This study was carried out to investigate the effects of curing methods on the concentration of ammonia during curing in burley tobacco leaves. The air-cured tobacco(KB108; Nicotiana tabacum L.) was grown at Chonju Tobacco Experiment Station in 1998 and the tenth leaves from the top on the stalk were harvested. Half of the harvested leaves were cured in normal air curing facility and the other leaves were cured in excessive curing facility. Stalk cut tobaccos were cured in horizontal curing facility. The leaves were sampled every five days from harvesting time to the end of curing(25 days). Ammonia concentration of leaves increased during curing period with a remarkable increase at yellowing stage. The concentration of ammonia was high in the primed cured leaves, while that of the excessive cured leaves was low. It is considered that the lower increase of ammonia in stalk cured leaves may be caused by the translocation from the leaves to the stalk during curing, while that of excessive cured leaves may be caused by the poor decomposition of protein and amino acid during curing by excessive moisture loss and high temperature condition.
Ammonia ($NH_3$) is an important pollutant that plays a key role in several air pollution problems. It can create odors and have negative impacts on animal and human health. The largest source contributing to Ammonia emission is the agricultural production, in particular animal operation, in Korea. The present study evaluated flux profiles of Ammonia emitted from the cattle housing using a dynamic flux chamber. We have developed the emission factor of Ammonia from the cow housing. Analysis of Ammonia flux variation was made with respect to manure surface temperature, pH, and ammonium concentration. Ammonia has been measured from calf and cattle housing between October and December in 2007. In the fall, average Ammonia flux from calf and cattle housing was estimated 1.342(${\pm}0.728$) and 1.323(${\pm}0.655$)mg/$m^2$/min, respectively. In the winter, average Ammonia flux was estimated 0.889(${\pm}0.362$)mg/$m^2$/min from the calf housing and 0.925(${\pm}0.511$)mg/$m^2$/min from the cattle housing. The correlation coefficient between Ammonia flux and ammonium concentration showed stronger relationship than the relationship between manure pH and temperature. In the fall, Ammonia emission factor from calf and cattle housing was estimated 4.46(${\pm}2.39$) and 6.03(${\pm}3.27$)kg-$NH_3$/animal/yr, respectively. In the winter, average Ammonia flux was estimated 2.88(${\pm}1.53$) from the calf housing and 4.24({$\pm}1.63$)kg-$NH_3$/animal/yr from the cattle housing.

Rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii (mean length $14.53{\pm}1.14cm$ and mean weight $38.36{\pm}3.45g$), were exposed for 4 weeks with the different levels of ammonia in the concentrations of 0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mg/L at 19 and $24^{\circ}C$. The indicators of growth performance such as daily length gain, daily weight gain, condition factor, and hematosomatic index were significantly reduced by the ammonia exposure and high temperature. The ammonia exposure induced a significant decrease in hematological parameters, such as red blood cell (RBC) count, white blood cell (WBC) count, hemoglobin (Hb), and hematocrit (Ht), whose trend was more remarkable at $24^{\circ}C$. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were also notably decreased by the ammonia exposure. Blood ammonia concentration was considerably increased by the ammonia concentration exposure. In the serum components, the glucose, glutamic oxalate transaminase (GOT), and glutamic pyruvate transaminase (GPT) were substantially increased by the ammonia exposure, whereas total protein was significantly decreased. But, the calcium and magnesium were not considerably changed.

In this study, the removal characteristic of ammonia nitrogen and behavior of nitrogen was investigated using Leclercia adecarboxylata, which was derived from the culture contaminated by ammonia nitrogen of high concentration. The method of ammonia nitrogen removal was not biological nitrification and denitrification but elimination of nutrient salt with internal synthesis of microorganisms which use ammonia nitrogen as substrate. L. adecarboxylata(one of ammonia synthesis microorganisms) was highly activated and showed the most high removal efficiency in free salt condition but the removal efficiency decreased badly in salt concentration of more than 4%. About 80 mg/L of $NH_3-N$ was mostly removed within 20 hours and 500 mg/L of $NH_3-N$ showed less then removal efficiency of 50% because carbon source was not enough. However, ammonium nitrogen concentration was decreased again when the carbon source was inserted additionally thus, ammonium nitrogen removal efficiency by L. adecarboxylata, was related to amount of carbon source. pH decreased from 8.0 to 6.36 according to growth of L. adecarboxylata. Concentration of nitrite nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen did not increase and TKN concentration showed no variation while ammonia nitrogen was removed by L. adecarboxylata. In addition to, when content of protein in organic nitrogen was measured, protein was not detected at the beginning of microorganism synthesis but protein of 193.1 mg/L was detected after 48 hours. Hence, ammonium nitrogen was not decomposed as nitrate nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen but synthesized by L. adecarboxylata, which has excellent ability of nitrogen synthesis and can threat ammonia nitrogen of high concentration in wastewater.
The microbial community structure and in situ spatial distribution of ammonia oxidizing and nitrite oxidizing bacteria in nitrifying biofilm of an upflow biological aerated filter system were investigated. The reactor had been continuously operated under high free ammonia concentration and low DO concentration for nitrite accumulation more than 2 years before the experiment. Civil appeals on odor from swine barn have been increasing. This study was conducted to compile basic data of odor from swine barns as civil appeals on odor have been increasing. Odor was monitored from two gestating sow barns and the boundary of those barns in Suwon and Hwaseong city from June to November, 2008. Mean ammonia concentration measured at the boundary of A piggery in Suwon city was 0.9 ppm with occasional breaks of permissible limit (1.0 ppm). Mean concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan were 0.37 ppb and 0.01 ppb, which were lower than permissible limits of 20 ppb and 2 ppb, respectively. Mean ammonia concentration was 3.22 ppm and was maintained under 5.0 ppb. Ammonia concentration had increased since November when the barns were closed. Hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan were lower than the permissible limits. Mean ammonia concentration measured at the boundary of B piggery in Hwaseong city was 16.3 ppm and steep increase of concentration was monitored after October when the barn was sealed up. Hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan were 26.66 ppb and 7.45 ppb, respectively. In appropriate ventilation and raising environment would cause high ammonia concentration in swine barns. Emitted ammonia from barns and composting facilities were mixed, which would cause higher ammonia concentration on the boundary of barns. Hence improvement of raising environment, rapid manure treatment, and correct use of microbial preparation would be needed.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate whether the ammonia nitrogen concentration of aqueous samples such as drinking water can be determined by measuring the saturation of the samples colored by indophenol method. Methods: A color saturation measurement system was constructed by connecting a notebook computer to an image acquisition device composed of a PC camera and a light source, and was then used to measure the saturation of samples colored by blue indophenol complex. Results: Between two available light sources, a fluorescent lamp was selected due to its demonstrating better linearity between color saturation and ammonia nitrogen concentration. Prediction by quadratic regression was more accurate than by linear regression, and prediction by quadratic regression in the concentration range of 0.1-1.0 $mg/l$ was more accurate than in the concentration range of 0.0-1.0 $mg/l$. Regression-based predictions over 0.25 $mg/l$, 0.55 $mg/l$ and 0.75 $mg/l$ concentrations were implemented both by spectrophotometric method and by measuring color saturation. In the case of 0.25 $mg/l$, the predicted concentration by spectrophotometric method was $0.256{\pm}0.0076\;mg/l$ and the predicted concentration by measuring color saturation was $0.246{\pm}0.0086\;mg/l$ (p=0.051). In the case of 0.55 $mg/l$, they were $0.561{\pm}0.0068\;mg/l$ and $0.564{\pm}0.0166\;mg/l$ (p=0.660). In the case of 0.75 $mg/l$, they were $0.755{\pm}0.0139\;mg/l$ and $0.762{\pm}0.0088\;mg/l$ (p=0.215). Conclusions: There were no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) between the data from the two methods in all three of the concentrations. Therefore, the color saturation measurement method proposed in this paper may be considered applicable for determining the ammonia nitrogen concentration of aqueous samples such as drinking water.
In the field of the $CO_2$ absorption process using aqueous ammonia, the effects of regeneration pressure and temperature on $CO_2$ absorption performances of the aqueous ammonia were investigated. The absorbents were prepared by dissolving ammonium carbonate solid in water to grant the resulted solution 0.5 $CO_2$ loading ($mol\;CO_2/mol\;NH_3$) and various ammonia concentration (14, 20, 26 and 32 wt%). As-prepared absorbents were regenerated at high pressure and temperature (over $120^{\circ}C$ and 6 bar) before the absorption test. The absorption test was carried out by injecting the simulated gas that contains 12 vol% of $CO_2$ into a bubbling reactor. The introduction of 26 wt% of the ammonia concentration for $CO_2$ absorption test resulted in the higher absorption capacities than other experimental conditions. In particular, when the absorbents with 26 wt% of the ammonia were regenerated at $150^{\circ}C$ and 14 bar, the highest absorption capacity, $45ml\;CO_2/g$, was obtained. According to the analysis of absorbents using acid-base titration, the ammonia loss during the regeneration of the absorbents with a fixed ammonia concentration decreased as the regeneration pressure increased, while it increased as the regeneration temperature increased. In the condition of fixed regeneration pressure and temperature, as expected, the ammonia loss increased as the ammonia concentration increased. The measured $CO_2$ loadings and ammonia concentrations of absorbents were compared to the values calculated by Electrolyte NRTL model in Aspen Plus.
According to reinforce environmental regulations, coal power plants have used selective catalytic reduction using ammonia as a reducing agent to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxide generation. The purpose of the present study was to derive a mixing device for effectively mixing dilute air and ammonia in the ammonia mixing pipe by performing computational fluid dynamic analysis. The mixing effect was compared by analysing the %RMS of ammonia concentration at the down stream cross section in the mixing pipe and the 16 outlets based on the case 1-1 shape, which is an existing mixing pipe without a mixing device. The mixing device was performed by changing the positions of a square plate on the downstream side of the ammonia supply pipe and an arc-shaped plate on the wall of the mixing pipe. In the case of the existing geometry(Case 1-1), the %RMS of ammonia concentration at the 16 outlets was 29.50%. The shape of the mixing device for Case 3-2 had a square plate on the downstream side of the ammonia supply pipe and an arc plate was installed adjacent to it. The %RMS of ammonia concentration for Case 3-2 was 2.08% at 16 outlets and it could be seen that the shape of Case 3-2 was the most effective mixing shape for ammonia mixing.

Titration method is one of the widely used methods for the concentration measurement of absorbent ammonia/water. However, this method is inconvenient because the solution should be extracted for the measurement. Moreover, significant error can be introduced by the evaporation of ammonia during the sampling and measuring procedure. In this study a reliable in-line concentration measurement method was proposed. To prove the validity of the concept, a measuring apparatus was designed, built, and tested with water. It is found that the location of flow inlet and exit is important in the measurement accuracy. The flow inlet and exit located in the middle of the test cell showed the best result. By the error analysis, it is expected that the ammonia concentration can be measured within the error of $\pm$0.18% assuming the error of 0.1 K in temperature measurement and 0.1 g in weight measurement.
