the uncertainty and possible variations in the estimates of modal parameters for different operating conditions. Two algorithms based on the Least Square Complex Exponential (LSCE) method will be used to estimate the modal parameters. The uncertainties will be calculated using a Monte-Carlo approach with the hypothesis of constant modal parameters at a given operating condition. In collaboration with Andritz-Hydro Ltd, data collected on two different stay vanes from an Andritz-Hydro Ltd Francis turbine will be used. This paper will present an overview of the procedure and the results obtained.

  • The stability of PF 6-7 has been studied according to the transient analysis code TOKSCPF and quench analysis code QSAIT. We compare the stability and temperature rise with various Cu/SC ratios of 2.8 and 3.5 under the KSTAR normal operating conditions. It shows that the Cu/SC ratio has an influence on the quench propagation and stability margin. In transient operating condition, the Cu/SC ratio weakly influences on the temperature rise in PF magnet.

  • In industrial situation, electronic and electro-mechanical systems have been using different type of batteries in rapidly increasing numbers. These systems commonly require high reliability for long periods of time. Wider application of battery for low-power design as a prime power source requires us knowledge of failure mechanism and reliability of batteries in terms of load condition, environment condition and other explanatory variables. Battery life is an important factor that affects the reliability of such systems. There is need for us to understand the mechanism leading to the failure state of battery with performance characteristic and develop a method to predict the life of such battery. The purpose of this paper is to develope the methodology of monitoring the health of battery and determining the condition or fate of such systems through the performance reliability to predict the remaining useful life of primary battery with load condition, operating condition, environment change in light of battery life variation. In order to evaluate on-going performance of systems and subsystems adopting primary batteries as energy source, The primitive prototype for performance reliability analysis device was developed and related framework explained.

  • A failure analysis of ammonia converter which suffered hydrogen attack in two years since its initial operating time was presented. It is constructed from 2.25 Cr.1 Mo steel. Analysis showed that the failure on closing seam weld joint was due to local improper post weld heat treatment (PWHT). Improper PWHT can introduce high residual stresses in thick-walled pressure vessel. High residual stress level in weld joint is very prone to hydrogen attack for any components which are operating in hydrogen gas environment. The repair procedures based on the principle to decrease the residual stress then proposed. The repair was controlled very carefully by applying several nondestructive tests in the each stage of repair. To assure the successful of the proposed repair, after one year since repair time, high temperature ultrasonic and TOFD methods were applied on-stream to this equipment in order to evaluate its post repair condition. The two methods showed good results on the repaired area.

  • Basic design of 3 MWth chemical looping combustion system for LNG combustion and steam generation was conducted based on the mass and energy balance and the previous reactivity test results of oxygen carrier particles. Process configuration including fast fluidized bed (air reactor), loop seal and bubbling fluidized bed (fuel reactor) was confirmed and their dimensions were determined by mass balance. Then, the external fluidized bed heat exchanger (FBHE) was adopted based on the energy balance to extract heat from the system. The optimum reactor design and operating condition was confirmed with sensitivity analysis by modifying system configuration based on the mass and energy balance.

  • A design methodology for control strategy and control structure gives a direct impact on wind turbine's performance and life cycle. A baseline control law which is a variable rotor speed and variable pitch control strategy is introduced, and a mathematic performance model of a wind turbine dynamics is derived. By using a numeric optimization algorithm, the steady state operating conditions of wind turbines are identified. Because aerodynamic interaction of winds with rotor blades is basically nonlinear, a linearization procedure is applied to analyze wind turbine dynamic variations for whole operating conditions. It turns out the wind turbine dynamics vary much depending on its operating condition.

  • The effects of the changes of a film cooling mass flow rate and operating conditions on wall heat flux characteristics of a subscale calorimetric combustion chamber were investigated by experiment and numerical analysis. At the nominal operating condition, with the film cooling mass flow rate being 10.5 percent of a main fuel mass flow rate, maximum heat flux at the nozzle throat was measured to be 30 percent lower than that without the film cooling. For the relatively higher mixture ratio and chamber pressure condition, maximum heat flux at the nozzle throat was increased by 31 percent compared to that of the nominal condition test without film cooling.

  • A high speed deburring machine was developed based on the analysis of magnetic contact force, forced vibration, stiffness and deformation of the structure. After 3 dimensional CATIA modelling, the stiffness and the deformation properties of the deburring machine in static and dynamic condition using finite element method were analyzed. Both static and dynamic simulation results showed that designed high speed deburring machine was well satisfied the stability properties at the operating condition. we have performance test program for the real system to evaluate the simulation results.
