  • To increase the luminance and luminous efficacy in the discharge for alternating current plasma display panel (ac PDP), the increment of Xe contents and long discharge gap are necessary. However, the driving voltage and the cost of driving circuit increases in the high Xe contents and long discharge path condition. In this paper, a long gap ITO hump electrode (LGH) model for discharge cells of ac PDP is evaluated in the various Xe contents($5{\sim}20%$). The discharge voltage of LGH structure is lower about 30V than that of ITa reference structure with same main discharge gap. The LGH structure has lower power consumption and higher luminance than those of reference structure, respectively. Also, the luminous efficacy of LGH structure is higher about 20% than that of ITO reference structure in the 20% Xe contents.

  • This paper describes the motion characteristics and micro-discharge of the free conducting particles between plain electrodes under alternating voltage. The particles move between both electrodes due to electrostatic force by applied AC voltage. Various types and sizes of free conducting particles were used to study the motion and micro-discharge characteristics. The micro-discharge and breakdown were observed during the particle motion.

  • Detection and localization of partial discharge are considered critical techniques for estimating the lifetimes of power cables. High-frequency current transformers (HFCTs) are commonly used for the detection of partial discharge in high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) power cables; however, their applicability is compromised by the limitations of the installation locations. HFCTs are typically installed in cable terminals or insulation joint boxes because HVACs induce strong time-varying magnetic fields around the cables, saturating the ferromagnetic materials in the HFCTs. Therefore, partial discharges near the installation locations can be detected. In this study, the feasibility of partial discharge detection using a HFCT was investigated for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables. We demonstrated that the HFCT could be installed at any location in the HVDC power cable to monitor partial discharge along the entire cable length. Furthermore, we showed that the HFCT could detect the location of partial discharge with high accuracy.

  • The spatio-temporal variation of Infra Red(IR) emission images were obtained from a real 3-dimensional discharge space of a surface discharge type, alternating current plasma display panel(AC PDP) cell with the Ne-Xe(4%) 400Torr gas mixture. IR emissions were observed in each period of the ADS(Address and Display Separation) driving scheme with ramp initializing waveform using an images intensified charge coupled device(ICCD) camera. The roles of each electrode were identified and it was compared with the results of the discharge simulation and of the wall charge distributions measured by the electro-optic technique.

  • The paper considers the relation between on-line monitoring and diagnostics on the one hand and high-voltage (HV) withstand and partial discharge (PD) on-site testing on the other. HV testing supplies the basic data (fingerprints) for diagnostics. In case of warnings by on-line diagnostic systems, off-line withstand and PD testing delivers the best possible information about defects and enables the classification of the risk. Because alternating voltage (AC) is the most important test voltage, the AC generation on site is considered. Frequency tuned resonant (ACRF) test systems are best adapted to on-site conditions. They can be simply combined with PD measuring equipment. The available ACRF test systems and their application to electric power equipment -from cable systems to power transformers - is described.

  • We have investigated the electro-optical characteristics of image sticking in AC PDP. Although Image sticking is one of major factors to determine display quality in AC PDP, so far, it has not being reported why it is occurred and how we can prevent it. In this experiment, we have analyzed the effect of MgO protective layer and phosphor on the image sticking and we have measured the difference of firing voltage, brightness and discharge current between sticking image and normal image in AC PDP. As a result, Phosphor degradation is a more major factor than MgO protective layer and the firing voltage of gas discharge in sticking image is higher than that of normal discharge.

  • To investigate the discharge dynamics of alternating current plasma display panel (ACPDP), we measured the spatio-temporally resolved VUV and IR emission by an intensified charge coupled device (CCD). The breakdown beings around the anode inner edge and moves towards the cathode surface. As the ionization intensifies in front of the cathode surface, another emission region appears on the anode surface. While the anode side emission does not move but grows, the cathode side emission moves out and spreads over the entire cathode surface. The discharge dynamics emission by a 2 dimensional numerical simulation suggests that a cathode-directed streamer formation play an important role.

  • The electro-optical characteristics of several functional layers over the MgO protective layer were studied during the continuous discharge of an AC-PDP. In order to observe the degradation of each functional layer on the MgO protection layer, we measured the surface morphology, cathodoluminescence (CL) spectrum, the secondary electron emission coefficient (${\gamma}$) and the discharge characteristics after 500 hours of discharge during the operation of the AC-PDP.

  • We have compared 2-D and 3-D fluid simulation results of alternating current plasma display panel (AC-PDP) cell with experimentally measured two kinds of excited Xe species $Xe^{\ast}(^{3}P_{1})$ and $Xe^{\ast}(^{3}P_{2})$ characteristics. Although direct experimental access and diagnostics of the discharge in a PDP cell is problematic due to the small cell size, some of experimental technologies have made it possible to diagnose the behavior of excited Xe species [1, 2]. The simulation shows the similar characteristics to the experimental results in the excited Xe species density distribution and the number of excited Xe atoms in anode and cathode region. In certain cases, we obtained the arch-shaped discharge path between two sustain electrodes due to the additional pulse applied to address electrode analogous to experiment. This long path discharge induced higher luminous and discharge efficiency compared to the standard case.

  • We investigated the effect of graphite electrode geometry and combination on nanocarbon material synthesis using underwater discharge plasma(UDP). The UDP system consists of two graphite electrodes and beaker filled with de-ionized water. A high voltage of 15 kV with a frequency of 25 kHz is applied to produce UDP using an alternating-current power source. The UDP system with conical electrodes produced the largest amount of products due to the concentration of electrical fields between electrodes. In addition, hollow-shaped stationary electrode and conical-shaped moving electrode stores discharge-induced bubbles and maintains longer reaction time. We found from Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy that high quality carbon nanomaterials including carbon nanotubes are synthesized by the UDP system.
