  • Surface oxides and intergranular (IG) oxidation phenomena in Alloy 600 depending on hydrogen concentration were characterized to obtain clear insight into the primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) behavior upon exposure to pressurized water reactor primary water. When hydrogen concentration was between 5 and 30 cm3 H2/kg H2O, NiFe2O4 and NiO type oxides were found on the surface. NiO type oxides were found inside the oxidized grain boundary when hydrogen concentration was 5 cm3 H2/kg H2O. However, only NiFe2O4 spinel on the surface and Ni enrichment were observed when hydrogen concentration was 30 cm3 H2/kg H2O. These results indicate that the oxidation/reduction reaction of Ni in Alloy 600 depending on hydrogen concentration can considerably affect surface oxidation behavior. It appears that the formation of NiO type oxides in a Ni oxidation state and Ni enrichment in a Ni reduction (or metallic) state are common in primary water. It is believed that the above different oxidation/reduction reactions of Ni in Alloy 600 depending on hydrogen concentration can also significantly affect the resistance to PWSCC of Alloy 600.

  • Alloy 690 tubing has been shown to be highly resistant to primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC). Nevertheless, predicting the failure by PWSCC in Alloy 690 SG tubes is indispensable. In this work, a Bayesian-based statistical approach is proposed to predict the occurrence of failure by PWSCC in Alloy 690 SG tubing. The prior distributions of the model parameters are developed based on the prior knowledge or information regarding the parameters. Since Alloy 690 is a replacement for Alloy 600, the parameter distributions of Alloy 600 tubing are used to gain prior information about the parameters of Alloy 690 tubing. In addition to estimating the model parameters, analysis of tubing reliability is also performed. Since no PWSCC has been observed in Alloy 690 tubing, only right-censored free-failure life of the tubing are available. Apparently the inference is sensitive to the choice of prior distribution when only right-censored data exist. Thus, one must be careful in choosing the prior distributions for the model parameters. It is found that the use of non-informative prior distribution yields unsatisfactory results, and strongly informative prior distribution will greatly influence the inference, especially when it is considerably optimistic relative to the observed data.

  • The stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of Alloy 600 MA, Alloy 600 TT, Alloy 800, and Alloy 690 TT were investigated in a deaerated 0.01 M solution of sodium tetrathionate using reverse u-bend test samples at $340^{\circ}C$. The results showed that SCC occurred in all alloys, excluding Alloy 690 TT. The SCC susceptibility decreased with an increase in the chromium content of the alloys. The results of the deposits and spectra taken from an energy dispersive X-ray system confirmed the existence of a reduced sulfur causing SCC.

  • KAERI(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) has developed a repassivation rate test system which can be operated at $300^{\circ}C$. It consists of an autoclave, three electrodes for an electrochemical test and a diamond scratch tip. All the electrodes are electrically insulated from the autoclave by using high temperature fittings. Reproducible repassivation curves of alloy 600 at 300 C were obtained. Repassivation rate of alloy 600 at pH 13 was slower than that of pH 10. Stress corrosion cracking test was carried as a function of the pH at a high temperature. At pH 10, alloy 600 showed a severe stress corrosion cracking(SCC), whereas it did not show a SCC at pH 7. From the viewpoint of a relationship between the current density and the charge density, a big difference was observed in the two solutions; the slope of pH 13 was steeper than that of pH 10. So the stress corrosion susceptibility at pH 13 seems to be higher than that of pH 10. The system would be a good tool to evaluate the SCC susceptibility of alloy 600 at a high temperature.

  • Immersion tests of Alloy 600 were conducted in simulated primary water environments of a pressurized water reactor at 325 ℃ for 10, 100, and 1000 h to obtain insight into effects of surface deformation on internal and intergranular (IG) oxidation behavior through precise characterization using various microscopic equipment. Oxidized samples after immersion tests were covered with polyhedral and filamentous oxides. It was found that oxides were abundant in mechanically ground (MG) samples the most. The number density of surface oxides increased with time irrespective of the method of surface finish. IG oxidation occurred in mechanically polished (MP) and chemically polished (CP) samples with thin internal oxidation layers. However, IG oxidation was suppressed with relatively thick internal oxidation layers in MG samples compared to MP and CP samples, suggesting that MG treatment could increase resistance to primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) from the standpoint of IG oxidation. As a result, appropriate surface treatment for Alloy 600 could prevent oxygen diffusion into grain boundaries, inhibit IG oxidation, and finally induce its high PWSCC resistance.

  • Bond strength of four different cements to dental casting alloys which were treated with #600 emery, tin-plating, and $50{\mu}m$ sandblasting were evaluated. The alloy specimens were Type III Gold alloy(Degulor C), Palladium-Silver alloy(Pors on 4), Nickel-Chromium(Rexillium III) alloy, which were embedded in acrylic resin disc. The specimens were treated with #600 emery and tin plating, #600 emery and sandblasting, then bonded using Fuji I, Ketac Cem(Glass ionomer cements), Poly F, Livcarbo(Polycarboxylate cements). The specimens were immersed in water for 24 hours and shear bond strengths were evaluated by Instron Machine. Tin plated, sandblasted, and debonded alloy surfaces were observed using scanning electron microscope. On the basis of this study, the following conclusions could be drawn. 1. In the tin plated alloy group, increase in bond strength of glass ionomer cements was statistically insignificant. 2. In the tin plated alloy group, increase in bond strength of polycarboxylate cements was statistically significant, except nickel-chromium alloy. 3. Sandblasted alloy group showed higher bond strength than that of tin-plated alloy group.

  • A Study on microstructural changes of sensitized Alloy 600 which was rapidly solidified by a $CO_2$ laser beam was conducted using microscopic equipments such as SEM and TEM. Dissolution of Cr-rich carbides and resultant Cr recovery on the grain boundaries occurred in the heat affected zone (HZA). The microstructure of the laser melted zone (LMZ) having epitaxially solidified from the HAZ was mainly celluar-dendritic with the 〈100〉 crystallographic direction of growth. The Cr concentration was observed to increase along the cell bondaries, and tiny particles were distributed along the cell walls with tangled dislocations around them. Cr-rich carbides had been completely melted by the high density of a laser beam, and were not re-precipitated during the matrix solidification due to a fast cooling rate in the LMZ.

  • IGSCC(Intergranular stress corrosion cracking) behaviors of Alloy 600 were studied by the electrchemical ten methods of controlling specimens electrode potentials in the active-passive transition region of anodic polarization curve. Anodic polarization and static potential tests of stressed C-ring type MA Alloy 600 were carried out in 10% NaOH at 300 $^{\circ}C$ for 7days. It was confirmed that IGSCC of Alloy 600 was accellerated by maintaining the specimen potential in the susceptible active-passive transition region of anodic polarization curve. An intergranular crack was initiated on the surface area of C-ring specimens where protective oxide layer was broken down. And the depth of the crack growth was about 100 ${\mu}$m during the testing periods.
