  • The present paper is concerned with the development of the computational biology in the past half century and its relationship with combustion. The modem computational biology is considered to be initiated by the work of Alan Turing on the morphogenesis in 1952. This paper first touches the life and scientific achievement of Alan Turing and his theory on the morphogenesis based on the reactive-diffusive instability, called the Turing instability. The theory of Turing instability was later extended to the nonlinear realm of the reactive-diffusive systems, which is discussed in the framework of the excitable media by using the Oregonator model. Then, combustion analogies of the Turing instability and excitable media are discussed for the cellular instability, pattern forming combustion phenomena and flame edge. Finally, the recent efforts on numerical simulations of biological systems, employing the detailed bio-chemical knietic mechanism is discussed along with the possibility of applying the numerical combustion techniques to the computational cell biology.

  • It is well known that there are three mechanisms in the nozzle surface regression, namely ablation, mechanical erosion and chemical corrosion. There are Analogies among these three mechanisms. In order to compare the order of the magnitude of these mechanism, the analogy was adapted and the Mach number of the gas flow was expressed by the nozzle shape(location).

  • Barcterial chemotaxis is a transient response of an organism in a situation where environmental homogeneity has been disturbed by certain chemical compounds. The phenomenon has been described in motile bacterial species including enteric bacteria, Gram-positives(14), Spirochaetes (6) and even Archaebacteria (8). However, most comprehensive studies have been done with Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. Two analogies to higher eucaryotic sensory phenomena are provided by the study of bacterial chemotaxis. First, bacterial chemotaxis is similar to the stimulus-response of neuronal, immune and sperm cells. Second, studies of individual components involved in the bacterial sensory pathway can contribute to the understanding of the function of receptors, controling signals and molecular comparators in transmembrane signalling system. The bacterial sensory transducer, a chemoreceptor in a broad sense, is a unique entity for studying sensory function in which sensory reception, signalling and adaptation are integrated (7,18).

  • This paper examines whether the Global Vector model is applicable to Korean data as a universal learning algorithm. The main purpose of this study is to compare the global vector model (GloVe) with the word2vec models such as a continuous bag-of-words (CBOW) model and a skip-gram (SG) model. For this purpose, we conducted an experiment by employing an evaluation corpus consisting of 70 target words and 819 pairs of Korean words for word similarities and analogies, respectively. Results of the word similarity task indicated that the Pearson correlation coefficients of 0.3133 as compared with the human judgement in GloVe, 0.2637 in CBOW and 0.2177 in SG. The word analogy task showed that the overall accuracy rate of 67% in semantic and syntactic relations was obtained in GloVe, 66% in CBOW and 57% in SG.

  • In this study, we investigated the characteristics of pre-service science teachers' curriculum design for lessons using self-generated analogy. Three pre-service science teachers at a college of education in Seoul participated in this study. After a workshop on lessons using self-generated analogy, they planned and demonstrated lessons. All of the teaching-learning materials were collected, and their lessons were observed and videotaped. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted before and after their lessons. The characteristics of lessons using self-generated analogy were analyzed in the perspectives of PCK. The analyses of the results revealed that they used various strategies to promote students' generating analogies. They lacked understanding of the stages of the lessons and the role of teachers. Although all of them considered assessment, they used limited assessment methods and assessment dimensions. Some actively considered students' misconceptions, and specifically anticipated analogies that students could generate. They determined topics for lessons considering various aspects such as the level of self-generated analogy and the characteristics of scientific conceptions. On the bases of the results, we suggest some educational implications for pre-service science teacher education.

  • This study investigated the effects of the instructions using analogies in learning the concept of saturated solution by the analogy presentation types and the verbal learning styles upon the mapping understanding, the mapping errors, and the perceptions of the instruction. Fifth graders (N=123) at an elementary school were selected and assigned to VA (n=63) and VPA (n=60) groups. As a pretest, a test on the verbal learning style was administered. The students in the VA group learned the target concept with a verbal analogy, while those in the VPA group learned it with a verbal/pictorial analogy. After the students learned it, a mapping understanding test was administered. The students in the VPA group also administered the test on the perceptions of the instruction and some of them were interviewed in depth. The results revealed that the scores of the students with strong verbal learning preference in the VPA group were significantly lower than those in the VA group in the mapping understanding test. However, the scores of the students with weak verbal learning preference were not significantly different between the two groups. Five types of mapping errors were identified: failure to map, mismapping, rash mapping, impossible mapping, and mapping of a surficial feature. According to students' verbal learning styles, there were some differences in the frequencies of mapping errors in the two groups. Many students in the VPA group, regardless of their verbal learning styles, had positive perceptions of the instruction in various cognitive and motivational aspects. However, some of them also pointed out a few difficulties of the instruction. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • This study investigated the influences of a student-centered analogical instruction using physical analogies upon students' conception and application, retention of conception and application, perceptions of science classroom environment, and perceptions of analogical instruction. Six classes of seventh graders (N=208) at a middle school in Seoul were assigned to the control, the teacher-centered analogy (TCA), and the student-centered analogy (SCA) groups. They were taught about 'three states of matter' and 'motion of molecules' for 8 class hours. Analysis of the results revealed that the scores of the SCA group were significantly higher than those of the other groups in the conception test, retention test of conception and application, and perception test of science classroom environment. The scores of the SCA group in the application test were also higher than those of the other groups, but there was a significant difference only between the control and the SCA groups. The TCA group performed significantly better than the control group only in the test of the retention of application. In addition, the students in the SCA group exhibited more positive perceptions of the analogical instruction than those in the TCA group. Educational implications are discussed.

  • Convergence in technology and media makes it possible to augment nurturing by making blended infrastructures with new digital resources available in learning environments at schools. A game-based provision of educationally-valuable content within a collective, virtual environment combined with an analysis of events in the game after it has been played (blended nurture environment) may help to better communicate human values especially where old-fashioned discussion methods fail or do not fulfill the promise of effective, educational institution-based methods of bringing up. In this paper we discuss the use of behavioural metaphors in game-based blended-nurture scenarios for computer games and pedagogical-psychological tests. Upbringing demands an active intervention in the process of children growing up and the courage to place higher expectations on ourselves and our own lifestyles. Decisions and the behaviour of the younger generation are often irrational and the resulting effects can have destructive consequences. Nowadays, games take on the role of modern storytellers. With the help of complex analogies in games, a variety of situations can be depicted in an eye-catching way and later discussed.

  • Ring-width chronologies of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) from two experimental forest plots in Kaunas, Lithuania were developed to study tree growth-climate relationship in different geohydrological conditions using response function analysis. The tree ring-width chronologies of Scots pine ranged from 1883~1987 A.D. and 1864~1989 A.D., and Norway spruce 1838~1987 A.D. and 2870~1989 A.D., respectively. The response function analysis has vividly demonstrated that the growth of Scots pine is favoured by warm summer and Norway spruce by cool and moist summer. Spring temperature has shown direct relationship with tree growth of both the species. There also exists notable intraspecies analogies in growth responses except some minor differences.

  • A compact and handhold near infrared (NIR) system using microspectrometer was developed. This system was suitable not only in the laboratory, but also in the field or in the process. This system was first applied for classification of geographical origin of herbal medicine such as ginseng and sesame. To identify the origin of ginseng on site, the portable NIR system is more suitable for real field application. For this study, using the compact NIR system, soft independent modeling of class analogies (SIMCA) with 1100-1750 nm NIR spectra was utilized for classification of geographical origin (Korea and China) of both ginseng and sesame. The accuracy of results is more than 90%. Quantitative analysis for petroleum such as toluene, benzene, tri-methyl benzene, and ethyl benzene was performed with partial least squares (PLS) regression with NIR 1100-1750 nm spectra. This study showed that the NIR method and gas chromatography (GC), which is a standard method, have good correlations. Furthermore, the ash content of Cornu Cervi Parvum was analyzed and the accuracy was confirmed by the developed compact NIR system.
