  • PURPOSE: This study was conducted to provide evidence-based recommendations for customized interventions by identifying the incidence of low grip strength (LGS) in an elderly population in Korea. METHODS: Adults over 65 years of age were selected as subjects using the data from 2016-2018 of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey provided by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of the 24,269 subjects who participated in the survey, 19,313, 533, and 2664 participants who were under the age of 65, did not take the grip strength test, and did not take the health survey, respectively, were excluded. Finally, 1,759 subjects were selected. RESULTS: The incidence rate of LGS was 30.27%: 22.82% in men and 38.48% in women. The related factors of LGS had a high risk of occurrence of old age, low education level, low BMI, alcohol status, aerobic and muscle strength exercise, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). CONCLUSION: This study provided basic data for introducing health promotion policies to improve the grip strength of the elderly in consideration of related factors affecting LGS.

  • The geriatric population is at a greater risk of postoperative complications than young adults. This risk is associated with the physiologic decline seen in this population known as frailty. Unlike fitter patients, frail patients who undergo operative treatment have a greater likelihood of developing postoperative complications and endure prolonged hospital stays. This circumstance is comparable to the urological status. Therefore, tolerable measurement of frailty as a domain of preoperative health status has been suggested to ascertain vulnerability in elderly patients. In this review, we will elaborate on the concept of frailty and examine its importance with respect to surgical complications, focusing on the urological status.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the association between oral health and suicide attempts in adults aged 65 years or older using the 7th Korea National Health and Examination Survey (KHANES, 2016-2018). Methods: Of the total 24,269 participants of the 7th KHANES (2016-2018), 1,488 adults aged 65 years or older who had an oral health examination were selected. Variations in suicide attempts with demographic characteristics and perceived oral health status were analyzed using the χ2 test, and the association between oral health and suicide attempts was analyzed using the logistic regression model. Results: The suicide attempt rate was higher among older adults with chewing (p<0.01) and speaking (p<0.05) difficulties. The odds ratio for a suicide attempt was 1.05 times higher among those with tooth loss (p<0.05). Conclusions: Our results showed that older adults with tooth loss had an increased risk of suicide. Thus, it is important to prevent tooth loss, in the first place, through proper oral health management. If tooth loss occurs, appropriate treatment should be prioritized to facilitate functional recovery. Finally, national support is required for older adults with limited access to dental care.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the effect of cognitive impairment on the association between social network properties and mortality among older Korean adults. Methods: This study used data from the Korean Social Life, Health, and Aging Project. It obtained 814 older adults' complete network maps across an entire village in 2011-2012. Participants' deaths until December 31, 2020 were confirmed by cause-of-death statistics. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess the risks of poor social network properties (low degree centrality, perceived loneliness, social non-participation, group-level segregation, and lack of support) on mortality according to cognitive impairment. Results: In total, 675 participants (5510.4 person-years) were analyzed, excluding those with missing data and those whose deaths could not be verified. Along with cognitive impairment, all social network properties except loneliness were independently associated with mortality. When stratified by cognitive function, some variables indicating poor social relations had higher risks among older adults with cognitive impairment, with adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of 2.12 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.34 to 3.35) for social nonparticipation, 1.58 (95% CI, 0.94 to 2.65) for group-level segregation, and 3.44 (95% CI, 1.55 to 7.60) for lack of support. On the contrary, these effects were not observed among those with normal cognition, with adjusted HRs of 0.73 (95% CI, 0.31 to 1.71), 0.96 (95% CI, 0.42 to 2.21), and 0.95 (95% CI, 0.23 to 3.96), respectively. Conclusions: The effect of social network properties was more critical among the elderly with cognitive impairment. Older adults with poor cognitive function are particularly encouraged to participate in social activities to reduce the risk of mortality.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of task presentation methods (animation vs. picture) on verb naming abilities as a function of verb argument structures for normal elderly adults. Participants were categorized into the two groups: animation group(n=21) vs. picture group(n=21). Data for the animation group were from obtained from Sung and Choi (2012). Percent of accuracy for the verb naming task served as a dependent measure for statistical analyses. After the years of education was controlled as a covariate, a two-way mixed ANOVA was performed with the group as a between-subject factor and the argument structure(1-, 2-, and 3-place) as a within-subject factor. Results revealed that there was a significant interaction between the group and argument structure, whereas there were no main effects for either of the factors. The animation group performed better than the picture group for one-place verb, whereas the opposite pattern was observed for the three-place verbs. The results suggested that the presentation methods are one of the critical factors that influenced verb naming abilities in elderly adults.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to examine disparities in food and nutrient intakes based on family types identified among 1,856 participants who were the Korean elderly people in the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES) excluding those who were currently practicing the diet therapy. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We separated the subjects into two groups: living alone (LA, n = 638) and living with a spouse (LS, n = 1,218). We also examined the disparities of dietary quantity and quality of those two groups using complex sampling design general linear regression analyses (CS GLM). RESULTS: In the LA group, there was a higher percentage of females and average age in LA group was higher than the participants in the LS group. Household income and education level were significantly lower in LA compared to those of LS. The frequencies of skipping meals were higher in LA. LA's food and nutrient intakes showed lower consumption of vegetables, fruits, seaweeds, and of most nutrients. Even after adjusting for the confounding factors, the consumption of vegetables, seaweeds, carbohydrates, potassium, riboflavin, and vitamin C showed lower in LA than LS. Moreover, LA's nutrient intake ratios compared to the KDRIs were lower which turned out to be similar to their nutrient intakes. CONCLUSIONS: These results show that dietary behavior and food intake of the elderly are associated with family types. Frequently skipping meals and less dietary variety are more common with elderly persons who were living alone. Therefore, it is necessary to integrate the supplementary food programs and nutrition education programs for the elderly living alone.
