Nitrogen compounds in municipal wastewater can be divided into biodegradable and nonbiodegradable fractions with biodegradability. Biodegradable nitrogen compounds can be removed through biological nitrification and denitrification processes, and nonbiodegradable nitrogen compounds affect the effluent quality of biological nutrient removal processes. The amount of nitrifiable nitrogen compounds, which are the sum of ammonia and biodegradable organic nitrogen, has been estimated by respirometry. Respirometry shows good estimation of the concentration of nitrifiable nitrogen when a synthetic sample of ammonium chloride is dosed. The estimated concentration of nitrifiable nitrogen compounds in municipal wastewater is close to ammonia concentration in municipal wastewater, but it is lower than that for the synthetic sample. If nitrogen assimilated into cell synthesis of nitrifiers and heterotrophs is considered, the total amounts of nitrifiable nitrogen compounds, which are nitrified and assimilated, could be more accurately estimated. The concentration of nitrifiable nitrogen compounds, which are biodegradable, is about 31 mg N/l, and this is 119% of ammonia and 94% of total nitrogen. Ammonia, nitrate, biodegradable organic nitrogen, and nonbiodegradable nitrogen are about 79%, 1%, 15%, and 5% of the total nitrogen in municipal wastewater, respectively.

The flow and heat/mass transfer in the falling-film of a heat exchanger can be influenced by the motion of the surrounding refrigerant vapor. In this study, the effect of the vapor flow direction on the absorption heat transfer has been investigated for a falling-film helical coil which is frequently used as the absorber of ammonia/water absorption refrigerators. The experiments were carried out for different solution concentration. The heat and mass transfer performance was measured for both parallel and counter-current flow. The effect of vapor flow on the heat and mass transfer is found to be increased with decreasing solution concentration. In the experiments with low solution concentration, whose vapor specific volume is great, the counter-current flow of vapor resulted in uneven distribution of falling-film and reduced the heat transfer performance of the absorber. The direction of the vapor flow hardly affected the thermal performance as the solution concentration became stronger since the specific volume of the ammonia/water vapor was much smaller than that of the water vapor.
Landfill leachate constitutes one of the most polluting wastewaters. Their treatment was considered difficult due to the presence of high concentration of organic matter, ammonia, toxic organic compounds and heavy metals. Biological processes were found to be effective in several cases, but they are limited by the presence of inhibitory compounds in leachate. In this study we develop a biological process for the leachate biodetoxification using Trametes trogii (T. trogii; CLBE55). Results show that laccase activity, mycelia growth and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies varied depending on the leachate and ammonium concentration. Indeed T. trogii was able to grow in the presence of low concentration of landfill leachate of 10 and 30%. In fact, the biomass produced was 4.7 and 3.7 g/L, respectively leading to a COD removal of 66 and 53%, respectively. However, when the concentration of the introduced leachate exceeds 30%, the treatment efficiency and particularly the COD removal decreases to reach 15% at 100% leachate. The effect of the ammonia was also studied and results showed that the addition of 5 g/L of ammonia inhibited totally the production of laccase and the COD removal.
In this study, a poly(vinyl) alcohol/sodium alginate (PVA/SA) mixture was used to fabricate core-shell structured gel beads for autotrophic single-stage nitrogen removal (ASNR) using aerobic and anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AAOB and AnAOB, respectively). For stable ASNR process, the mechanical strength and oxygen penetration depth of the shell layer entrapping the AAOB are critical properties. The shell layer was constructed by an interfacial gelling reaction yielding thickness in the range of 2.01-3.63 mm, and a high PVA concentration of 12.5% resulted in the best mechanical strength of the shell layer. It was found that oxygen penetrated the shell layer at different depths depending on the PVA concentration, oxygen concentration in the bulk phase, and free ammonia concentration. The oxygen penetration depth was around $1,000{\mu}m$ when 8.0 mg/L dissolved oxygen was supplied from the bulk phase. This study reveals that the shell layer effectively protects the AnAOB from oxygen inhibition under the aerobic conditions because of the respiratory activity of the AAOB.
To investigate the effects of swelling treatment by ammonia on characteristics of carboxymethy1cellulose(CMC) and CMC solution, the domestic kraft pulp pretreated with 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% $NH_4OH$ solution, was carboxymethylated by the standard method, and then the CMC prepared was tested. The physical properties of CMC and CMC solution, such as degree of substitution, transparency. viscosity, weight increase and solubility, were measured, and the comparison with commercial domestic CMC used as a food additive was done. The results obtained were as follows; 1. In CMC manufactured by standard solvent method, hardwood bleached kraft pulp(LBKP) was more substituted than safwood bleached kraft pulp(NBKP), and viscosity of NBKP was higher than that of LBKP. 2. When ammonia swelling treatment was done, degree of substitution gradually decreased with increasing concentration of $NH_4OH$, and degree of substitution of LBKP decreased with a larger range than that of NBKP. 3. When ammonia swelling treatment was done. transparency of CMC solution from LBKP was hardly effected, but in case of NBKP gradually increased with increasing concentration of $NH_4OH$. 4. When ammonia swelling treatment was done, viscosity of CMC solution was higher than that of CMC solution without ammonia swelling treatment. Especially, CMC of high viscosity could be manufactured in 5%, 10% concentration levels of $NH_4OH$. 5. In CMC manufactured from domestic NBKP, CMC at the range of 0.40 to 0.50 in DS was dispersed easily and quickly dissolved, and CMC at more than 0.50 in DS was dispersed slowly in water solution. 6. In comparison with commercial domestic CMC used as a food additive, CMC manufactured from domestic NBKP was higher in DS, and was lower in viscosity and transparency.
The feasibility of producing sulfuric acid and ammonia water from ammonium sulfate was investigated by an integrated process including ammonia stripping (AS) and electrodialysis with bipolar membrane (EDBM). It was suggested that the production of sulfuric acid using ammonia stripping-electrodialysis with bipolar membrane (ASEDBM) was effective in obtaining high concentration of sulfuric acid compared with EDBM alone. AS was carried out over pH 11 and within the range of temperatures, $20^{\circ}C{\~}60^{\circ}C$. Sodium sulfate obtained using AS was used as the feed solution of EDBM. The recovery of ammonia increased from $40\%$ to $80\%$ at $60^{\circ}C$ due to the increased mobility of ammonium ion. A pilot-scale EDBM system, which is composed of two compartments and 10 cell pairs with an effective membrane area of $200 cm^2$ per cell, was used for the recovery of sulfuric acid. The performance was examined in the range of 0.1 M${\~}$1.0 M concentration of concentrate compartment and of $25 mA/cm^2{\~}62.5 mA/cm^2$ of current density. The maximum current efficiency of $64.9\%$ was obtained at 0.1 M sulfuric acid because the diffusion rate at the anion exchange membrane decreased as the sulfuric acid of the concentrate compartment decreased. It was possible to obtain the 2.5 M of sulfuric acid in the $62.5 mA/cm^2$ with a power consumption of 13.0 kWh/ton, while the concentration of sulfuric acid was proportional to the current density below the limiting current density (LCD). Thus, the integrating process of AS-EDBM enables to recover sulfuric acid from the wastewaters containing ammonium sulfate.

Management and control of ammonia at the sources and ambient largely depend on sampling and measurement techniques. Good sampling and measurement techniques provide high quality data. The main purpose of the study is compare the analytical characteristics of the Indolphenol method which is one of the standard method in Korea with automatic analyzers for continued measuring gaseous ammonia. For comparison with other analytical methods, the verification test was designed to evaluate performance parameters; linearity, absorption efficiency, reproducibility and repeatability test, accuracy, and response time test. $R^2$ of calibration curve using IPM and CLM was very high (value is 1.000), but for EcSM $R^2$ value was estimated to be lower than IPM and CLM (as 0.991). The RSD of the CLM ranged from 0.1 to 2.3% over the nine concentration levels measured, %Ds was 0.1 to 10.7%, and average RA over all the measurements was 3.3%. The RSD of IPM and EcSM was ranged from 1.0 to 8.1, 3.9 to 14.0 respectively, and average RA were 8.71, 4.9% respectively. Rise in response times of EcSM was estimated to be 1 minute. It is found to be more sensitive than response time (which ranged from 2 to 9 minute) of CLM. For ammonia concentration measured using the IPM and the CLM from the same ammonia source, linear regression of IPM versus CLM show a slope of 0.805, an intercept of 637 ppb, and $R^2$ of 0.868.
Mirror carp, Cyprinus carpio nudus (weight 26.2±3.1 g, length 11.8±0.5 cm) were exposed to waterborne total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) at 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 mg TAN/L. The lethal concentration 50 (LC50) of mirror carp, C. carpio nudus exposed to waterborne ammonia was 60.38 mg TAN/L. The red blood cell (RBC) count was significantly reduced by ammonia exposure, whereas there was no significant changes in the hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit value. In the plasma components, glucose, total protein, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were significantly increased by ammonia exposure. The results of this study suggest that the ammonia exposure to C. carpio nudus affects the survival rates, hematological parameters and plasma components as toxicity.

The characteristics of ammonia removal by natural neutralizer were studied by using a scrubber type equipment. As operation parameters, neutralizer dilution ratio, neutralizer inlet flowrate, air flowrate and initial ammonia concentration were selected and their effects on ammonia removal efficiency were investigated. The optimal removal effect was achieved at neutralizer dilution ratio of 1.0% and neutralizer inlet flowrate of $60m{\ell}/min$. On the other hand, with respect to air flowrate and initial ammonia concentration, there was no significant effect on removal efficiency, when loading rate was considered. In addition, ammonia removal reaction was investigated by analyzing the ammonia oxides, such as nitrites and nitrates, after reacting ammonium solution with natural neutralizer. The result shows a partial oxidation by natural neutralizer besides dominant absorption of ammonia.

Ammonia is main precursor gas of secondary particulate matter and contributes almost 78% of total ammonia emission from the agricultural sector in Korea. The current method of estimating ammonia emission from fertilizer application, which contributes 7% of the total emission, has high uncertainty and needs to be improved to better predict PM2.5 concentration. In this study, we suggest an improvement method for ammonia emission quantification from fertilizer application. The first improvement was in the emission factor of NPK fertilizer by conducting a field study to verify the currently used factor. The improved NPK emission factor of 52.2 kg NH ton-1N was confirmed by comparing with the value from the EEA (European Environment Agency) and adjusting the value for the Korean climate and soil conditions. We also improved the amount of fertilizer usage by including the sales amount to the fertilizer supply amount of the Korean Farmers Association, increasing total fertilizer usage by 39.8%. As the statistical data on fertilizer supply and sales are compiled yearly, we estimated monthly emission of ammonia by considering cultivated areas and timing of fertilization for each crop. In summary, we suggest a novel and practical method to improve estimation methodology of ammonia emission from the field of fertilizer application: 1) emission factor of NPK fertilizer was reconfirmed; 2) total amount of fertilizer use was revised considering fertilizer sales; and 3) monthly emission of ammonia was realized by considering different crop practices. A bottom-up approach to compile activity data is needed to increase the estimation accuracy of monthly emission of ammonia, which is very helpful for predicting PM2.5 concentration.
