  • The subject of this study dealt with the structural safety analysis regarding the measured thrust test equipment as noted on a small engine. In this work, the structural design and analysis of steel and aluminum alloy structure for a small engine test of equipment were performed. Firstly, the structural design requirements of the engine test equipment were identified and investigated. After the structural design was reviewed, next the structural analysis of the engine test equipment was performed by the utilization of the finite element analysis method. The study was performed to determine that the stress and displacement analysis was appropriately managed regarding the applied load condition. As a result, it was determined that through the structural analysis, this study has confirmed that the designed engine test equipment is approved for safety, and meets its design purpose at this time.

  • This work conducts a validation study for the XH-59A helicopter using a rigid coaxial rotor system in order to establish the techniques of the conceptual design and performance analysis for the lift-offset compound rotorcraft. As a tool for conceptual design and performance analysis, NDARC (NASA Design and Analysis of Rotorcraft) is used for the present study. An assumed mission profile is considered for the conceptual design of the XH-59A. As a validation result of the design, the dimensions and weight of the XH-59A are appropriately designed when compared to the target values since the relative error is less than 0.5%. Then, performance analyses are conducted for the designed XH-59A model with and without auxiliary propulsion in hover and forward flight conditions. The present analyses show good validity since the prediction results compare well with both the flight test and previous analyses. Therefore, the techniques for the conceptual design and performance analysis of the lift-offset compound helicopter are overall considered to be appropriately established. In addition, this study investigates the influence of the lift-offset on the rotor effective lift-to-drag ratio of the XH-59A helicopter with auxiliary propulsion. As a result, the improvement of the rotor effective lift-to-drag ratio can be obtained by appropriately increasing the lift-offset in high-speed flight.

  • As the computing environment is rapidly improved, the interests of CFD are gradually focused on large-scale computation over complex geometry. Keeping pace with the trend, essential computational tools to obtain solutions of complex aerospace flow analysis and design problems are examined. An accurate and efficient flow analysis and design codes for large-scale aerospace problem are presented in this work. With regard to original numerical schemes for flow analysis, high-fidelity flux schemes such as RoeM, AUSMPW+ and higher order interpolation schemes such as MLP (Multi-dimensional Limiting Process) are presented. Concerning the grid representation method, a general-purpose basis code which can handle multi-block system and overset grid system simultaneously is constructed. In respect to design optimization, the importance of turbulent sensitivity is investigated. And design tools to predict highly turbulent flows and its sensitivity accurately by fully differentiating turbulent transport equations are presented. Especially, a new sensitivity analysis treatment and geometric representation method to resolve the basic flow characteristics are presented. Exploiting these tools, the capability of the proposed approach to handle complex aerospace simulation and design problems is tested by computing several flow analysis and design problems.

  • Design sensitivity analysis for nonlinear structural problems has been emerged in the last decade as a glowing area of engineering research. As a result, theoretical formulations and computational algorithms have already developed for design sensitivity of nonlinear structural problems. There is not enough research for practical nonlinear problems using multi-element, due to difficulties of implementation into FEA. Therefore, nonlinear response analysis for stiffened shell which consists of Mindlin plate and Timoshenko beam, was considered. Specially, it presents the backward-Euler method which is adopted to describe an exact yield state in the stress computation procedure. Then, design sensitivity analysis of nonlinear structures, particularly elasto-perfectly-plastic structure, is developed using direct differentiation method. The accuracy of the developed sensitivity analysis was compared with the central finite difference method. Finally, on the basis of above results, design improvement for stiffened shell is suggested.

  • Analysis technology is widely accepted and quite popular these days. Incorporation of the analysis result into design process is a key factor for the success of the analysis area. A few design software products have been commercialized. Generally, they are trying to make an interface between various design methods and analysis software. Optimization is a representative design method. The products are investigated and compared for the aspects of user convenience and algorithm performance. A few popular products are selected. Graphic user interface (GUI) is compared for the function and efficiency. The performances of the optimization algorithms are tested by mathematical and engineering examples. The results are discussed.

  • Topology optimization methods are classified into two methods such as the density method and the homogenization method. Those methods need to consider relationships between the material property and the density of each element in a design domain, the relaxation of the design space, etc. However, it is hard to apply on some cases due to the complexity to compose the design objective and its sensitivity analysis. In this paper, a modified topology optimization is proposed to assist designers who do not have mathematical or theoretical background of the topology optimization. In this study, optimal topology of structures can be achieved by the sequential design of experiment (DOE) and the sensitivity analysis. We conducted the DOE with an orthogonal array and the sensitivity analysis of design variables to determine sensitive variables used for connectivity between elements. The modified topology optimization method has advantages such as freedom from penalizing intermediate values and easy application with basic DOE concept.

  • Design sensitivity analysis of a vehicle system is an essential tool for design optimization and trade-off studies. Most optimization algorithms require the derivatives of cost and constraint function with respect to design in order to calculate the next improved design. This paper presents an efficient algorithm application for the design sensitivity analysis, using the direct differentiation method. A mounting area of suspension that welded on chassis frame is analyzed to show the validity and the efficiency of the proposed method. • MDO (multidisciplinary design optimization) technology has been proposed and applied to solve large and complex optimization problems where multiple disciplinaries are involved. In this research. an MDO problem is defined for automobile design which has crashworthiness analyses. Crash model which are consisted of airbag, belt integrated seat (BIS), energy absorbing steering system .and safety belt is selected as a practical example for MDO application to vehicle system. Through disciplinary analysis, vehicle system is decomposed into structure subspace and occupant subspace, and coupling variables are identified. Before subspace optimization, values of coupling variables at given design point must be determined with system analysis. The system analysis in MDO is very important in that the coupling between disciplines can be temporary disconnected through the system analysis. As a result of system analysis, subspace optimizations are independently conducted. However, in vehicle crash, system analysis methods such as Newton method and fixed-point iteration can not be applied to one. Therefore, new system analysis algorithm is developed to apply to crashworthiness. It is conducted for system analysis to determine values of coupling variables. MDO algorithm which is applied to vehicle crash is MDOIS (Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Based on Independent Subspaces). Then, structure and occupant subspaces are independently optimized by using MDOIS.
