  • In this article, we considered shear-induced microstructure and rheological behavior of micellar solutions of cationic surfactant, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) in the presence of a structure-forming additive, sodium salicylate (NaSal). Shear viscosity, shear moduli and flow birefringence were measured as functions of the surfactant and additive concentrations. In the presence of NaSal, the micellar solution exhibited the non-linear rheological behavior due to the formation of supramolecular structures when the molar ratio of NaSal to CPC exceeded a certain threshold value. Flow birefringence probed the change in micelle alignment under shear flow. At low shear rates, the flow birefringence increased as the shear rate increased. On the other hand, fluctuation of flow birefringence appeared from the shear rate near the onset of shear thickening, which was caused by shear-induced coagulation or aggregation. These results were confirmed by the SEM images of in situ gelified micelle structure through sol-gel route.

  • We recently reported that, 2-chloro-3-(4-hexylphenyI)-amino-l, 4-naphthoquinone(NQ304), a naphthoquinone derivative, had potent inhibitory effects on the platelet aggregation in vitro and thrombosis in vivo. Furthermore, we reported the antiplatelet mechanism of NQ304 by the reduction of the thromboxane A2 formation, inhibition of adenosine triphosphate release and intracellular calcium mobilization.(omitted)

  • In order to fabricate a high density sintered body of ITO, nano-sized ITO powders were synthesized by coprecipitation methods. Aqueous solutions of indium and tin salts were mixed and coprecipitated by changing their pH. Coprecipitated ITO powders possessed 20-30 nm crystallite size and a relatively high BET value ($35m^2/g$), however, aggregation of particles were occurred. Therefore, a novel recrystallization technique was applied in order to eliminate the aggregates. The recrystallized ITO material consists of a little bit larger needlelike crystals, $20nm{\times}80nm$, and it possesses a higher BET value $(57m^{2}/g)$ compared to the plain coprecipitated material $(35m^{2}/g)$. Metastable phase formation and higher content of aggregated particles were observed in the coprecipitated materials. Densification was 95% to 98% complete after 5 hour sintering at $1500^{\circ}C$ for the recrystallized powders while densities of the coprecipitated powders were below 75%.

  • Synthesis of silver nanoparticles by the supersonic nozzle expansion method with corona discharge ions was investigated. Corona discharge ions functioned as seeds for heterogeneous nucleation in the silver nanoparticles formation process and provided silver nanoparticles with electronic repulsive force that prevents aggregation of the particles. For ion ejecting, we used sonic-jet corona discharger. Upon application of the corona discharge ions, the mean diameter of the produced particles was decreased from 12.54 to 6.22nm and the standard deviation was decreased from 5.02 to 3.34nm. In addition, the agglomeration of silver nanoparticles was reduced.

  • Human tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) is a valuable thrombolytic agent used to successfully treat acute myocardial infarction, thromboembolic stroke, peripheral arterial occlusion, and venous thromboembolism. Recombinant tPA is accumulated as an inactive form in inclusion bodies of E. coli and is refolded in vitro, which is accompanied by extensive aggregation. In the present study, a tPA protease domain was expressed in an active soluble form in the cytosol of E. coli Rosetta-gami cells, which allowed disulfide bond formation and supplied the tRNA molecules required for six rarely used codons in E. coli. This strategy increased the amount of soluble protease domain protein and avoided the cumbersome refolding process. The purified protease domain not only degraded tPA substrate peptides but also formed a covalently bound complex with plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, as does full-length tPA. Soluble expression and purification of tPA domains may aid in functional analyses of this multi-domain protein, which has been implicated in many physiological and pathological processes.

  • Brewster angle microscopy(BAM) makes it possible to measure domains of Langmuir films. Especially, formation and phase transition of the PAAS Langmuir monolayers from a gas phase to a solid phase at the air-water interface were observed by the use of BAM. And also we observed the comparative images of films deposited at each phase. The UV/visible absorption spectra of this films showed molecular intensity and aggregation at each state. The electrical properties of this material were measured by current-voltage(I-V) characteristics.

  • We have used mutational analysis to identity four genes, MXAN3553, MXAN3554, MXAN3555, and MXAN3556, constituting an operon that is essential for normal fruiting body development in Myxococcus xanthus. Deletion of MXAN3553, which encoded a hypothetical protein, resulted in delayed fruiting body development. MXAN3554 was predicted to encode a metallopeptidase, and its deletion caused fruiting body formation to fail. Inactivation of MXAN3555, which encoded a putative NtrC-type response regulator, resulted in delayed aggregation and a severe reduction in sporulation. Fruiting bodies also failed to develop with the deletion of MXAN3556, another gene encoding a hypothetical protein.

  • Small intestine has a structure called villi that increases the mucosal surface area for nutrient absorption. Intricate and tight epithelial-mesenchymal interactions are required for villi development. These interactions are regulated by signaling molecules, physical forces, and epithelial deformation. Signaling molecules include hedgehog (Hh), bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) and Wnt ligands. The Hh ligand is expressed from the epithelium and binds to the underlying mesenchymal cells, resulting in aggregation into mesenchymal clusters. The clusters express BMP and Wnt ligands to control its size and spacing between clusters. The clusters then form villi. Despite the fact that the villi formation is studied extensively, we do not have a complete understanding. In addition, the recent study shows there is a great relationship between the overexpression of the Hh signal and development of cancer in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, signaling between epithelial and mesenchymal cells and their physical interactions will be discussed on this review.

  • An oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion [20 wt% com oil, 0.5-6.0 wt% fish gelatin (FG), pH 3.0] was produced by high pressure homogenization, and the influence of pH, protein concentration, and homogenization condition on the formation of FG-stabilized emulsions was assessed by measuring particle size distribution, electrical charge, creaming stability, microstructure, and free FG concentration in the emulsions. Optical microscopy indicated that there were some large droplets ($d>10\;{\mu}m$) in all FG-emulsions, nevertheless, the amount of large droplets tended to decrease with increasing FG concentration. More than 90% of FG was present free in the continuous phase of the emulsions. To facilitate droplet disruption and prevent droplet coalescence within the homogenizer, homogenization time was adjusted in O/W emulsions stabilized by 2.0 or 4.0 wt% FG. However, the increase in the number of pass rather promoted droplet coalescence. This study has shown that the FG may have some limited use as a protein emulsifier in O/W emulsions.

  • Surface modification of polypropylene hollow fiber membranes was peformed in order to develop blood-compatible biomaterials for use in the blood contacting and oxygenation membranes of a lung-assist device(LAD). Blood compatibility was determined by using anticoagulation blood and evaluating formation of blood clots on their surfaces as well as activation of plasma coagulation cascade, platelet adhesion, and aggregation. It was verified that the number of platelets on the silicone coated fibers was significantly lower than those on polypropylene. It was also found that the polypropylene hollow fiber membranes using plasma treatment exhibited suppression of complement activation in blood compatibility test.
