  • In regard to indoor air quality patterns, the government introduced various polices that were about managing and monitoring quality of indoor air as a major assignment, and also executed 'Indoor Air Quality Management Act' which was presented in the May, 2004. However, among the multi-usage facilities controlled by the Act, the school was not included yet. This study goal was to investigate PM 10 pollution patterns of the high school classrooms using a pattern recognition method based on cluster analysis and disjoint principal component analysis, and further to survey levels of inorganic elements in May, June, and September, 2004. A hierarchical clustering method was examined to obtain possible objects in pseudo homogeneous sample classes by transformation raw data and by applying various distance. Following the analysis, the disjoint principal component analysis was used to define homogeneous sample class after deleting outliers. Then three homogeneous Patterns were obtained as follows: the first class had been separated and objects in the class were considered to be sampled under semi-open condition. This class had high concentration of Ca, Fe, Mg, K, Al, and Na which are related with a soil and a chalk compounds. The second class was obtained in which objects were sampled while working air-conditioners and was identified low concentration of PM 10 and elements. Objects in the last class were assigned during rainy day. A chalk, soil element and various types of anthropogenic sources including combustions and industrial influenced the third class. This methodology was thought to be helpful enough to classify indoor air quality patterns and indoor environmental categories when controlling an indoor air quality.

  • Air-writing recognition is relevant in areas such as natural human-computer interaction, augmented reality, and virtual reality. A trajectory is the most natural way to represent air writing. We analyze the recognition accuracy of words written in air considering five features, namely, writing direction, curvature, trajectory, orthocenter, and ellipsoid, as well as different parameters of a hidden Markov model classifier. Experiments were performed on two representative datasets, whose sample trajectories were collected using a Leap Motion Controller from a fingertip performing air writing. Dataset D1 contains 840 English words from 21 classes, and dataset D2 contains 1600 English words from 40 classes. A genetic algorithm was combined with a hidden Markov model classifier to obtain the best subset of features. Combination ftrajectory, orthocenter, writing direction, curvatureg provided the best feature set, achieving recognition accuracies on datasets D1 and D2 of 98.81% and 83.58%, respectively.

  • Thin-layers of wheat and barley are dried at near-ambient temperatures(3.5$^{\circ}C$ -5$0^{\circ}C$) in order to obtain the intrinsic drying data. The well established apparatus was modified to enable it to record all the sample weight data in still air by using a purpose -built automatically controlled sliding valve. The air could be diverted in less than 0.5seconds and a 7 second period was required to attain a steady weight reading. With this apparatus, very smooth drying curves were obtained. The data of sample weight , drying temperature and dew point temperature wee recorded continuously . The drying process was terminated when the moisture content change in 24 hours was less than 0.004 d.b. This was achieved by drying a sample for about a week . The final points were recorded as the dynamic equilibrium moisture content(EMC). The drying data were than fitted to the exponential Newton model and the dynamic EMC data were fitted to the Modified-Chung-Pfost Model . All the fitted parameters are given and comparison is made with previous published data. The comparisons who that the current drying constants are lower than the previous data, the dynamic EMC data obtained for wheat and barely agree with the previous data. The results show that to obtain the drying constant in the exponential Newton model, adequate drying time is necessary.

  • In an engine test, data are collected in a form of a time series. Usually only the time average of a time series is interesting to engineers while its stochastic fluctuation is being ignored. In this paper, we collect pressure and fuel flux data from an air-breathing engine test and analyze their fluctuations using the multiscale sample entropy analysis, which is suggested as a measure of the complexity of a time series. It is shown that different physical quantities indeed have different complexities at each timescales, suggesting a possibility of an instantaneous tool which evaluates the engine test.

  • This study was conducted to improve the performance of low-temperature vacuum dryer by applying desiccant to cold trap. Performance evaluation was carried out using several desiccants. The amounts of absorption and diffusivity were measured based on analytic model. Results of desiccant performance evaluation revealed that silica-gel had the most excellent performance for conditions of low-temperature vacuum drying process. Silica-gel was applied to cold trap for evaluating the drying performance. The experiment results showed that the drying time was extended as the thickness of sample was increased due to increased heat and mass transfer resistance of drying sample. In addition, as heating plate temperature was increased, drying time was decreased due to increased evaporation pressure of drying sample. Furthermore, drying time with desiccant was decreased approximately 20% than that without desiccant.

  • Not only the insulating oil used for extra high voltage and high capacity transformer has a lot of possibilites of a corona discharge in oil, but the oil is easily degraded by a response of light oxidization. This study is either to classfy, with priority given to a transformer oil produced in Korea belonging to, the insulating oil No. 2, the sample irradiated the ultraviolet rays, treated a corona discharge in oil by a high voltage DC source and done nothing, or to measure the characteristics of breakdown, V-i, I-t and electrode material. The obtained results can be summarized as followings: (1) Unless the sample is contacted with the air, on the process to irradiate the ultraviolet rays, the sample less influence on the changes of the electric characteristics. At the same time, if the sample is contacted with the air and irradiated the ultraviolet rays, the sample shows a remarkable changes of the electric characteristics, and a declined breakdown strength. This tells us that the influence of the light irradiation must be considered as a primary factor of degrading the insulating oil. (2) In the oil treated by a corona discharge, breakdown voltage is declined more than in the oil not to be treated with it. This means that the degradation of the insulating oil is getting increased by a corona discharge in oil. (3) It shows that the increase of conducting current has little to do with breakdown voltage. (4) The conducting current depending on the electrode materials can be put in order by value as Al>Cu>Fe. This is due to the differences of the work function of each metals, and an chemical reaction with the insulating oil. These result can be a great help in verifying the degradation progress of the insulating oil and furnish a new technical information to the manufacturers of the insulating oil and electrical equipment designers and operators. Besides, this study would be helpful to improve the electrical characteristics of the insulating oil produced in Korea.

  • In this paper, we describe a bio-fluidic device for adaptive sample pretreatment, in order to optimize the conditions under which absorbance assays can be conducted. This device can be successfully applied to the measurement of Escherichia coli (E. coli) concentrations using adaptive dilution, with which the dilution ratio can be adjusted during the dilution. Although many attempts have been previously made to miniaturize complex biochemical analyses at the chip scale, very few sample pretreatment processes have actually been miniaturized or automated at this point. Due to the lack of currently available on-chip pretreatments, analytical instruments tend to suffer from a limited range of analysis. This occasionally hinders the direct and quantitative analysis of specific analyses obtained from real samples. In order to overcome these issues, we exploit two novel strategies: dilution with a programmable ratio, and to-and-fro mixing. The bio-fluidic device consists of a rectangular chamber constructed of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). This chamber has four openings, an inlet, an outlet, an air control, and an air vent. Each of the dilution cycles is comprised of four steps: detection, liquid drain, buffer injection, and to-and-fro mixing. When using adaptive sample pretreatment, the range in which E. coli concentrations can be measured is broadened, to an optical density (O.D.) range of $0.3{\sim}30$. This device may prove useful in the on-line monitoring of cell concentrations, in both fermenter and aqueous environments.

  • High $T_c(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})Ba_2Cu_3O_y[(YNS)-123]$ superconductors with/without $CeO_2$ additive were systematically investigated by the zone melt growth process in air. Cylindrical green rods of (YNS)-123 oxides were fabricated by cold isostatic pressing (CIP) method using rubber mould. A sample prepared by this method showed well-textured microstructure, and $(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})_2BaCuO_5[(YNS)211]$ nonsuperconducting inclusions were uniformly dispersed in large $(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})Ba_2Cu_3O_y$[(YNS)123] superconducting matrix. In this study, optimum melting temperature and growth rate were $1100^{\circ}C$ and 3 mm/hr, respectively. The directionally melt-textured (YNS)-123 sample with $CeO_2$ additive showed an onset critical temperature $(T_c)\;T_c{\geq}93K$ and sharp superconducting transition.

  • The gas adsorption efficiency for various surfaces with three different characteristics has been reviewed. The dimethyl disulfide gas has been used to investigate characteristics of gas adsorption for different surface characteristics such as plasma treated, lacquer coated and untreated. Three different surfaces were evaluated in dry conditions initially and tested at wet surface conditions with spraying water to evaluate the gas adsorption efficiency which usually occurred at defrost cycles. The results show that the gas adsorption of the plasma treated sample has better performance than others. The lacquer coated and untreated samples showed the similar result, but the lacquer coated sample showed a slightly better performance.

  • For studying this project, we selected a 2-storied detached house as a sample which was constructed in July 1976, the last year of the 3rd 5-years economic and social development plan and also the middle year between the years of the 1st oil crisis and the 2nd oil crisis, located In Gayang-dong, Daejeon City. The contents and scope of this project was to produce retrofit measures by theoretically analyzing the building energy use between both of pre-retrofit and post-retrofit conditions of this sample house, and to compare and analyze the predicated data with experimented data under post - retrofit condition. It is suggested in this report that we have to develop rational and practical retrofit measures for energy conservations in existing residences.
