This study was conducted to examine the effects of care farming activities on the brain waves of adults with developmental disabilities from September 2022 to December 2022, with a total of 16 sessions held once a week. For 28 adults with developmental disabilities, 15 participants in the care farm program and 13 participants who did not participate were used as the control group. Before and after the care farming activities, participants' self-esteem, happiness levels, and brain function indices were measured through surveys and electroencephalography (EEG). Consequently, the self-esteem of the participants in the experimental group significantly increased after the activity, and as for the brain function index, the left brain activity index related to stress, attention, brain function, and emotional state increased compared to the control group in the experimental group of adults with developmental disabilities, especially intellectual disabilities. Notably, the effect of care farming activities was greater for women than for men with intellectual disabilities. Therefore, considering the differential effects of care farming activities based on the type of developmental disability and sex, it is deemed advantageous to primarily apply these activities to women with intellectual disabilities in order to maximize the healing effect of care farming.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the gait patterns of adults with intellectual disability and healthy adults based on collected kinematic data on the lower extremities and to investigate the gait patterns of intellectually disabled people by comparing the differences between the two groups. Methods: The participants were divided into in one group of healthy adults (n = 9) and one group with mild intellectual disabilities (n = 9). 3D motion analysis (Myomotion) was used to collect kinematic data from each group while the participants walked 3 times over 10 m. As a statistical method, each group's kinematic data during walking was analyzed and compared using an independent sample t-test. Results: Comparing the kinematic data of the lower extremities during walking between the group with mild intellectual disability and the healthy group, there were significant differences between the two groups in the hip and ankle joints in the stance and swing phases. Conclusion: The analysis suggests that people with intellectual disabilities have kinematic differences compared with healthy people. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to conduct further research on rehabilitation programs for joint stabilization, exercise for increasing joint range of motion, muscle strengthening exercise, and proprioception training for people with intellectual disabilities with insufficient physical function.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of training using the slime on the hand function and problem behavior in adults with intellectual disabilities. Methods: Five adults with intellectual disabilities who were judged as Level 1 or Level 2 were selected. The training consisted of one session (50 min)/day, one day/week for 10 weeks (preparatory activities: 5 min, slime activities: 40 min, finishing activities: 5 min) The functions of the hand (Purdue Pegboard Test [PPT], grip strength test [GST]) and problem behavior (Korean Behavior Problems Inventory [KBPI]) were assessed three times (first assessment; pre, second assessment; post-5 weeks, third assessment; post-10 weeks). Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to analyze changes in the subjects' performance before and after the intervention. Results: In the PPT, the use of the non-dominant hand was increased significantly (p<0.05). No significant differences were observed in the remaining results, but the mean value increased. In addition, although the problem behavior was not statistically significant, an increase in the problem behavior score was noted. Conclusion: The training using the slime for adults with intellectual disabilities is effective in hand function improvement and reducing problem behavior.
Purpose: People with intellectual disabilities are vulnerable to the use of receptive and expressive vocabulary. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on the receptive vocabulary and the expressive vocabulary after teaching reading education to adults with intellectual disabilities living in facilities using picture fairy tales. Methods: The subjects of this study were 12 adults with intellectual disabilities under the age of 20 to 40 residing in residential facilities. They were divided into 6 test groups and 6 control groups, and gave a total of 12 sessions of 60 minutes per session, and reading instruction using picture fairy tales. Results: In the test group that conducted reading activities using picture fairy tales, the use of the receptive vocabulary was significantly improved, and the use of the expressive vocabulary was significantly improved. There were no significant results in all of the control groups. Conclusions: This study had the effect of improving the use of receptive vocabulary and expressive vocabulary after teaching reading using picture fairy tales for the disabled. It is estimated that this result will be the basis for research in this field.
The purpose of this study was to compare adults' with intellectual disabilities voice pitch between who have choir experiences and those who do not. Participants were a total of 21 male adults with intellectual disabilities (12 choir group members and 9 non-choir group). Praat test was conducted to compare the characteristics of pitch, produced by the participants while they were singing in their comfortable pitch range. The results showed that the range of melodic contour in the choir group was broader and higher than those of the non choir group. Participants in the choir group produced a lower pitch in the beginning note, and they produced a higher pitch compared to the non-choir group on the highest and lowest note of the song. An analysis on the pitch of the individual note that the participants produced revealed a gap between the expected pitch notes and the actual notes produced while singing. In all syllables of the song, participants in the choir group showed higher accuracy of the pitch production, and significantly more accurate on the perfect fifth and eighth intervals. Regarding to the relative pitch, participants in the choir group produced significantly more accurate notes on perfect fifth, perfect fourth, and perfect eighth intervals. Findings of the study suggest that constant singing experience enable them to have pitch training. It also implies for further studies regarding to singing abilities of adults with intellectual disabilities.
In order to find out perception of group home for the people with disabilities worker on sexual behavior of adults with developmental disabilities in a holistic way, This study conducted in-depth interviews with six research participants using Giorgi's phenomenological study method to understand the meaning of perception of sexual behavior of adults with developmental disabilities. According to data analysis, these experiences appeared as two thematic themes: 'sexual trouble behavior' and 'perception of sexuality'. Two sub-themes of 'Excessive expression of sexual desire', 'Improper sexual behavior that can lead to sexual offenses' were derived from the essence theme of 'sexually problematic behavior' and 'perception of sexuality' were derived from the essence theme of 'lack of suitable solution', 'conditions that are not enough to have sex appeal', 'frustrated sexuality', 'some dilemma problem', 'sexuality that is not different from non-disabled', and 'love and sex are ok, pregnancy and marriage are no'. Based on this, group home caregivers contribute to their role as the main agents who reinforce and reproduce the sexual norms of adults with intellectual disabilities, while at the same time they experience confusion in their values about sexual norms of people with intellectual disabilities. Based on the results, We discusses the major intervention plan for education programs to enhance the competences of group home caregivers in order to form a holistic perspective of group home caregivers in sexuality of people with intellectual disabilities, and provide rational solutions.
The purpose of this study is to examine the determinant factors of maintaining employment in young adults with intellectual disabilities who took part in a vocational training program and was employed. The determinant factors were from four areas, such as physical competence, job-related task performance, emotional behaviors, and functional adaptive behaviors. 64 young adults with intellectual disabilities participated in this study. The participants' capacities were examined during the program, and then their job retention was examined through a follow-up survey six month after the end of the program. Tests contained hand dexterity, grasp strength, finger strength, visual-perception, Survey of Functional Adaptive Behaviors, and Observational-Emotional Inventory-Revised. After data collection, the data were analyzed by binary logistic regression. The results indicated that dexterity in both hands (OR= 1.123) in physical competence, anxiety (OR= .733) and socialization (OR= .429) in emotional behaviors, and academic skills (OR= 1.077) and vocational skills (OR= 1.542) in functional adaptive behaviors were significant determinant factors. These significant factors which affected job attention were consistent with the results from previous studies, and should be considered when designing and constructing an effective career and vocational education program for young adults with intellectual disabilities.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of therapeutic horse riding on adult with intellectual disability in terms of adaptive behavior. The subjects were 16 adults with intellectual disability. They participated in a therapeutic horse riding program of 60 minutes long, Twice a week for 12 weeks. The participants' adaptive behavior level were measured before and after 12 weeks of program with Social Maturity Scale. The data was analyzed by paired t-test using the SPSS. After 12 weeks of therapeutic horse riding program, there was a significant improvements on self-help, task, self-regulation & socialization. However, locomotion, communication changes did not reach statistical significance. The result indicates that therapeutic horse riding has a positive effect on adults with intellectual disability in self-help, task, self-regulation & socialization. This study suggests that therapeutic horse riding could be considered an effective method on adults with intellectual disability to improve adaptive behavior.
The purpose of this study was to examine the sensory processing of adults with intellectual disabilities by Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile(AASP). AASP was executed for 98 adults with intellectual disabilities residing in nursing home. The score of sensory processing ability expressed the conditions of being 'Less Than Most People' and 'Much Less Than Most People' in the all sensory processing areas of Low Registration, Sensory Sensitivity, Sensory Seeking, Sensory Avoiding. There was not significant difference in the sex. The score of sensory processing ability between teenagers(11 years to 17 years) and adult(above 18 years), teenagers statistically showed lower scores in the three sensory processing areas of Low Registration, Sensory Seeking, and Sensory Sensitivity. In addition, there was significant difference in the sensory processing areas of Low Registration and Sensory Avoiding according to the disability grading. In the future research, it is suggested to examine the sensory processing within residual setting and it need a study comparing sensory processing skills according to the disability grading by increasing subjects.
