This study focused on a comprehensive and detailed interpretation for the springtime air quality influenced by both artificial (particulate matter (PM) and asbestos) and biological (pollen) sources in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. An intensive measurement of PM was conducted at four characteristic sites (i.e., a heavy traffic area, a residential area, an industrial area, and a desolate area) in the Fukuoka Prefecture during spring of 2007. Analysis of major ionic species in $PM_{2.5}$ was performed by an Ion Chromatography, and asbestos and pollen were identified by Scanning Electron Microscopy with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX). $PM_{2.5}$ concentration ($65.3{\mu}gm^{-3}$) measured in an industrial area (site C) was extraordinarily high compared to those monitored in other areas; it greatly exceeded the Japan's $PM_{2.5}$ criteria (a daily average of $35{\mu}gm^{-3}$). NOAA's HYSPLIT dispersion model suggests that this high level of $PM_{2.5}$ monitored at site C is unlikely to affect the Asian continent. The ambient concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$-related anions ($NH_4{^+}$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $SO_4{^{2-}}$) and their relative contributions to $PM_{2.5}$ were also investigated in four study areas. The concentrations of these major water-soluble ions exhibit not only strong spatial dependence but also different ratios to each other. Asbestos fiber (crocidolite and amosite) concentration values changed in the range of 2.5 to 14.4 f per liter of air. The number of pollen grains showed that Cedar ranked higher in concentration than other types of pollen, with the maximum concentration at site A.
RADCONS Ver. 1.0 (RADiological CONSequence Assessment Program) was developed for radiological risk assessment in this study. A Gaussian plume model was used to analyze the fate and transport of radionuclides released into the air in case of accidents. Both single meterological data and time series meterological data can be used in RADCONS. To assess the radiological risk of the early phase after an accident, ED (Effective Dose) estimated by both deterministic and probabilistic approaches are presented. These EDs by deterministic and probabilistic will be helpful to efficient decision making for decision makers. External doses from deposited materials by time are presented for quantifying the effects of mid and late phases of an accident. A radiological risk assessment was conducted using RADCONS for an accident scenario of 1 Ci of Cs-137. The maximum of ED for radii of 1,000 meters from the accident point was 8.51E-4 mSv. After Monte-Carlo simulation, considering the uncertainty of the breathing rate and dispersion parameters, the average ED was 8.49E-4, and the 95 percentile was 1.10E-3. A data base of the dose coefficients and a sampling module of the meteorological data will be modified to improve the user's convenience in the next version.

As the interest in the millimeter wave frequency (30 ~300 GHz) increases, Nonradiative Dielectric (NRD) guide is being more attractive due to its low loss characteristics. Most of millimeter wave components, which can be realized with waveguide, can also be realized with NRD guide since NRD guide has similar dispersion characteristics and field patterns to waveguide. Previously, Variational Method was applied to the gap discontinuity problem to design a gap-coupled NRD bandpass filter. In this paper, the design procedure was simplified by replacing the air gap region with an equivalent circuit model of an evanescent waveguide using the fact that the NRD guide has a similar structure with a dielectric-filled metal waveguide. Prior to applying this design method to the bandpass filter of millimeter wave frequency range, a bandpass filter of which center frequency is 10 GHz(3-Pole, 0.1 dB ripple, 2% fractional bandwidth) was designed and fabricated. The measured result agrees with one simulated with HFSS within an error range of a fabrication.
Since the rate and completeness of combustion in direct injection engines were controlled by the characteristics of gas flow fields and sprays, an understanding of those was essential to the design of the direct injection engines. In this study the numerical simulations of swirl effects on the characteristics of gas flow fields and sprays were performed using the spray model that could predict the interactions between gas fields and spray droplets. The governing equations were discretized by the finite volume method and the modified k- e model which included the compressibility effects due to the compression/expansion of piston was used. The results of numerical calculation of the spray characteristics in the quiescent environment were compared with the experimental data. There were good agreements between the results of calculation and the experimental data, except in the early stages of spray. In the motoring condition, the results showed that a substantial air entrainment into the spray volume was emerged and hence the squish motion was relatively unimportant during fuel injection periods. As the swirl ratio increased, the evaporation rate was increased due to the wide dispersion of the spray droplets and the strong interaction between spray droplets and gas fields.
Background: It is necessary to consider the overall countermeasure for analysis of nuclear activities according to the increase of the nuclear facilities like nuclear power and reprocessing plants in the neighboring countries including China, Taiwan, North Korea, Japan and South Korea. South Korea and comprehensive nuclear-test-ban treaty organization (CTBTO) are now operating the monitoring instruments to detect radionuclides released into the air. It is important to estimate the origin of radionuclides measured using the detection technology as well as the monitoring analysis in aspects of investigation and security of the nuclear activities in neighboring countries. Materials and methods: A three-dimensional forward/backward trajectory model has been developed to estimate the origin of radionuclides for a covert nuclear activity. The developed trajectory model was composed of forward and backward modules to track the particle positions using finite difference method. Results and discussion: A three-dimensional trajectory model was validated using the measured data at Chernobyl accident. The calculated results showed a good agreement by using the high concentration measurements and the locations where was near a release point. The three-dimensional trajectory model had some uncertainty according to the release time, release height and time interval of the trajectory at each release points. An atmospheric dispersion model called long-range accident dose assessment system (LADAS), based on the fields of regards (FOR) technique, was applied to reduce the uncertainties of the trajectory model and to improve the detective technology for estimating the radioisotopes emission area. Conclusion: The detective technology developed in this study can evaluate in release area and origin for covert nuclear activities based on measured radioisotopes at monitoring stations, and it might play critical tool to improve the ability of the nuclear safety field.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the scientific basic grounds for the assessment of health and environmental diseases resulting from air pollutants in Pohang. For this study, we investigated pollutants, weather characteristics and concentration distribution of fine particles ($PM_10$) yearly and each season, using data from Air Quality Monitoring Stations. The properties of concentration distribution and seasonal fluctuation of $PM_10$ were studied qualitatively and quantitatively using CALPUFF, air dispersion model. The average concentration of $PM_10$ for each season was spring($75.7{\mu}g/m^3$)>summer($56.8{\mu}g/m^3$)>winter($53.6{\mu}g/m^3$)>fall( $52.7{\mu}g/m^3$). In the case of spring, high concentrations appear due to the Asian dust frequently occurring. The contributions of $PM_10$ classified by the types of pollution source in Pohang were point source 62%>mobile source 33%>area source 5%. An important point is that 97% of emissions were produced from the iron manufacture in steel industry. Therefore, it is necessary to control the emission sources of pollutants and to construct an observation system at Pohang steel industrial complex from now on. It’s time to control the risk factors for health and environmental disease to protect the health of resident in Pohang and its neighboring areas.

The AERMOD model was the most used, accounting for 89.0%, based on the analysis of the environmental impact assessment reports published in the Environmental Impact Assessment Information Support System (EIASS) between 2021 and 2022. The mismatch of versions between AERMET and AERMOD was found to be 25.3%. There was the operational time discrepancy of 50.6% from industrial complexes, urban development projects between used in the model and applied in estimating pollutant emissions. The results of applying various versions of the AERMET and AERMOD models to both area sources and point sources in both simple and complex terrain in the Gunsan area showed similar values after AERMOD version 12 (15181). Emissions are assessed as 24-hour operation, and the predicted concentration in both simple and complex terrain when using the variable emission coefficient option that applies an 8-hour daytime operation in the model is lowered by 37.42% ~ 74.27% for area sources and by 32.06% ~ 54.45% for point sources. Therefore, to prevent the error in using the variable emission coefficient, it is required to clearly present the emission calculation process and provide a detailed explanation of the composition of modeling input data in the environmental impact assessment reports. Also, thorough reviews by special institutions are essential.
$SO_2$ concentrations in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) were predicted by the regional segment ISCST3 modeling. The SMA was segmented by three modeling regions where the weather monitoring station exists since the area of the SMA, approximately $100km{\times}100km$, is too wide to be modeled by one modeling domain. The predicted concentrations by the model were compared with the measured concentrations at 39 air monitoring stations located in the SMA to validate the ISCST3 modeling coupled with the regional segment approach. The predicted concentrations by the regional segment method showed better performance in depicting the measurements than those by the non-segment ISCST3 modeling. The correction methods of the calculated concentrations reviewed were here the correlation method by the first order linear equation and the ratio method of observed to calculated concentrations. The corrected concentrations by two methods showed good agreement with the measured data. The ratio method was, however, easily applicable to the concentration correction in case of a wide modeling region considered in this study.
This study evaluates the simulated meteorological fields with a particular focus on the low-level wind, which plays an important role in air pollutants dispersion, under the varying synoptic environment. Additionally, the effects of subgrid-scale orography parameterization and improved topography/land-use data on the simulated low-level wind is investigated. The WRF model version 4.1.3 is utilized to simulate two cases that were affected by different synoptic environments. One case from 2 to 6 April 2012 presents the substantial low-level wind speed over the Korean peninsula where the synoptic environment is characterized by the baroclinic instability. The other case from 14 to 18 April 2012 presents the relatively weak low-level wind speed and distinct diurnal cycle of low-level meteorological fields. The control simulations of both cases represent the systematic overestimation of the low-level wind speed. The positive bias for the case under the baroclinic instability is considerably alleviated by applying the subgrid-scale orography parameterization. However, the improvement of wind speed for the other case showing relatively weak low-level wind speed is not significant. Applying the high-resolution topography and land-use data also improves the simulated wind speed by reducing the positive bias. Our analysis shows that the increased roughness length in the high-resolution topography and land-use data is the key contributor that reduces the simulated wind speed. The simulated wind direction is also improved with the high-resolution data for both cases. Overall, our study indicates that wind forecasts can be improved through the application of the subgrid-scale orography parameterization and high-resolution topography/land-use data.
The terrain features and surface characteristics are the most important elements not only in meteorological modeling but also in air quality modeling. The diurnal evolution of local climate over complex terrain may be significantly controlled by the ground irregularities. Such topographic features can affect a thermally driven flow, either directly by causing changes in the wind direction or indirectly, by inducing significant variations in the ground temperature. Over a complex terrain, these variations are due to the nonuniform distribution of solar radiation, which is highly determined by the ground geometrical characteristics, i.e. slope and orientation. Therefore, the accuracy of prediction of regional scale circulation is strong associated with the accuracy of land-use and topographic information in meso-scale circulation assessment. The objective of this work is a numerical simulation using MM5-A2C model with the detailed topography and land-use information as the surface boundary conditions of the air flow field in mountain regions. Meteorological conditions estimated by MM5-A2C command a great influence on the dispersion of mountain areas with the reasonable feature of topography where there is an important difference in orographic forcing.
