  • The statistical characteristics of aerosol-cloud interactions over East Asia were investigated using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer satellite data. The long-term relationship between various aerosol and cloud parameters was estimated using correlation analysis, principle component analysis, and Aerosol Indirect Effect (AIE) estimation. In correlation analysis, Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) was positively Correlated with Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) and Cloud Fraction (CF), but negatively correlated with Cloud Top Temperature (CTT) and Cloud Top Pressure (CTP). Fine Mode Fraction (FMF) and CCN were positively correlated over the ocean because of sea spray. In principle component analysis, AOD and FMF were influenced by water vapor. In particular, AOD was positively influenced by CF, and negatively by CTT and CTP over the ocean. In AIE estimation, the AIE value in each cloud layer and type was mostly negative (Twomey effect) but sometimes positive (anti-Twomey effect). This is related to regional, environmental, seasonal, and meteorological effects. Rigorous and extensive studies on aerosol-cloud interactions over East Asia should be conducted via micro- and macro-scale investigations, to determine chemical characteristics using various meteorological instruments.

  • Solar radiation is scattered and absorbed atmospheric compositions in the atmosphere before it reaches the surface and, then after reflected at the surface, until it reaches the satellite sensor. Therefore, consideration of the radiative transfer through the atmosphere is essential for the quantitave analysis of the satellite sensed data, specially at shortwave region. This study examined a feasibility of using radiative transfer code for estimating the atmospheric effects on satellite remote sensing data. To do this, the flux simulated by LOWTRAN7 is compared with CAGEX data in shortwave region. The CAGEX (CERES/ARM/GEWEX Experiment) data provides a dataset of (1) atmospheric soundings, aerosol optical depth and albedo, (2) ARM(Aerosol Radiation Measurement) radiation flux measured by pyrgeometers, pyrheliometer and shadow pyranometer and (3) broadband shortwave flux simulated by Fu-Liou's radiative transfer code. To simulate aerosol effect using the radiative transfer model, the aerosol optical characteristics were extracted from observed aerosol column optical depth, Spinhirne's experimental vertical distribution of scattering coefficient and D'Almeida's statistical atmospheric aerosols radiative characteristics. Simulation of LOWTRAN7 are performed on 31 sample of completely clear days. LOWTRAN's result and CAGEX data are compared on upward, downward direct, downward diffuse solar flux at the surface and upward solar flux at the top of the atmosphere(TOA). The standard errors in LOWTRAN7 simulation of the above components are within 5% except for the downward diffuse solar flux at the surface(6.9%). The results show that a large part of error in LOWTRAN7 flux simulation appeared in the diffuse component due to scattering mainly by atmispheric aerosol. For improving the accuracy of radiative transfer simulation by model, there is a need to provide better information about the radiative charateristrics of atmospheric aerosols.

  • An algorithm for detection of yellow sand aerosols has been developed with infrared bands. This algorithm is a hybrid algorithm that has used two methods combined. The first method used the differential absorption in brightness temperature difference between $11{\mu}m\;and\;12{\mu}m\;(BTD1)$. The radiation at $11{\mu}m$ is absorbed more than at $12{\mu}m$ when yellow sand is loaded in the atmosphere, whereas it will be the other way around when cloud is present. The second method uses the brightness temperature difference between $3.7{\mu}m\;and\;11{\mu}m(BTD2)$. This technique is sensitive to dust loading, which the BTD2 is enhanced by reflection of $3.7{\mu}m$ solar radiation. First the Principle Component Analysis (PCA), a form of eigenvector statistical analysis from the two methods, is performed and the aerosol pixel with the lowest 10% of the eigenvalue is eliminated. Then the aerosol index (AI) from the combination of BTD 1 and 2 is derived. We applied this method to Multi-functional Transport Satellite-l Replacement (MTSAT-1R) data and obtained that the derived AI showed remarkably good agreements with Ozone Mapping Instrument (OMI) AI and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol optical depth.

  • In this present study, the sensitivity of O4 Air Mass Factor (AMF) to Aerosol Peak Height (APH) has been investigated using radiative transfer model according to various parameters(wavelength (340 nm and 477 nm), aerosol type (smoke, dust, sulfate), aerosol optical depth (AOD), surface reflectance, solar zenith angle, and viewing zenith angle). In general, it was found that O4 AMF at 477 nm is more sensitive to APH than that at 340 nm and is stably retrieved with low spectral fitting error in Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) analysis. In high AOD condition, sensitivity of O4 AMF on APH tends to increase. O4 AMF at 340 nm decreased with increasing solar zenith angle. This dependency isthought to be induced by the decrease in length of the light path where O4 absorption occurs due to the shielding effect caused by Rayleigh and Mie scattering at high solar zenith angles above 40°. At 477 nm, as the solar zenith angle increased, multiple scattering caused by Rayleigh and Mie scattering partly leads to the increase of O4 AMF in nonlinear function. Based on synthetic radiance, APHs have been retrieved using O4 AMF. Additionally, the effect of AOD uncertainty on APH retrieval error has been investigated. Among three aerosol types, APH retrieval for sulfate type is found to have the largest APH retrieval error due to uncertainty of AOD. In the case of dust aerosol, it was found that the influence of AOD uncertainty is negligible. It indicates that aerosol types affect APH retrieval error since absorption scattering characteristics of each aerosol type are various.

  • Extensive forest fires occurred across the border in Russia. particularly east of Lake Baikal between the Amur and Lena rivers in May 2003. These forest fires released large amounts of particulates and gases into the atmosphere. resulting in adverse effects on regional air quality and the global radiation budget. Smoke pollution from the Russian fires near Lake Baikal was sometimes transported to Korea through Mongolia and eastern China. In this study ground based radiation (visible and UV-B) data measured during May 2003 at Seoul and Kwangju were analyzed to estimate smoke aerosol impacts on solar radiation. Surface criteria air pollutants ($PM_{10}$, CO, $O_3$) data were also obtained from National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) during smoke aerosol event period (19 May~24 May 2003). Large Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) 1.0~3.0 was observed during this period due to the influence of the long range transport of smoke aerosol plume from the Russian fires, resulting in short-wavelength direct aerosol radiative forcing of -90~ -200W/$m^2$. These smoke aerosol plume caused decrease in surface UV-B radiation up to 80% and increase in PM_(10) concentration up to 200${\mu}g/m^3$ exceeding the 24 hour ambient air quality standard.

  • Particulate matter (PM) affects the human, ecosystems, and weather. Motorized vehicles and combustion generate fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which can contain toxic substances and, therefore, requires systematic management. Consequently, it is important to monitor and predict PM2.5 concentrations, especially in large cities with dense populations and infrastructures. This study aimed to predict PM2.5 concentrations in large cities using meteorological and chemical variables as well as satellite-based aerosol optical depth. For PM2.5 concentrations prediction, a random forest (RF) model showing excellent performance in PM concentrations prediction among machine learning models was selected. Based on the performance indicators R2, RMSE, MAE, and MAPE with training accuracies of 0.97, 3.09, 2.18, and 13.31 and testing accuracies of 0.82, 6.03, 4.36, and 25.79 for R2, RMSE, MAE, and MAPE, respectively. The variables used in this study showed high correlation to PM2.5 concentrations. Therefore, we conclude that these variables can be used in a random forest model to generate reliable PM2.5 concentrations predictions, which can then be used to assess the vulnerability of schools to PM2.5.

  • This study evaluates the impact of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol optical depth (AOD) expected error (EE) on the accuracy of surface reflectance (SR) derived from the KOMPSAT-3A satellite, utilizing the Second Simulation of the Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum Vector radiative transfer model. By considering a range of ground-based AOD and the resultant MODIS AOD EE, the research identifies significant influences on SR accuracy, particularly under high solar zenith angles(SZA) and shorter wavelengths. The study's simulations reveal that SR errors increase with shorter wavelengths and higher SZAs, highlighting the necessity for further research to improve atmospheric correction algorithms by incorporating wavelength and SZA considerations. Additionally, the study provides foundational data for better understanding the use of AOD data from other satellites in atmospheric correction processes and contributes to advancing atmospheric correction technologies.

  • Through the operations of advanced geostationary meteorological satellite such as Himawari-8 and GK2A, higher resolution and frequency of AOD (Aerosol Optical Depth) data have become available. In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of Himawari-8/AHI (Advanced Himawari Imager) aerosol properties using the recent 4 years (2016~2019) of Sun photometer data observed at the five stations(Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, Anmyon island) which is a part of the AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network). In addition, we analyzed the causes for the AOD differences between Himawari AOD and Sun photometer AOD. The results showed that the two AOD data are very similar regardless of geographic location, in particular, for the clear condition (cloud amount < 3). However, the quality of Himawari AOD data is heavily degraded compared to that of the clear condition, in terms of bias (0.05 : 0.21), correlation (0.74 : 0.64) and RMSE (Root Mean Square Error; 0.21 : 0.51), when cloud amount is increased. In general, the large differences between two AOD data are mainly related to the cloud amount and relative humidity. The Himawari strongly overestimates the AOD at all five stations when cloud amount and relative humidity are large. However, the wind speed, precipitable water, height of cloud base and Angstrom Exponent have been shown to have no effect on the AOD differences irrespective of geographic location and cloud amount. The results suggest that caution is required when using Himawari AOD data in cloudy conditions.

  • Accurate correction of surface effect from back scattered solar radiance is one of key issue to retrieve aerosol information from satellite measurements. In this study, two different methods are applied to retrieve surface reflectance by using single visible channel measurement from meteorological imager onboard COMS. The first one is minimum reflectance method, which composes the minimum value among previously measured reflectances at each pixel over a certain search window length. This method assumes that the darkest pixel corresponds to the aerosol-free condition, and deduces surface reflectance by correcting atmospheric scattering from the measured visible reflectance. The second method, named as the "atmospheric correction method" in this study, estimates the result by correcting aerosol and atmospheric scattering with ground-based observation of aerosol optical properties. The purpose of this study is to investigate the retrieval accuracy of the widelyused minimum reflectance method. Also, the retrieval error caused by the loading of background aerosol is mainly estimated. The comparison between surface reflectances retrieved from the two methods shows good agreement with the correlation coefficient of 0.87. However, the results from the minimum reflectance method are slightly overestimated than the values from the atmospheric correction method when surface reflectance is lower than 0.2. The average difference between the two results is 0.012 without the background aerosol correction. By considering the background aerosol effect, however, the difference is reduced to 0.010.
