Trend of exhaust emission control of diesel engine vehicles in Korea (국내 경유자동차 배출물 규제동향)

  • This short report describes the trend of exhaust emission control of the diesel engine vehicles in Korea, which originally was motivated from the newly proposed Emission Control Regulation of Diesel Engine Vehicles possible to be activated in 1991 by Korean Environmental Protection Agency. This short survey report has been prepared by the special working group of The Korea Society of Automotive Engineers (KSAE) on this particular subject. This report includes (1) estimation of portions of contribution of diesel engine vehicle emission to total air pollution, (2) comparison of proposals of new articles/regulations/laws in Korea with those of other selected countries such as USA, European countries, and Japan, (3) comparison of vehical emission control regulations in Korea with those in other selected countries, (4) technical aspects of possibilities of reduction of diesel engine vehicle emissions, (5) additional administrational aspects of technology development program, (6) social impact resulted from the severe emission control regulation on diesel engine vehicles, and (7) proposals, prepared by the special working group of the KSAE, on the emission control regulation of diesel engine vehicles, which can possibly bring better cleaner air released from the air pollution resulted from diesel engine exhaust emissions in real sense with minimal financial contribution, with optimal technological efforts, with less social impacts, within five to ten year period.

  • Public concern has recently increased over the potential risk of toxic elements emitted from anthropogenic sources. Among these, mercury has drawn special attention owing to its increasing level of bioaccumulation in the environment and in the food chain, with potential risks for human health. This paper presents an overview of research related to mercury control technology and identifies areas requiring additional research and development. It critically reviews measured mercury emissions progress in the development of promising control technologies, including catalytic oxidation, sorbent injection, photochemistry oxidation, and air pollution control devices.

Mathematical Programming for Air Pollution Control in Pusan (부산시 대기오염방지를 위한 수리계획법)

  • This study was performed to find the most desirable emission reduction for each mobile source pollutant and the optimal control strategy at a given level of expenditures in Pusan City in 2000 by using the interactive s-constraint method developed by Chang-Hyo Lee and Hyung-Wook Kim, which isone of the mathematical programming models. The most desirable emission reduction is 7093 ton/year for particulate (TSP), 4871 ton/year for NOx, 5148 ton/year for HC and 36779 ton/year for CO. The optimal control strategy is as follows; 1. As to passenger car and taxi, limiting VKT (vehicle kilometers travelled) in congested areas will be necessary. In addition to this, improving vehicie inspection Program should be enforced. 2. As to small-gasoline bus, traffic adaptive control system will be necessary. 3. As to small-diesel bus, non-adjustable engine parameters will have to be applied. .4. As to heal bus and heart truck, catalytic trap oxidizer and limiting VKT in congested areas will do necessary. 5. As to motorcycle, 2-cycle motorcycles should be converted to 4-cycle motorcycles.

  • Commercially available fuel oil for power plant contains relatively much sulphur, which means accordingly high content sulphur deoxide in exhaust gas. Sulphur deoxide has been identified as the worst-pollutant caused by thermal power generation. This paper primarily deals with the stack gas diffusion effects of various parameters, namely vertical stability, wind velocity, exhaust gas velocity, stack height, etc., on the ground concentration. thereof the relation between stack height and maximum plant capacity is analyzed from the standpoint of air pollution prevention. The limit capacity is calculated by means of mean concentration introducing Mead and Lowry coefficient respectively.

Necessity of Epigenetic Epidemiology Studies on the Carcinogenesis of Lung Cancer in Never Smokers

  • Based on epidemiological and genomic characteristics, lung cancer in never smokers (LCNS) is a different disease from lung cancer in smokers. Based on current research, the main risk factor for LCNS may be air pollution. A recent case-control study in Koreans reported that nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) may be a risk factor for LCNS. Additionally, a cohort study showed that exposure to $NO_2$ was associated with significant hypomethylation. Thus, epigenetic epidemiology studies are needed in the near future to evaluate the carcinogenesis of LCNS according to chronic exposure to air pollution and/or viral infections.

Development of diesel particulate filter for diesel locomotives (디젤기관차용 입자상물질 배출 저감필터 연구)

  • The particulate matters emitted by diesel locomotives cause serious air pollution in stations and railroad. There have been various attempt to reduce the air pollution from diesel bus or trucks. However, the air pollution from the diesel locomotives has been out of control because there has not any adaptable technology. In this study, a diesel particulate filter was developed and applied to the diesel locomotives. A 3,000 horsepower large-scale locomotive and a 1,500 horsepower middle-scale locomotive were used for the test of the filter. The particulate matter emissions before and after the treatment was monitored by a scanning mobility particle sizer and a dust monitor. As a result, it was observed that the particulate matters could be successfully removed from the emission gases by using the filter.

  • For the past years, there had been some environmental cooperation among East Asian countries to reduce air pollution emissions from China. However, the progress of cooperation has been under developed because of lacking financial support, poor design of planning, and weak economic incentives for the industries. In this paper, some practical approaches have been suggested. First, electric trade to make Asian Grid among countries will be good alternatives for the fossil fuel, such as coal, for China. Secondly, natural gas pipeline from West China to Siberian pipeline would change the whole energy mix in this area around 2010, Therefore, it is very promising area for the energy industries to involve in gas project and get rid of many institutional barriers from China. Lastly, environmental industry is growing fast in East Asian. In China, waste treatment and management, air pollution control, and water quality management are some promising areas for the future. Hence it is desirable for Korea, Japan and China to make a eco-fund or company to boost up environmental technology as well as environmental market size.

Influence Factors and Management based on Phase of Building Construction for the Improvement of Post Occupancy Indoor Air Quality

  • In recent years, pollution in residential spaces has been a significant area of concern. In particular, the indoor air quality (IAQ) of an apartment building before occupancy, which is related to the interior material, is a serious problem. Unlike previous research, which has mainly focused on pollution control after construction, this study has derived influencing factors and priority of management with a controlling schedule for IAQ. The objectives of this research are 1) control of schedule or improvement of management for IAQ, 2) distribution of responsibility to the parties concerned (factory, material company, construction company, design and engineering, occupancy). The results show the relative priority of the four major items in wall?based apartment buildings and in column?based apartment buildings. An analysis of the parties responsible for improvement based on the IAQ results shows more efforts to improve IAQ are needed in material factories and engineering/design companies.

Correlation Analysis of Atmospheric Pollutants and Meteorological Factors Based on Environmental Big Data

  • With the acceleration of urbanization and industrialization, air pollution has become increasingly serious, and the pollution control situation is not optimistic. Climate change has become a major global challenge faced by mankind. To actively respond to climate change, China has proposed carbon peak and carbon neutral goals. However, atmospheric pollutants and meteorological factors that affect air quality are complex and changeable, and the complex relationship and correlation between them must be further clarified. This paper uses China's 2013-2018 high-resolution air pollution reanalysis open data set, as well as statistical methods of the Pearson Correlation Coefficient (PCC) to calculate and visualize the design and analysis of environmental monitoring big data, which is intuitive and it quickly demonstrated the correlation between pollutants and meteorological factors in the temporal and spatial sequence, and provided convenience for environmental management departments to use air quality routine monitoring data to enable dynamic decision-making, and promote global climate governance. The experimental results show that, apart from ozone, which is negatively correlated, the other pollutants are positively correlated; meteorological factors have a greater impact on pollutants, temperature and pollutants are negatively correlated, air pressure is positively correlated, and the correlation between humidity is insignificant. The wind speed has a significant negative correlation with the six pollutants, which has a greater impact on the diffusion of pollutants.
