Autopilot Design for a Target Drone using Rate Gyros and GPS

  • Cost is an important aspect in designing a target drone, however the poor performance of low cost IMU, GPS, and microcontrollers prevents the use of complex algorithms, such as ARS, or INS/GPS to estimate attitude angles. We propose an autopilot which uses rate gyro and GPS only for a target drone to follow a prescribed path for anti-aircraft training. The autopilot consists of an altitude hold, roll hold, and path following controller. The altitude hold controller uses vertical speed output from a GPS to improve phugoid damping. The roll hold controller feeds back yaw rate after filtering the dutch roll oscillation to estimate the roll angle. The path following controller operates as an outer loop of the altitude and roll hold controllers. A 6-DOF simulation showed that the proposed autopilot guides the target drone to follow a prescribed path well from the view point of anti-aircraft gun training.

Optimization of shielding to reduce cosmic radiation damage to packaged semiconductors during air transport using Monte Carlo simulation

  • Background: Cosmic ray-induced particles can lead to failure of semiconductors packaged for export during air transport. This work performed MCNP 6.2 simulations to optimize shielding against neutrons and protons induced by cosmic radiation Methods and materials: The energy spectra of protons and neutrons by incident angle at the flight altitude were determined using atmospheric cuboid model. Various candidates for the shielding materials and the geometry of the Unit Load Device Container were evaluated to determine the conditions that allow optimal shielding at all sides of the container. Results: It was found that neutrons and protons, at the flight altitude, generally travel with a downward trajectory especially for the particles with high energy. This indicated that the largest number of particles struck the top of the container. Furthermore, the simulation results showed that, among the materials tested, borated polyethylene and stainless steel were the most optimal shielding materials. The optimal shielding structure was also determined with the weight limit of the container in consideration. Conclusions: Under the determined optimal shielding conditions, a significantly reduced number of neutrons and protons reach the contents inside the container, which ultimately reduces the possibility of semiconductor failure during air transport.

  • Modem version of supersonic jet fighter aircraft must have been guaranteed appropriate controllability and stability in HAoA(High Angle of Attack). The HAoA flight control law have two parts, one is control law of departure prevention and the other is control law of departure recovery support. The control laws of departure prevention for advanced jet trainer consist of HAoA limiter, roll command limiter and rudder fader. The control laws of departure recovery support are consist of yaw-rate limiter and MPO(Manual Pitch Override) mode. The guideline of pitch rocking using MPO mode is simple, but operating skill of pitch rocking is very difficult by the pilot with inexperience of departure situation. Therefore, automatic deep stall recovery system is necessary. The system called the "Automatic Pitch Rocker System" or APRS, provided a pilot initiated automatic maneuver capable of an aircraft recoveries in situations of deep stall, speed and altitude. This paper addresses the design and validation for APRS to recovery of an deep stall without manual pitch rocking by the pilot. Also, this system is designed to recovery of speed, attitude and altitude after deep stall recovery using ATCS (Automatic Thrust Control System) and autopilot. Finally, this system is verified by real-time pilot evaluation using HQS (Handling Quality Simulator).

  • 'Visual segment surface' means a surface that extends from the missed approach point of non precision approaches (or the decision altitude location for approaches with vertical guidance and precision approaches) to the threshold to facilitate the identification of and protection from obstacles in this visual segment of the approach. Validation is the necessary final quality assurance step in the procedure design process, prior to publication. The purpose of validation is the verification of all obstacle and navigation data, and assessment of flyability of the procedure. This paper shows how to apply the protection for the visual segment of the approach procedure, and the results of the validation for visual segment surface conducted at an airport.

  • This paper describes numerical efforts to investigate combustion characteristics of HyShot scramjet combustor, where gaseous hydrogen is transversely injected into a supersonic cross flow. The corresponding altitude, angle of attack, and equivalence ratio are 35-23 km, $0^{\circ}$, and 0.426 respectively. Two-dimensional simulation reasonably predicts combustor inner pressure distribution and reveals periodic combustion characteristics of HyShot scramjet combustor. Altitude effects are also investigated and the strength of flow instability and subsonic boundary layer thickness affect the combustion efficiency according to altitudes. Frequency analyses provide the flow instability effects on the turbulent combustion in HyShot scramjet combustor.

  • This paper deals with a design of nonlinear glide slope capture logic using dynamic model inversion in singular perturbation, which is applicable to the autolanding in ILS. Aircraft dynamics are separated into the fast time-scale variables, related with the inner-loop design, and the slow time-scale variables, related with the outer-loop design. It is assumed that the aircraft starts landing at 1000ft of altitude, -2.5deg of flight path angle, and 250ft/sec of velocity. In the outer-loop design, commands of altitude and velocity are selected and thereby the pseudo-controls of power level and pitch rate are determined. Also the elevator input to the aircraft is determined in the inner-loop design. The feasible constant speed helical trajectories for propeller driven airplanes

  • The motion of propeller driven airplanes, flying at constant speed on ascending or descending helical trajectories is analyzed. The dynamical abilities of the airplane are shown to result in restrictions on the ranges of the geometrical parameters of the helical path. The physical quantities taken into account are the variation of air density with altitude, the airplane mass change due to fuel consumption, its load factor, its lift coefficient, and the thrust its engine can produce. Formulas are provided for determining all the airplane dynamical parameters on the trajectory. A procedure is proposed for the construction of tables from which the flyability of trajectories at a given angle of inclination and radius can be read, with the corresponding minimum and maximum speeds allowed, the final altitude reached and the amount of fuel burned. Sample calculations are shown for the Cessna 182, a Silver Fox like unmanned aerial vehicle, and the C-130 Hercules.

  • Radiative heating of a liquid rocket base plane due to plume emission is numerically investigated. Calculation of flow and temperature fields around rocket nozzle precedes and thereby realistic plume shape and temperature distribution inside the plume are obtained. Based on the calculated temperature field, radiative transfer equation is solved by discrete ordinate method. The averaged radiative heat flux reaching the base plane is about $5kW/m^2$ at the flight altitude of 10.9km. This value is small compared with radiative heat flux caused by constant-temperature (1500K) plume emission, but it is not negligibly small. At higher altitude (29.8km), view factor between the babe plane and the exhaust plume is increased due to the increased expansion angle of the plume. Nevertheless, the radiative heating disappears since the base plane is heated to high temperature (above 1000K) due to convective heat transfer.

An Airborne Cycloidal Wind Turbine Mounted Using a Tethered Balloon

  • This study proposes a design for an airborne wind turbine generator. The proposed system comprises a cycloidal wind turbine adopting a cycloidal rotor blade system that is used at a high altitude. The turbine is mounted on a tethered balloon. The proposed system is relatively easier to be realized and stable. Moreover, the rotor efficiency is high, which can be adjusted using the blade pitch angle variation. In addition, the rotor is well adapted to the wind-flow direction change. This article proves the feasibility of the proposed system through a sample design for a wind turbine that produces a power of 30 kW. The generated wind power at 500 m height is nearly 3 times of that on the ground.
