  • The electrical conduction mechanism of high dielectric $(Ba,Sr)TiO_3$ (BST) thin film capacitor, which is the promising cell capacitor for high density DRAM, was investigated in low field region (<0.2MV/cm). It is known that the current in the low field region consists of dielectric relaxation current and leakage current. The current-time (I-t) measurement technique under the constant voltage was used for extracting successfully each current component. The conduction mechanism of the BST capacitor was deduced from the dependency of the current on the measurement temperature, strength of electric field, the polarity of applied electric field and post annealing process. From these results, it was suggested that the dielectric relaxation current and the leakage current are originated from the redistribution of internally trapped electron by hopping process and Pool-Frenkel conduction mechanism, respectively. It was also concluded that traps causing these two current components are due to oxygen vacancies within the BST film.

  • The indentation technique has been one of the most commonly used techniques for the measurement of the mechanical properties of materials due to its experimental ease and speed. Recently, the scope of indentation has been enlarged down to the nanometer range through the development of instrumentations capable of continuously measuring load and displacement. In addition to testing hardness, the elastic modulus of submicron area could be measured from an indentation load-displacement (P-h) curve. In this study, the hardness values of the constituent phases in Ti($C_{0.7}N_{0.3}$)-NbC-Ni cermets were evaluated by nanoindentation. SEM observation of the indented surface was indispensable in order to separate the hardness of each constituent phase since the Ti($C_{0.7}N_{0.3}$)-based cermets have relatively inhomogeneous microstructure. The measured values of hardness using nanoindentation were ${\sim}20$ GPa for hard phase and ${\sim}10$ GPa for binder phase. The effect of NbC addition on hardness was not obvious in this work.

  • Effects of specimen area on the corrosion rate of low alloy steel were studied in sulfuric acid solution. The corrosion behavior of specimen was tested by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), linear polarization resistance measurement (LPR) and potentiodynamic polarization measurement. The surface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron probe X-ray micro analyzer (EPMA). As surface area was increased, corrosion rate was increased by the effect of small anode-large cathode.

  • The plasma density is an essential plasma parameter describing plasma physics. Furthermore, it affects the throughput and uniformity of plasma processing (etching, deposition, ashing, etc). Therefore, a novel technique for plasma density measurement has been attracting considerable attention. Microwave probe is a promising diagnostic technique. Various type of cutoff, hairpin, impedance, transmission, and absorption probes have been developed and investigated. Recently, based on the basic type of probes, modified flat probe (curling and multipole probes), have been developing for in situ processing plasma monitoring. There is a need for comparative study between the probes. It can give some hints on choosing the reliable probe and application of the probes. In this presentation, we make attempt of numerical study of different kinds of microwave probes. Characteristics of frequency spectrum from probes were analyzed by using three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation. The plasma density, obtained from the spectrum, was compared with simulation input plasma density. The different microwave probe behavior with changes of plasma density, sheath and pressure were found. To confirm the result experimentally, we performed the comparative experiment between cutoff and hairpin probes. The sheath and collision effects are corrected for each probe. The results were reasonably interpreted based on the above simulation.

  • Even though the blood pressure is one of the most widely used index for the healthcare monitoring of hypertensive and normotensive persons, there is no non-intrusive measurement method which is commercialized until now. Pulse Arrival Time (PAT) is known that it has close relation with the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and arterial stiffness. In this study, SBP estimation methods by non-intrusive measurement of PAT are suggested. For the unconstrained measurement of PAT, the first method used the electrically non contact electrocardiogram (ENC-ECG) technique and the reflective type of Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor on the computer mouse. In the second method, ENC-ECG and the air pressure sensor in the seat cushion on a chair were measured. The third method used ECG electrodes and PPG sensors on the toilet seat cover. The validation and regression analysis of the relationship of PAT and SBP are summarized. These methods have considerable errors to be used for all people. But these can be applied for each subject after the parameter customization within acceptable error. So, it is feasible for suggested methods to be used for monitoring of SBP in daily life in non-intrusive way when there is personal identification system of each subject.

  • The method of accumulating a sequence of focused images is usually used for reconstruction of 3D object\\`s shape. To acquire a focused image, the conventional methods must calculate the focus measures of all pixels resulting in a long measurement time. This paper proposes a new method of reducing the computation time spent for deciding the focused pixels in the input image, which predicts the area in the image to calculate the focus measure based on a priori information on the object to be measured. The proposed algorithm estimates the area to consider in the next measurement based on the focused area in the present measurement. As the focus measure, Laplacian measure was used in this paper and the experiments have shown that the preposed algorithm may significantly reduce the calculation time. Although, as implied, this algorithm can be applied to only simple objects at this stage, advanced representation schemes will eliminate the restrictions on application domain.

  • During the process of excavation for substructures of buildings, precise and constant measurements of retaining wall displacement is crucial for construction to be complete and safe. Currently an inclinometer is used to measure displacement around the perimeter of an excavation site. The existing inclinometer system requires an instrument to be placed inside pre-bored holes for each measurement with an typical interval of two weeks. This makes it difficult to obtain continuous displacement data, especially during a critical time such as rainy season in summer. Also, the existing inclinometer is placed at certain distance away from the retaining wall system itself. Thus, exact measurement of retaining wall movement is compromised because of the distance between the retaining wall and the inclinometer. This paper presents the development of wireless inclinometer system for the displacement measurement of retaining walls by being attached directly to the retaining wall. The result of the application of the developed systems are provided with advanced ubiquitous sensor network (USN) system features. The USN technique incorporated into the system enables users to monitor movement data from wherever possible and convenient such as construction manager's office on site or any other places connected through internet. The research work presented in this paper will provide a basis to save construction time and cost by preventing safe-related unexpected delay of construction due to the failure or collapse of retaining walls.

  • We describe a new way of implementing absolute displacement measurements by exploiting the optical comb of a femtosecond pulse laser as a wavelength ruler, The optical comb is stabilized by locking both the repetition rate and the carrier offset frequency to an Rb clock of frequency standard. Multiwavelength interferometry is then performed using the quasi-monochromatic beams of well-defined generated wavelengths by tuning an external cavity laser diode consecutively to preselected light modes of the optical comb. This scheme of wavelength synthesizing allows the measurement of absolute distances with a high precision that is traceable to the definition of time. The achievable wavelength uncertainty is $1.9{\times}10^{-10}$, which allows the absolute heights of gauge blocks to be determined with an overall calibration uncertainty of 15 nm (k = 1). These results demonstrate a successful industrial application of an optical frequency synthesis employing a femtosecond laser, a technique that offers many possibilities for performing precision length metrology that is traceable to the well-defined international definition of time.

  • Reduction in pollution performance of polymeric insulators, aged due to water absorption stress and thermal stress, is a major threat to the reliable operation of power transmission and distribution system. Formation of partial discharges on the surface of wet polluted insulator plays a major role in determining the life time and pollution performance of outdoor polymeric insulators. However, reports on partial discharge characteristics of water absorption stress aged and thermal aged polymeric insulators are scanty. This paper discusses the pollution performance characteristics of accelerated aged polymeric insulators using the advanced ultra wide band PD signal measurement and analysis. Laboratory experiments on accelerated aged polymeric insulators were carried out as per IEC 60507 under AC voltage, at different humidity and contamination levels using NaCl as a contaminant. PRPD pattern and Time-Frequency map analysis of PD signals were carried out. From the results, it can be speculated that PD analysis is a well suited technique to understand the pollution performance of aged polymeric insulators.

  • This paper describes a three dimensional profile measurement method for sheet metal products which have flexible and porous sculptured surfaces. Shadow masks are used as measuring objects for practical implementation or this study. The shadow masks are located inside the fluorescent glasses of monitors for televisions or computers and used to prevent electron guns from interfering between pixels. Three dimen- sional surface profiles are measured by adopting a software autofocusing technique to capture focused images. The experimental results show that the method is very effecive and suitable for sheet meal prod- ucts with flexible and porous surfaces.
