Among political scientists, Japan's free trade agreements (FTA) with member nations of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been considered to be a political tool that can compete against China for regional leadership in East Asia. However, this paper demonstrates that Japan's so-called FTA diplomacy towards ASEAN nations serves the broad interests of Japanese actors in both the political and economic sectors. Given the attention to Japanese domestic political issues, it is argued that diplomacy primarily facilitates a need for free trade with ASEAN and ASEAN markets for Japanese corporations to compete in the global economy and for the government to nurture Japan's stagnant economy by assisting these corporations. This work also contends that the unclear function of FTA as an economic good is due to the lack of the government capacity to effectively manage FTA diplomacy. This partly results from the conventional view with regard to Sino-Japanese rivalry.

The purpose of this study was to explore Korean divorced mothers' experiences with child support. The data were collected from 17 Korean divorced mothers who were divorced between the years of 2004 and 2009 and were raising at least one minor child. Data were analyzed based on the inductive data analysis method. Most mothers negotiated to receive child support from noncustodial fathers without experiencing much conflict with the fathers at the time of the divorce, but only five mothers received child support at the time of the interviews. The mothers experienced difficulties in receiving child support from the fathers under the child support policy in Korea that treated child support as a personal issue and provided little systemic support for child support. Regarding required parenting agreements, most of the mothers acknowledged the need to have parenting agreements but they still wanted voluntary payment of the child support from the fathers. The results suggest that it is necessary to expand parenting education for divorced parents to encourage voluntary participation in parenting and to improve the child support policy by introducing child support guidelines and enhancing child support collection systems.

Transient acoustic and elastic wave propagation in inhomogeneous media are studied by using the Fourier method. It is known that the fourier method has advantages in memory requirements and computing speed over conventional methods such as FDM and FEM, because the Fourier method needs less grid points for achieving the same accuracy. To verify the proposed numerical scheme, several examples having analytic solutions are considered, where two different semi-infinite media are in contact along a plane boundary. The comparisons of numerical results by the Fourier method and analytic solutions show good agreements. In addition, the fourier method is applied to a layered half-plane, in which an elastic semi-infinite medium is covered by an elastic layer of finite thickness. It is showed how to derive the analytic solutions by using the Cagniard-de Hoop method. The numerical solutions are in excellent agreements with analytic results.

This paper discusses to what extent the party autonomy can be allowed in intellectual property dispute resolution agreements in determination of governing law, international jurisdiction, and ADR agreement for arbitration, etc. in considering of the territoriality principle of IP. The party autonomy in choice of governing law and jurisdiction can be fully enjoyed in IP contract disputes. However, the freedom of choice is limited to the disputes regarding IF infringement disputes. The party autonomy is denied in the issues of determination of validity of patent or other IP rights. The author seeks the possibility to allow as much freedom in making choice of applicable law or jurisdiction, or entering into arbitration agreement.

This paper investigates on the legal doctrine of "voluntary, knowing, and intelligent" (VKI Doctrine). The main points that were discussed include the history of the VKI doctrine and the US courts' attitudes toward the doctrine. It was also discussed how the VKI doctrine influenced the protection of consumer who agreed to arbitrate with businesses. The US courts' attitudes have shown to be split in application of the VKI doctrine to disputes in the enforceability of arbitration agreement between the consumers and the businesses. In order for the arbitration agreement to be invalidated, the state legislature cannot enact law that are directly targeted toward the validity of arbitration agreement. Rather the contract law in each of the state should be applied to the evaluation of the validity of an arbitration agreement. As the more and more consumers become familiar with the arbitration, the need for the VKI doctrine to protect the individual consumers in arbitration is expected to be diminished in future disputes.

Vehicle dynamic simulation has been carried out using the coherence of road roughness between left and right wheels. The generated twin tracks with the coherence of road roughness between left and right wheels are in good agreements with the measured coherence relation of left and right wheels. And these tracks reflect well on the roughness characteristics of real roads. Using the generated roads and multibody dynamic simulation program, vehicle dynamic simulation is performed. The vertical and roll motion analysis of a vehicle are carried out using the realistic road profiles with the coherence between left and right wheels and the results are in good agreements with the dynamic characteristics of a vehicle.

The objective of this study was to estimate the quantitative loss of the consumer surplus due to the tariffs on clothing imports during the WTO starting periods. For 1984-1996, the import price elasticity of the clothing was estimated from the regression of pet capita clothing imports on Per capita GNP, import price index and domestic producer price index. Then the quantitative losses of the consumer surplus in clothing were obtained from the simplified formula for 1990-1995. In spite of the decrease in textiles St clothing tariff rates, consumer costs were increasing, which was caused by the tremendous increase in clothing imports during the same period. The loss of the consumer surplus was 7131 billion wonts in 1995, which accounted for 6.4% of the total clothing expenditure.

This study raises the question about why do many international fisheries organizations or regional fisheries agreements come into existence, sustain, and develop prior to the internationally recognized institution such as United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea(UNCLOS). In oder to solve the problem, I will investigate the characteristics of fisheries as renewable resources and propose the collusion model where it is based on the cost-benefit analysis. Especially, if once a fooall large number of fishing is implemented, they are immediately depleted. Consequently they are extinct and no longer exploitable. Thus each interest nations or participants will be better off if they are cooperative and will be worse off if they are competitive or noncooperative in a resource management. Therefore, many of the internationally recognized fisheries institutions and agreements have been made and developed in these days.
