The impacts of aerosol loading on surface precipitation from mid-latitude deep convective systems are examined using a bin microphysics model. For this, a precipitation case over north central Mongolia, which is a high-altitude inland region, on 21 August 2014 is simulated with aerosol number concentrations of 150, 300, 600, 1200, 2400, and $4800cm^{-3}$. The surface precipitation amount slightly decreases with increasing aerosol number concentration in the range of $150-600cm^{-3}$, while it notably increases in the range of $600-4800cm^{-3}$ (22% increase with eightfold aerosol loading). We attempt to explain why the surface precipitation amount increases with increasing aerosol number concentration in the range of $600-4800cm^{-3}$. A higher aerosol number concentration results in more drops of small sizes. More drops of small sizes grow through condensation while being transported upward and some of them freeze, thus increasing the mass content of ice crystals. The increased ice crystal mass content leads to an increase in the mass content of small-sized snow particles largely through deposition, and the increased mass content of small-sized snow particles leads to an increase in the mass content of large-sized snow particles largely through riming. In addition, more drops of small sizes increase the mass content of supercooled drops, which also leads to an increase in the mass content of large-sized snow particles through riming. The increased mass content of large-sized snow particles resulting from these pathways contributes to a larger surface precipitation amount through melting and collision-coalescence.
An algorithm was developed to retrieve both cloud optical thickness and effective particle radius considered the aerosol effect on clouds. This study apply the algorithm of Nakajima and Nakajima (1995) that is used to retrieve cloud optical thickness and effective particle radius from visible, near infrared satellite spectral measurements. To retrieve cloud properties, Look-up table (LUT) was made under different atmospheric conditions by using a radiative transfer model. Especially the vertical distribution of aerosol is based on a tropospheric aerosol profile in radiative transfer model. In the case study, we selected the extensive forest fire occurred in Russia in May 2003. The aerosol released from this fire may be transported to Korea. Cloud properties obtained from these distinct atmospheric situations are analysed in terms of their possible changes due to the interactions of the clouds with the aerosol particle plumes. Cloud properties over the East sea at this time was retrieved using new algorithm. The algorithm is applied to measurements from the MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) onboard the Terra spacecrafts. As a result, cloud effective particle radius was decreased and cloud optical thickness was increased during aerosol event. Specially, cloud effective particle radius is hardly greater than $20{\mu}m$ when aerosol particles were present over the East Sea. Clouds developing in the aerosol event tend to have more numerous but smaller droplets.
This study compares the results of collection efficiency of difference gas temperature in cyclone dust collector. The previous researcher's experiment results were used to confirm the reliability of CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) model. Based on this verified CFD model, we extended the analysis on the cyclone dust collectors. In CFD study, we used RNG k-epsilon model for analysis of turbulence flow, fluid is air, the velocity at inlet is 10 m/s, the temperature of air is $20^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$. As the temperature decreases, the average velocity of outer vortex and collection efficiency is increased, showed the highest collection efficiency at $20^{\circ}C$. It can be inferred smooth flow in cyclone dust collector is difficult because air viscosity increases as temperature increases. The power required at $1000^{\circ}C$ is almost 18 times greater than that of $20^{\circ}C$ to get the similar collection efficiency.
Remote sensing of atmospheric aerosol using MODIS satellite data has been proven to be very useful in global/regional scale aerosol monitoring. Due to their large spatial resolution of $10km^2$ MODIS aerosol optical thickness (AOT) data have limitations for local/urban scale aerosol monitoring applications. Modified Bremen Aerosol Retrieval (BAER) algorithm developed by von Hoyningen-Huene et al. (2003) and Lee et al. (2005) has been applied in this study to retrieve AOT in fe resolutions of $500m^2$ over Korea. Look up tables (LUTs) were constructed from the aerosol properties based on sun-photometer observation and radiation transfer model calculations. It was found that relative error between the satellite products and the ground observations was within about $15\%$. Resulting AOT products were correlated with surface PMIO concentration data. There was good correlation between MODIS AOT and surface PM concentration under certain atmospheric conditions, which supports the feasibility of using the high-resolution MODIS AOT for local and urban scale air quality monitoring
Due to the fact that the composition and variability of aerosols is considered rather complex, it is difficult to employ a simple and straightforward physical model in calculating the aerosol size distribution in the absence of actual data. This complicates the already difficult retrieval of various atmospheric parameters from remotely sensed data. Thus, the main purpose of this study is trying to find an effective aerosol size coefficient that is stable, and can depict the particle size distribution. This paper also attempts to construct an 'effective aerosol size coefficient' database for each respective season, where it can quickly and effectively supply pertinent information of the atmosphere's opacity.

A semi-empirical method to determine the electrostatic characteristics of a diode type corona aerosol charger based on ion current measurement and electrostatic charging theory was presented. Results from mathematical model were in agreement with those from experimental investigation of the charger. Current-voltage characteristics, $N_{i}t$ product and charge distribution against aerosol size were obtained. It was shown that the space charge was significant and must be taken into account at high ion number concentration and low flow rate. Additionally, significant particle loss was evident for particles smaller than 20 nm in diameter where their electrical mobility was high. Increase in charging efficiency may be achieved by introducing surrounding sheath flow and applying AC high voltage. Overall, the approach was found to be useful in characterizing the aerosol charger.
Under nuclear reactor severe accidents, the resuspension of radioactive aerosol may occur in the containment due to the disturbing airflow generated by hydrogen combustion, hydrogen explosion and containment depressurization resulting in the increase of radioactive source term in the containment. In this paper, for containment conditions, by considering the contact between particle and rough deposition surface, the distribution of the distance between two contact points of particle and deposition surface, rolling and lifting separation mechanism, resuspension model based on random contact with rough surface (RRCR) is established. Subsequently, the detailed torque and force analysis is carried out, which indicates that particles are more easily resuspended by rolling under low disturbing airflow velocity. The simulation result is compared with the experimental result and the prediction of different simulation methods, the RRCR model shows equivalent and better predictive ability, which can be applicable for simulation of aerosol resuspension in containment during severe accident.

In order to understand the relative importance of various pathways leading to the production and transformation of aerosols under different atmospheric conditions, the behavior of atmospheric aerosols have been investigated using a high volume tape sample in Seoul for a week period during August 1990. The concentrations of anion $(SO^{2-}_4, NO^-_3, CI^-)$ and cation $(Ca^{2+}, Na^+, NH^+_4)$ species of aerosol samples were analyzed to identify the ionic composition of aerosols and to estimate their relative contributions to aerosol formation. The concentrations of aerosol species were calculated by a multiple regression model. The results of our calculations indicate the existence of various chemical species such as $(NH_4)_2SO_4, Na_2SO_4, CaSO_4, NH_4NO_3, NaNO_3, Ca(NO_3)_2, NH_4Cl$, and NaCl salts. According to our calculations, the most dominant species of aerosol was $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ with the mean concentration of 23.3 $/mu g/m^3$ (66.9%). The proportion of different componts with aerosol (e.g., $NH_4NO_3$ and $NH_4Cl$) was strongly affected by temperature, relative humidity, and partial presure of gases.
Determining 'photosynthetically active radiation' (PAR) is a key part of calculating phytoplankton productivity in a biogeochemical model. We explore the daily and seasonal variability in the ratio of PAR irradiance to total irradiance that occurred at Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) in the East China Sea under clear-sky conditions in 2004 using a simple radiative transfer model (RTM). Meteorological data observed at IORS and aerosol optical properties derived from Aerosol Robotic Network observations at Gosan are used for the RTM. Preliminary results suggest that the use of simple PAR irradiance-ratio values is appropriate in calculating phytoplankton productivity as follows: an average of $0.44\;({\pm}0.01)$ in January to an average of $0.48\;({\pm}0.01)$ in July, with average daily variabilities over these periods of about $0.016\;({\pm}0.008)$ and $0.025\;({\pm}0.008)$, respectively. The model experiments demonstrate that variations in the major controlling input parameters (i.e. solar zenith angle, precipitable water vapor and aerosol optical thickness) cause PAR irradiance ratio variation at daily and seasonal timescales. Further, increases (>0.012) in the PAR irradiance ratio just below the sea-surface are positively correlated with high solar zenith angles and strong wind stresses relative to those just above the sea-surface.
Using 30 days of hourly visible channel data and DIScrete Ordinate Radiative Transfer (DISORT) model (6S), Aerosol optical depth (AOD) at $0.55{\mu}m$ was retrieved over the East Asia. In contrast with the AOD retrieval using low-earth-orbit satellites such as MODIS (Moderate-Res olution Spectroradiometer) or MISR (Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer), this algorithm with geostationary satellite can improve the monitoring of AOD without the limitation of temporal resolution. Due to the limited number of channels in the conventional meteorological imager onboard the geostationary satellite, an AOD retrieval algorithm utilizing a single visible channel has been introduced. This single channel algorithm has larger retrieval error of AOD than other multiple-channel algorithm due to errors in surface reflectance and atmospheric property. In this study, the effects of manifold atmospheric and surface properties on the retrieval of AOD from the geostationary satellite, are investigated and compared with the AODs from AERONET and MODIS. To improve the accuracy of retrieved AOD, efforts were put together to minimize uncertainties through extensive sensitivity tests. This algorithm can be utilized to retrieve aerosol information from previous geostationary satellite for long-term climate studies.
