It is well-known that the performance of turbo codes can be improved by allocating different energies per code symbol. In this paper, based on this observation, we propose a joint encoding and modulation scheme for quadrature amplitude modulated turbo code systems. In the proposed scheme, the amount of energy difference between the turbo coded symbols is optimized by optimizing the constellation of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The proposed scheme offers better coding gain compared to the conventional combination of binary turbo code and QAM at the bit error rate of 10$^{-5}$. Also, the performance of binary turbo codes with the proposed QAM constellation for various code symbol mapping strategies are verified.
Objective:Event-related potentials(ERPs) are electrical changes recorded at the surface of the scalp in response to stimulus presentation, and their latency and amplitude change according to cognitive processes. Through past studies of the auditory ERP in schizophrenia, the P300 has been reported to be statistically smaller and delayed in schizophrenia than comparison groups. However, studies of the visual ERP have not been systematically examined. The present study was designed to investigate the visual P300 in patients with schizophrenia and normal controls and to compare the pattern of P300 between them. Methods:The subjects were composed of patients(N=22) with schizophrenia by DSM-IV and normal controls(N=22). The visual ERPs were measured by the visual continuous performance test. P300 amplitude and latency measured on 5 scalp electrodes(Fz, Cz, Pz, $T_7$, $T_8$) were compared between patients and controls. Results:The P300 latencies measured on Fz, Cz, Pz, and $T_7$ electrodes were significantly longer in patients than controls(p<0.05). The P300 amplitudes in patients were smaller than controls. However, the difference between them was not statistically significant. Conclusion:Analysis of the visual ERPs showed that the P300 latency is significantly delayed and the P300 amplitude is slightly smaller in patients than controls. These results are similar to established studies of the auditory P300 in schizophrenia.
We investigated 8th grade science textbooks and their instructor's manuals treating the ideal condition for isochronism of a simple pendulum. The isochronism, i.e. the period is independent of amplitude, is satisfied only if the amplitude is very small. This is so called "ideal condition" for isochronism of a simple pendulum. Most textbooks and instructor's manuals are found not to state this ideal condition properly, which often leads to the deviation between experimental data and theoretical calculation. This difference between theoretical and experimental results makes students to create a sense of alienation from the real world and eventually keeps them away from physics. We thus study the cycloidal pendulum as an alternative method to test the isochronism regardless of amplitude and discuss the practical utility of it in class.
The purpose of this study was to identify the saddle to pedal length contributing to successful performance in kayak using a kayak ergometer. Ten male elite kayak players participated in this study. players were tested on the kayak ergometer which was varied saddle to pedal length by the knee flexion angle(90deg; 120deg; 150deg) to measure stroke frequency, paddling amplitude, joint angle, RoM and angular velocity, foot pressure and force, iEMG using the 3D motion system, foot pressure system and EMG wireless system. At a results, rowing at 120deg on knee flexion angle showed higher stroke frequency and paddling amplitude than other knee flexion angles. RoM at upper extremity showed not significant difference between knee flexion angles. But there were significant differences in thorax and pelvis rotation RoM, knee flexion-extension RoM in each condition. In addition, foot pressure, force and iEMG were significantly different in knee flexion angles. Study showed that changed of saddle to pedal length affected rowing performance kinds of stroke frequency, paddling amplitude. The most important thing, increased range of motion in pelvic and thorax has occurred by force that generated foot-bar to seat. Not only that, but it seems to be attributed to a technical adaptation developed to maximum rowing performance.

In this study, a computer program considering initial imperfection of axisymmetric reinforced concrete shell which plastic deformation by large external loading was developed . Initial imperfection of dome was assumed as 'dimple type' which can be expressed as Wi=(Wo/h)(1-x$^2$)$^3$. The developed model applied to the analysis of dynamic response of axisymmetric reinforced concrete shell when it has initial imperfection. The initial imperfection of 0.0, -5.0, and 5cm and steel and steel layer ratio 0,3, and 5% were tested for numerical examples . The results can be summarized as follows ; 1. Dynmaic response of vertical deflection at dome crown showed slow increased if it has not inital imperfection . But the response showed relatively high amplitude when initial imperfection was inner directed (opposite direction to loading). Similar trends also appeared for different steel layer ratios. 2. Dynamic responses of radial displacement at the junction of dome and wall showed the highest amplitude when initial imperfection was inward directed (opposite direction to loading). The lowest amplitude occurred when initial imperfection was outward directed (same direction to loading). Vibration period also delayed for inward directed initial imperfection . These trends were obvious as steel layer ratio increasing. 3. The effects of imperfection for the dynamic response of radial displacement a the center of wall scarely appeared. The effects of initial imperfection of dome on the dynmaic response of the wall can be neglected. 4. Effect of steel on the dynmic response of axisymmetric shell structure was great when initial imperfection did not exist. And the effect of direction of initial imperfection (inward or outward) did not show big difference.

Background: Meralgia paresthesia (MP) is characterized by sensory impairment in the anterolateral aspect of the thigh and usually caused by a lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) lesion. It is well known that several physiologic factors including age, obesity, and sex can affect nerve conduction. This study aimed to determine whether body mass index (BMI) and age can influence on the conduction velocity and action potential amplitude of the LFCN. Methods: Fifty six individuals without any previous neuromuscular disease participated in this study. LFCN was studied orthodromically, distally from the anterior superior iliac spine. The values, such as sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitude and sensory nerve conduction velocity (NCV) were obtained. SNAP of the LFCN were formed on both sides in forty three individuals. Results: No difference of demographic factors was observed between two groups divided according to the presence of SNAP formation. BMI had a significant relationship with SNAP amplitude and NCV of the LFCN. Moreover, Multiple regression analyses of nerve conduction values showed the significant correlation of body mass index and age with nerve conduction velocity. Conclusions: We may suggest that nerve conduction of the LFCN can be affected by age and BMI. Further study to obtain normal nerve conduction data and compare these data with those of meralgia paresthetica patients should be continued.
Purpose : This study was to investigate the change of accommodative functions by different color density and color of colored lenses. Methods : Participant had a normal NPC and no dyschromatopsia, phoria and eye disease, also had no histories of eye surgery in 31 students of university. Their accommodative functions were measured according to 50%, 80% density of the gray, blue, brown lens and non-colored lenses. Tests of accommodative functions performed include amplitude of accommodation, accommodative facility, relative accommodation, and accommodative lag. Results : The amplitude of accommodation and accommodation lag were increased when wearing the colored lens. Negative relative accommodation was more increased when wearing the colored lens than achromatic. Positive relative accommodation increased when wearing the blue color lens density by 50%. Also, accommodation facility increased when wearing the colored lens, but, as the density of the color increased, the accommodation facility was decreased. Conclusion : As since the accommodation function changes according to density of the colored lenses, working distance and environment of the wearing colored lens should be considered when selecting density and color of colored lenses.
Background: Only 2% of falls in older adults result in serious injuries (i.e., hip fracture). Therefore, it is important to differentiate injurious versus non-injurious falls, which is critical to develop effective interventions for injury prevention. Objects: The purpose of this study was to a. extract the best features of surface electromyography (sEMG) for classification of injurious falls, and b. find a best model provided by data mining techniques using the extracted features. Methods: Twenty young adults self-initiated falls and landed sideways. Falling trials were consisted of three initial fall directions (forward, sideways, or backward) and three knee positions at the time of hip impact (the impacting-side knee contacted the other knee ("knee together") or the mat ("knee on mat"), or neither the other knee nor the mat was contacted by the impacting-side knee ("free knee"). Falls involved "backward initial fall direction" or "free knee" were defined as "injurious falls" as suggested from previous studies. Nine features were extracted from sEMG signals of four hip muscles during a fall, including integral of absolute value (IAV), Wilson amplitude (WAMP), zero crossing (ZC), number of turns (NT), mean of amplitude (MA), root mean square (RMS), average amplitude change (AAC), difference absolute standard deviation value (DASDV). The decision tree and support vector machine (SVM) were used to classify the injurious falls. Results: For the initial fall direction, accuracy of the best model (SVM with a DASDV) was 48%. For the knee position, accuracy of the best model (SVM with an AAC) was 49%. Furthermore, there was no model that has sensitivity and specificity of 80% or greater. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the classification model built upon the sEMG features of the four hip muscles are not effective to classify injurious falls. Future studies should consider other data mining techniques with different muscles.
This paper presents three methods for ship hull form improvement on the basis of wave pattern analysis. These methods are primarily based on the assumption that a linear relation exists between the small difference of hull sections and the difference of the wave amplitude functions. The improved hull form of ship is made by superposing a thin hull form on that of a parent model. The first method use the simplification of framelines and Michell's Theory to the formula of wave resistance for superposed thin ship. The second method use tent functions and Michell's Theory to that. And the third is experimental method.

If the infinitesimal delamination exists and the two waves can hardly be distinguished from each other on account of being much closer, we cannot measure the thickness of delamination by the time difference method. On this study, we calculated the thickness of infinitesimal delamination model by means of measuring echo height due to the deflection of material particles and utilized Newton Ring for optical measurement as a delamination model. From the result of Newton Ring expressed in the delamination model, we can calculate the infinitesimal delamination thickness up to $0.2{\sim}0.3{\mu}m$ due to the difference of acoustic impedance by the ratio of the echo height to the total reflection.
