  • In order to set up structural improvement strategy against meteorological disasters of the shading structures in ginseng fields, structural safety analyses as well as some case studies of structural damage patterns were carried out. According to the results of structural safety analysis, allowable safe snow depth for type B(wood frame with single span) was 25.9 cm, and those for type A(wood frame with multi span) and type C and D (steel frame with multi span) were 17.6 cm, 25.8 cm, and 20.0 cm respectively. So types of shading structures should be selected according to the regional design snow depth. An experiential example study on meteorological disasters indicated that a strong wind damage was experienced once every 20 years, and a heavy snow damage once every 9.5 years. The most serious disasters were caused by heavy snow and it was found that a half break and complete collapse of structures were experienced by about 70% of snow damage. In addition to maintenance, repair and reinforcement, it is also recommended that improved model of shading structures for ginseng cultivation should be developed as a long term countermeasures against meteorological disasters.

  • This paper is to provide the allowable limit blasting-induced vibration for road structures and facilities. For this purpose, first of all, this study examined various allowable limits of different structures from domestic and foreign countries, investigated related problems of the limits used in the country, and suggested the measures to minimize the related problems. Furthermore, this study proposed the blasting-induced vibration limit of road structures and facilities that could be used in the country from comparing and analyzing the various limits from foreign countries. To verify the proposed limit for a practical use in the field, field cases that had both a vibration magnitude and a damage level were collected and they were compared with the proposed limit. In addition, the proposed limit was also compared with the results of analytical and numerical analyses. The comparison and analysis indicated that the proposed limit of different road structures and facilities is valid for the practical use in the field. From this study, the proposed limit is expected to be used as the limit to estimate the damage levels of road structures and facilities due to blasting-induced vibrations in the field.

  • Concrete is deformed by load and subjected to micro damage under allowable deformation because of non-homogeneous property. When micro damage is accumulated, it is cracked and finally fractured. Characterization of AE can be demonstrated the micro damage which it is not discovered from visual observation, and it become known to an advantage that was clearly discriminated from the existing NDT method. This study was carried out the analysis and evaluation of concrete damage by acoustic emission technique. As a results of damage analysis, it was found out that the more concrete strength has increased, the more concrete has subjected to micro damage at lower stress ratio for chylinder specimen, and this is possible only AE method which could be described the brittle properties. Also it was revealed that the kaiser effect and felicity effect were existed in reinforced concrete bending specimens and it is found out that the onset of interface debonding between concrete and steel could be conformed in comparison with felicity ratio, AE activity and load history. From the results of this study, it was conformed that the deteriorative degree of reinforced concrete structure should be evaluated using felicity ratios.

  • This study investigates structural durability through the analyses of stress, fatigue life and vibration damage at bike carrier basket. As model 2 has less stress and deformation than model 1 on static structural analysis, model 2 becomes more durable than model 1. Among the cases of nonuniform fatigue loads, 'SAE bracket history' with the severest change of load becomes most unstable but 'Sample history' becomes most stable. The amplitude deformations become highest at maximum response frequency of 2400Hz in cases of models 1 and 2. As the values of maximum equivalent stresses become within the allowable material stresses at two holes at the upper parts on models 1 and 2, these models become safe. The structural result of this study can be effectively utilized with the design of bike carrier basket by investigating prevention and durability against fatigue or vibration damage.

  • It is well known that pipelines have the highest capacity and are the safest and least environmentally disruptive form of transporting oil and gas. However, pipeline damages caused by both internal and external corrosion is a major concern threatening the reliability of oil and gas transportation and the soundness of pipeline structure. In this study, we estimated the expected allowable damage defect by comparing the ASTM B31G code which has been developed as the evaluation method of reliability and incident prevention of damaged pipelines based on the amount of loss due to corrosion and the yield strength of materials to a modified theory considering diverse detailed corrosional forms. Furthermore, we suggested the method that estimates the expected life span of used pipelines by utilizing the reliability method based on major variables such as, the depth and length of damage and corrosional rate affecting the life expectancy of pipelines.

  • Performed fatigue strength analysis for Hub to get the targeted service life of 20 years. ANSYS is used to analysis. The major structure of bearing which connect the hub and blades is modeled using the element of LINK10. To represent the stiffness of LINK10 element, initial strain and diameter of LINK10 element is applied. Prior to calculating the fatigue damages, the influence matrix is extracted from the unit loads. The target service life of 20 years is achieved from the Analysis results.

  • The damage caused in the processes and distributions after harvesting the fruits and vegetables is attributed to the mechanical factors such as compressive and impact forces. Compression tests of biological materials provide an objective method for determining the apparent modulus of elasticity and mechanical properties which are significant in quality evaluation and control, and them maximum allowable compressive forces for minimizing mechanical damage. This study was performed to determine the mechanical properties of apple and pear, and to investigate effect of specimen shapes on the mechanical properties of them. A computer program was developed for measuring the mechanical properties and analyzing the data obtained from the measurement. Compression tests on the sample were performed with then replications at each treatment and at 25 mm/min loading rate. Mechanical properties of the apple was generally shown the higher value than those of the pear, and it was though that data obtained form the cylindrical specimen removed from the sample was more reliable than from the specimen cut in half.

  • The center pivot in the power car of KTX carries the traction force of the motor bogie to the carbody. The damage to the center pivot due to failure of swivel joint causes a serious hazard of the train. To prevent the hazard, information on the relative motion between bogie and carbody is necessary. In this paper, a method to measure the relative rotation of the center pivot is proposed and an actual test to verify the method and safety is conducted. The test results show that the rotation of the center pivot is within the allowable limit and the damage due to the relative motion doesn't take place.

  • For fatigue analsis of offshore structures, existing methods have been reviewed and a computer code has been developed on PC. As methods to estimate the probabillity distribution of the fatigue stress, three methods(the deterministic method, the stochastic method, and the simplified method) are used in this code, to choose the appropriate method according to the situations. This code estimates damage ratios, fatigue lives, and probabilities of fatigue failure considering scatterness of SN-data, based on linear damage rule and SN-curves. Also, allowable stress for the design extreme wave can calculated by the simplified method.
