  • The wastewater treatment with a two-phase expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) system for anaerobic degradation of acetate, benzoate, terephtalate and p-toluate from purified terephtalic acid (PTA) production was studied. The feasibility and effectiveness of the system was evaluated in terms of organic oxidation by chemical oxygen demand (COD), gas production, bacterial adaptability and stability in the granular sludge. Average removal efficiencies 93.5% and 72.7% were achieved in the EGSB reactors under volumetric loading rates of $1.0-15kg-COD/m^3/day$ and terephtalate and p-toluate of 351-526 mg/L, respectively. Gas production reached total methane production rate of 0.30 L/g-COD under these conditions in the sequential EGSB reactor system. Higher strength influent COD concentration above 4.8 g-COD/L related to field conditions was fed to observe the disturbance of the EGSB reactors.

  • The objectives of this study were to examine the biodegradation of phenol using the anaerobic fluidized bed reactor(AFBR). Mixed microorganisms were selected from the anaerobic digestion tank, and could be adapted to high concentration of phenol by increasing the phenol concentration 600-3600 mg/l step by step. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The average removal efficiency of phenol was 90%, decreased by increasing concentration of phenol, and then a shock range was 1200~2400 ppm. 2. The production rate of biogas in overall limits was proportional to the concentration of influent phenol. 3. At steady state, compositions of gases were $CH_4$ 55~60%, $C0_2$ 34~43%, respectively. These were similar to that of the theoretical estimates. 4. The production rates of biogas and methane per the molarity of phenol removed were linearly increased, 56.45 l gas/mol-phenol and 29.20 l $CH_4/mol$-phenol. Using this biogas, the recoverable energy was 269.1 kcal/mol phenol. It was 120.2 kcal/g-COD, transforming into the chemical oxygen demand. 5. The bulk of microorganisms existed in suspended section of fluidized bed with type of biofilm and its concentration was 340 mg/g-media. In conclusion, the anaerobic treatment of pure phenol was possible and its removal efficiency, introducing the AFBR, was successful. Also toxic organic compound such as phenol was biodegradable and was recoverable as resource of energy.

  • Even though the development of livestock industry in Asia and Australasia has brought the economic growth and thus elevated the living standard in these areas, it has also brought the pollution caused by the increasing amount of animal wastes. Among them, Japan probably is the first country that suffered from the animal waste pollution as early as in 1970s. Nowadays, the animal waste pollution has been a common problem for almost every countries in this region. To solve it, different measures and regulations have been implemented in many countries. In this paper, different methods for animal waste disposal are discussed, including: manure-bed animal housing, composting, anaerobic treatment, odor control, utilization of biogas, aerobic treatment, three-step process, N and P removal, land application, cultivation of algae, anaerobic treatment of dead animals. It is hoped that an animal industry without pollution can be achieved in the future.

  • The characteristics of anaerobic degradation of phenol were studied in a fluidized bed reactor using a granular activated carbon as media. Increasing the phenol loading rate with variation of feed concentration was considered as an experimental variable. In the present anaerobic fluidized-bed reactor, the removal efficiency of phenol and COD was maintained about 93-99% and 91-96%, respectively, up to 3.6 kg-phenol/$m^3\cdot d$ of the phenol loading rate, but it was abruptly decreased under 5.0 kg-phenol/$m^3\cdot d$. The volumetric production of biogas per removed phenol was decreased linearly between 0.80-1.27 m$^3$ gas/kg-phenol (0.35-0.56 m$^3$-gas/kg-COD), increasing the phenol loading rate, and the methane content of biogas was 55-60% as similar to that estimated theoretically up to 3.6 kg-phenol/$m^3\cdot d$. But the production rate and methane content of biogas were suddenly decreased at the loading rate of 5.0 kg-phenol/$m^3\cdot d$. Therefore, the anaerobically biodegradable phenol loading rate of the present reactor was 3.6 kg-phenol/$m^3\cdot$ d in order to accomplish over 90% of the removal efficiency.

  • In the wastewater treatment experiment by anaerobic-aerobic packed bed unit, it was found that the high and stable removal efficiency of nitrogen could be obtained. The extent of nitrogen removal gradually decreased with the rise of recycle ratio and DO concentration. On the other hand, the extent of phosphorus increased with the increase of DO concentration. COD showed high removal efficiency over the entire range tested. The simulation of T-N behavior was carried out satisfactorily by using the kinetic equations for biofilm and the reactor model which considered the packed bed as a plug flow reactor.

  • In this study, it was attempted to remove nitrate and carbon in a single-stage reactor using acetate as substrate. Hybrid type upflow sludge baffled filter reactor was adopted using anaerobic sludge. Sludge bed in the bottom of reactor was intended to remove carbon and nitrate by denitrification and methanogenesis. And floating media in the upper part of reactor were intended to remove remaining carbon which was not removed due to the inhibition of nitrogen oxide on methane producing bacteria. The reactor removed over 96% of COD and most of nitrate with volumetric loading rate of $4.0kgCOD/m^3{\cdot}day$, hydraulic retention time of 24hr, 4,000mgCOD/L, and $266mgNO_3-N/L$. Nitrate in anaerobic sludge was converted to nitrogen gas(denitrification) or ammonia (ammonification) according to pH of influent, COD removal efficiency was easily affected by the change of volumetric loading rates and nitrate concentration. And when influent pH was about 4.7, most nitrate changed to ammonia while when influent pH was about 6.8~7.0, most nitrate denitrified independent of $COD/NO_3-N$ ratio. Most granules were gray and a few were black. In gray-colored granule, black inner side was covered with gray substance and SEM illustrated Methanoccoci type microorganisms which were compact spherical shape. Anaerobic filter removed residual COD effectively which was left in sludge bed due to the inhibition of nitrogen oxide.

  • The anaerobic fluidized bed bioreactor (AFBR) treating synthetic wastewater to simulate domestic sewage was operated under GAC fluidization to provide high surface area for biofilm formation. Although the AFBR achieves excellent COD removal efficiency due to biological activities, concerns are still made with nutrient such as nitrogen remaining in the effluent produced by AFBR. In this study, forward osmosis membrane was applied to treat the effluent produced by AFBR to investigate removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN) with respect to the draw solution (DS) such as NaCl and glucose. Permeability of FO membrane increased with increasing DS concentration. About 55% of TN removal efficiency was observed with the FO membrane using 1 M of NaCl of draw solution, but almost complete TN removal efficiency was achieved with 1 M of glucose of draw solution. During 24 h of filtration, there was no permeate flux decline with the FO membrane regardless of draw solution applied.

  • Effect of organic loading rate on UASB performance was evaluated under the renditions of some surface area/reactor volume ratio and different reactor diameter. At the low leading rate of 0.4 kg $COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, reactor performance was not affected by reactor diameter. At the organic loading rate of 6 kg $COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, however, volatile acid accumulation and low COD removal efficiency is observed in reactor having 6.4 cm diameter, while volatile acid is not accumulated at all and high COD removal efficiency is observed in reactor having 3 cm diameter. Such a difference of reactor performance depending on reactor diameter can be explained that sludge bed can be fluidized by evolved gas bubble in narrow reactor, while sludge bed ran not be fluidized by evolved gas bubble only in wide reactor. At a high organic loading rate of 20 kg $COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, it can be judged that there is no relation between reactor configuration and reactor performance because all reactors showed very low COD removal efficiencies regardless of reactor diameter. Narrow and tall type reactor is favorable condition for making sludge bed fluidization at a constant surface area/reactor volume ratio. Thus, it can be judged that reactor configuration and sludge bed fluidization have great influence to reactor performance.

  • This study was carried out to treat textile wastewater using anaerobic sludge and aerobic fixed-bed biofilm reactor immobilized with Bacillus sp. dominated activated sludge(Bacillus sp. fraction : 81.5%). The range of influent con-centration of SCOD and soluble color were 1032-1507 mg/1, and 1239-1854 degree, respectively. Continuous treatment experiments were performed with variation of textile wastewater ratio at a same HRT. When textile wastewater ratio was 100%(HRT : 24 hours), The removal efficiency of SCOD and soluble color were 88% and 78%, respectively. When compare aerobic reactor of this study that was immobilized with Bacillus sp. dominated activated sludge to other study that was immobilized with activated sludge, SCOD and soluble color removal efficiency of this study showed a little higher efficiency than immobilized with activated sludge. The Bacillus sp. fraction of initial condition was 81.5%), but the fraction after operation was decreased to 31.8%).

  • Anaerobic sewage treatment is drawing attentions due to high energy consumptions and sludge production associated with aerobic treatment. This study evaluates the treatment characteristics and energy balance of a fluidized bed reactor (FBR) for treating domestic sewage at $20^{\circ}C{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ for 245 days. Sewage fed to the FBR was a primary clarifier effluent of a domestic sewage treatment plant with COD of 99-301 mg/L and $BOD_{5}$ of 37-149 mg/L. Effluent $SBOD_{5}$ and its removal efficiency at HRT of 1~3 h were 6~15 mg/L and 73.4~85.5%, respectively, achieving high removal efficiency for soluble organic substances even at short HRTs. COD removal efficiency and its effluent concentration were 53.8~75.9% and 51~83 mg/L, respectively. The energy production potential from gaseous methane was 0.009-0.028 kWh/$m^{3}$, which satisfies the energy required for the FBR operation.
