  • The technology of AC solenoid valves is now considered as a core technology in the fields of the production line of semi-conductor chips and the micro fluid chips for medical applications. And AC solenoid valves, which operate by compressed air, are characterized by high speed response, great repeatability and that the pressure on the cross sectional area of poppet is kept constant regardless of the fluctuation of the pressure exerted on the ports. In this study, AC solenoid valves that posses the high-speed responsibility and the high rate of flow have designed and analyzed through the law of equivalent magnetic circuit and Finite Element Method (FEM) respectively. In case of poppet, Flow field characteristic was analyzed by the variation of poppet and it was able to display flow field by changing the location of the poppet. Also, we verified possibility of the design through the static and dynamic pressure and the 3D distribution curve of the force by working the front poppet.

  • It is becoming more significant to develop a rotary VCM type actuator for small form factor ODD, as portables are getting more and more popularized nowadays. In this paper, the procedure of development of the actuator which is applicable to compact flash II card and is fit in the specification of BD 1X is explained. This is based on the rotary VCM type actuator, which is good for reducing thickness. Air core solenoid coil is used in order to do focusing mechanism. And the total weight is reduced by using the structure of steel-aluminium-steel triple layer, so, the stiffness is still adequate. Additionally, the tracking coil is moved next to the actuator, so the total length was reduced, then the actuator become applicable to compact flash II card. The force of Magnetic Circuit is improved by using Magnetic Circuit DOE. And flexible mode frequency improved through the DOE of structure part. Modeling was exactly done in consideration of air core solenoid coil and pivot bearing. It is confirmed that the designed model is satisfied with the specification of BD 1X and is applicable to Compact Flash II card.

  • In this study, the electromagnetic characteristics of a flat-type two-dimensional proportional solenoid were analyzed by the magnetic reluctance method. The equivalent magnetic circuit equation for the solenoid was derived by modeling the reluctance of air gaps and magnetic structural components such as pole core, armature and yoke. It was solved iteratively because of the nonlinear magnetization properties of the iron parts. The solutions showed good agreement with experimental data. Based on the equivalent magnetic circuit equation, the influence of design parameters on the force-to-armature displacement curves was mathematically derived and experimentally verified. In this way, dominant design parameters could be analytically determined.

  • Recently, the on-off solenoid valves have been focused on core technology in the fields of the production line of semi-conductor chips and the micro fluid chips for bio-medical applications. A key characteristics for on-off solenoid valve, operated by compressed air, are high speed response and great repeatability. Indeed, it is also important to keep the pressure on the cross-sectional area of the poppet to be constant regardless of the fluctuation of the pressure exerted on the ports. In this study, we have designed and analysed the high-speed and high flow rate on-off solenoid valve using the analogy of equivalent magnetic circuit and Finite Element Method (FEM) respectively. • In this paper, mechanism design of optical pickup actuator for fast access is proposed. This actuator is composed of moving magnet type actuator and moving coil type actuator for tracking and fine motion, respectively. Moving magnet type tracking actuator is configurated by two permanent magnets and four air-core solenoids. Additional damper by induced current in tracking actuator can reduce the transient vibration between the coarse seeking servo and fine seeking servo. Variable stiffness can be acquired by applying current to air-core solenoid simply. This actuator can achieve fast access by these additional damper and stiffness. Performance of this actuator is predicted through the FEM, simulation and simple experiment. Settling time for transient vibration is reduced to 14.7% according to simulation result.

  • Air core based transformers have been designed, simulated and fabricated by using micromachining process for the application of wireless power transmission with the range of frequency from 1 GHz to 20 GHz. Fabricated transformers are the types of solenoid transformers with primary and secondary coils. the size of fabricated transformer is $1.1{\times}1.5{\sim}2.15\;mm$ including ground shield. Transformers have been measured by dividing two groups based on the turns ratio between primary coil and secondary coil which are 1:1 transformers(the number of turns of primary coil and secondary coil: 3/3, 5/5, 7/7) and l:n transformers(the number of turns of primary coil and secondary coil: 3/3, 3/6, 3/9). As a result of the measurement, the lowest insertion loss of transformers ranged from 2 dB to 2.8 dB according to the number of turns between primary coil and secondary coil. And the lowest insertion loss from the transformers was measured at the frequency from 7 GHz to 11 GHz according to the number of turns between primary coil and secondary coil. Based on the measurement data from the microfabricated transformers, the transformer with the 3/3 turns in the primary coil and secondary coil showed best performance compared to others in terms of lowest insertion loss, lowest insertion loss frequency and bandwidth.

  • Micro On-Off valves are currently recognized as the core technology in the fields of the micro fluid chip fur medical applications and production lines of semi-conduct chip. Micro valves that operate by compressed air need the high-speed responsibility, repeatability, the absorbability and the uniform pressure by the poppet. In this study, Micro On-Off valves that posses the high-speed responsibility and the high rate of flow have designed and analyzed through the law of equivalent magnetic circuit and Finite Element Method (FEM) respectively. • The shutoff unit was designed to provide rapid insertion of neutron absorbing material into the reactor core to shutdown the reactor quickly and also to withdraw the absorber slowly to avoid a log-rate trip. Four shutoff units were installed on the HANARO reactor but the half-core test facility was equipped with one shutoff unit. The reactor trip or shutdown is accomplished by four shutoff units by insertion of the shutoff rods. The shutoff rod(SOR) is actuated by a directly linked hydraulic cylinder on the reactor chimney, which is pressurized by a hydraulic pump. The rod is released to drop by gravity, when triplicate solenoid valves are de-energized to vent the cylinder. The hydraulic pump, pipe and air supply system are provided to be similar with the HANARO reactor. The shutoff rod drops for 647mm stroke within 1.13 seconds to shut down the reactor and it is slowly inserted to the full down position, 700mm, with a damping. We have conducted the drop test of the shutoff rod in order to show the performance and the structural integrity of operating system of the shutoff unit. The present paper deals with the 647mm drop time and the withdrawal time according to variation of the pool water temperature, the water level and the core flow.

  • A magnetically levitated micro-positioner is implemented to avoid mechanical friction and increase precision. Since magnetic levitation system is inherently unstable, most concern is focused on a magnetic circuit design to increase the system dynamic stability. For this, the proposed levitation system is constructed by using an antagonistic structure which permits a simple design and robust stability. From the dynamic equations of motion, it is verified that the proposed magnetically levitated system is decoupled in 6 degree-of-freedom motion. Experimental results are presented in terms of time response and accuracy.
