  • Marine benthic flora was investigated in an Arctic bay. Specimens of chlorophyte, phaeophyte, and rhodophyte were collected and examined over the period from July to August 2003 from Kongsfjorden Spitsbergen in Svalbard Islands. A total of 28 genera and 32 species (5 chlorophytes, 18 phaeophytes, and 9 rhodophytes) was identified and described. A green alga Enteromorpha linza(Linnaeus) J. Agardh, a brown alga Asperococcus compresus Griffiths ex Hooker, and three red algae Gracilaria gracilis (Stackhouse) Steentoft et al., Rhodymenia pacifica Kylin and Schizochlaenion rhodotrichum Wynne et Norris were recorded in Svalbard Islands for the first time.

  • We investigated high light-induced alterations in antioxidant enzymes by exposing green vegetative cells of the alga Haematococcus pluvialis to excess irradiance to induce the production of astaxanthin, a carotenoid pigment. Total activity of catalase decreased approximately 70% after high light exposure, whereas glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity was slightly enhanced. Total activity of superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) also slightly decreased. Overall, we did not observe dramatically elevated levels of antioxidant isozymes, although APXn, GPX2, and GPX3 isozyme increased slightly. ${H_2}{O_2}$ content increased about sixfold after high light exposure, demonstrating severe cellular oxidative stress, whereas lipid peroxidation was notably reduced. Concomitantly, astaxanthin accumulation increased about sevenfold. This result suggests that probably massively accumulated astaxanthin may be one of the antioxidant protector against high light stress.

  • Dichloromethane, ethanol, and boiling water extracts of the brown alga Ecklonia cava were examined in vivo for their antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory activities in mice. These activities were evaluated by yeast-induced pyrexia, tail-flick test, and phorbol myristate acetate-induced inflammation (edema, erythema, and blood flow). Ethanol extract of E. cava (0.4 mg/ear) inhibited the inflammatory symptoms of mouse ear edema, erythema, and blood flow by 82.6%, 69.0%, and 65.4%, respectively. This extract also demonstrated potent analgesic activity. No acute toxicity was observed after p.o. administration of each extract (5 g/kg bw). These in vivo data are in agreement with the claims of the health care industry and indigenous medicine that E. cava is an effective remedy for inflammation-related symptoms.

  • Two known farnesylacetone derivatives (1 and 2) were isolated from the Korean brown alga Sargassum sagamianum off Jeju Island, Korea. Compounds 1 and 2 were identified as (5E,10Z)-6, 10, 14-trimethylpentadeca-5, 10-dien-2, 12-dione and (5E,9E,13E)-6, 10,4-trimethylpentadeca-5,9,13-trien-2,12-dione, respectively, by comparison with the literature data. Compounds 1 and 2 showed moderate acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activities with $IC_{50}$ values of 65.0∼48.0 and 34.0∼23.0 $\muM$, respectively.

  • Morphological and molecular information of two marine algae collected from Korea is given. One belonging to a green alga, is characterized by small size up to 4 cm high, much branched thalli on all sides, slender and linear branchlets which is constricted near base, axes without prominent branch scars, chloroplasts with a prominent central pyrenoid. The other, as a brown alga, is distinct from other Korean species in having cylindrical elevated projections at all parts of thallus axis, leaves with slightly serrulate margin together with distinct midrib bearing spines and absence to rarely occurred vesicles. In phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequences, these two species are nested in the same clade with Bryopsis triploramosa and Sargassum polyporum, respectively. In this study, these two species are newly recorded in the Korean marine algal flora based on the morphological and molecular data.

  • Investigation of the chloroform soluble fraction of the red alga Liagora farinosa, collected from Hurghada at the Red Sea resulted in the isolation of three compounds; a nucleoside (thymidine) and two glycosides (methyl-${\beta}$-D-xylopyranoside and glycerol-2-${\alpha}$-D-glucopyranoside). The structures of the isolated compounds were established on the basis of different spectroscopic techniques as well as comparison with the previously published data. This is the first report for the isolation of the three compounds fron red algae; moreover, the compounds were examined for their antioxidant activity and showed variable activity.

  • Both sexes of a new species of Miraciidae belonging to the genus Amonardia Lang, 1948 are described. All materials collected from the cultivated brown alga, Undaria pinnatifida of Gijang, Korea. So far only one species, A. normani (Brady, 1872) from the algal bed at Jindo Island was recorded in Korea. The new species can easily be distinguished from its congeners by the combination of characters as follows: (1) shape of first antennular segment in female, (2) setal formular of mandible and maxillule, (3) setae of female sixth leg in female, and (4) shape of P2 endopod and exopod of fifth leg in male.

  • In the course of search for various bioactive compounds from marine algae, we found strong antioxidant activity of the methanolic extract of the brown alga G. elliptica. Chromatographic purification [ODS flash, gel-filtration on Sephadex LH-20, HPLC] of the BuOH layer of the methanolic extract afforded two known polyphenolic compounds, 6,6'-bieckol (1) and dieckol (2). Compound 1 showed acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) inhibitory activities, free radical scavenging activity on DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydazyl) with IC$\_$50/ values of 91.2, 45.6 and 15.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$, respectively. • In continuing search for bioactive compounds from Korean marine algae, we found cholinesterase-inhibitory activity in the methanolic extract of brown alga Sargassum sagamianum. After partitioning between CHCl$_3$ and 30% MeOH, the former layer was purified by a series of ODS flash, silica column, gel-filtration on Sephadex LH-20, and HPLC to give two farnesylacetone derivatives. Their structures were identified by comparison with the literature data. Compounds 1 and 2 showed moderate acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activities with IC$\sub$50/ values of 65.0∼48.0 ${\mu}$M and 34.0∼23.0 ${\mu}$M, respectively. (omitted)
