Recently much attention is paid on the interest in putting Korean traditional clothes into practical use with reviewing a traditional culture. Thus, this study was made of clarifying the difference from sex and group by investigating morderns' consciousness, manner, purchasing and wearing state of Korean traditional dress. - It shows that since about the half of the person inquired doesn't wear the clothes once in a year, its frequency of wearing is very low. - The main reason for not wearing that clothes is due to its uneasiness of wearing. - In purchasing the clothes, color, tinning, quality of the clothes are important in order, and bright and luxurious colors are much favored. - About the half of the inquired possess that clothes, with most of them having about one or two dresses. - In a sort of their possession, man has Jeogori and Baji etc. and woman has only Chima, Jeogori and Sochima, or so. - It shows that while their interest in Korean traditional clothes is high, the interest in its practical wearing point of view is low. - In case of adult, interest in that clothes is relatively high in comparison with other group.
The embryological and anatomical features of urachal anomalies have been well defined. Because of the variable clinical presentation, uniform guideline for evaluation and treatment are lacking. Although urachal remnants are rarely observed clinically, they often give rise to a number of problems such as infection and late malignant changes. Therefore, a total assessment of the disease with a particular focus on embryology, anatomy, clinical symptoms, as well as the most advisable management, is necessary. Twenty six patients with urachal remnants were treated at the Department of Pediatric Surgery from August 1980 to June 1998. Of these 26, 9 were classified as patent urachus 11 as urachal sinus, 4 as urachal cyst, 1 as urachal diverticulum and 1 as an alternating sinus. The group consisted of 11 males and 15 females. The age distribution was 20 neonates, 3 infants, 2 preschoolers and 1 adult. Infection was the most frequent complication and Staph. aureus was the predominant causative microorganism. Fistulogram was performed in 4 cases and ultrasound examination disclosed cysts or sinus in 7 cases. Excision was performed in 24 patients and incision and draniage in 2 cases as a primary treatment. There was no postopreative complication or recurrence.
Moyamoya disease is defined as the development of collateral pathways, associated with bilateral chronic progressive stenosis of the carotid fork. Persistent trigeminal artery is the vessel most frequently observed to persist into adult life among persistent carotid-basilar and carotid-vertebral anastomotic vessels. The authors present a man who had a sudden, severe headache and brain CT showed subarachnoid hemorrhage in left interpeduncular and prepontine cistern. Four-vessel angiogram revealed moyamoya disease associated with aneurysm arising from the junction of persistent trigeminal artery aneurysm and basilar artery. As a treatment, coil embolization was tried but it was failed because of anatomical difficulty of aneurysm. The aneurysm was successfully treated with clipping surgery 10 days later. To our knowledge, this is the first case being reported.
This study was accomplished to investigate the recognition and the using practices about food-nutrition labeling system of 20's consumers. Two hundred and fifty-four man and women were examined using the questionnaire. The results were as follows. 1. The degree of recognition of subjects about food-nutrition labeling system was low (43.3%) and the using practices were even lower (18.1%). 2. The items considered as important were in the order of shelf life, manufactured date and cost. 3. The confidence score to the food-nutrition labeling system of consumers was 3.2 and was higher in the females compared to males. 4. The preferred method of food-nutrition labeling was in the order of picture and graphic type method, table type method and descriptive type method. 5. The expected effects of the current food-nutrition labeling system were easy to select foods for the prevention of the adult diseases and diet therapy. From these results, we might propose the conclusion as follows: Food-nutrition labeling system might be a good source of nutrition information and the consumers'demand for disease-prevention and dietary purpose. Therefore, the agencies concerned should make an every effort for the successful implementation of food-nutrition labeling system.
Purpose: This study was done to evaluate the effects of psychosocial interventions on cortisol and immune response in adult patients with cancer. Methods: MEDLINE via PubMed, Cochrane Library CENTRAL, EMBASE, CINAHL and domestic electronic databases were searched. Twenty controlled trials (11 randomized and 9 non-randomized trials) met the inclusion criteria with a total of 862 participants. Methodological quality was assessed using the Cochrane's Risk of Bias for randomized studies and the Risk of Bias Assessment tool for non randomized studies. Data were analyzed using the RevMan 5.2.11 program of Cochrane library. Results: Overall, study quality was moderate to high. The weighted average effect size across studies was -0.32 (95% CI [-0.56, -0.07], p=.010, $I^2 $=45%) for cortisol concentration, -0.62 (95%CI [-0.96,-0.29], p<.001, $I^2 $=0%) for T lymphocyte (CD3) and -0.45 (95%CI [-0.74, -0.16], p=.003, $I^2 $=0%) for Th lymphocyte (CD4) numbers. Psychosocial interventions were not effective for Tc lymphocyte (CD4), NK cell, monocyte, and cytokine response. Conclusion: Although these results provide only small evidence of successful immune modulation, they support the conclusion that psychosocial interventions can assist cancer patients in reducing emotional distress and improving immune response.
The study was attempted to scrutinize the normal osmotic fragility of erythrocytes in domestic poultry such as chicken, quail and duck, making a comparison with that in domestic mammalia such as dog and pig. Osmotic fragility of erythrocytes was determined on blood samples from 10 healthy adult animals in each species. Optical initial hemolysis of erythrocytes occurred at $0.395{\pm}0.03%$ NaCl for chicken, $0.410{\pm}0.03%$ for duck, $0.440{\pm}0.02%$ for quail, $0.470{\pm}0.05%$ for dog and $0.560{\pm}0.03%$ for pig. Optical complete hemolysis of erythrocytes occurred at $0.270{\pm}0.02%$ NaCl for chicken, $0.305{\pm}0.03%$ for duck, $0.360{\pm}0.02%$ for quail, $0.370{\pm}0.03%$ for dog and $0.455{\pm}0.03%$ for pig. In other words, erythrocytes of poultry have stronger resistance to osmotic lysis than those of mammalia, showing the strongest resistance in chicken among the tested poultry.
In order to investigate the effect of ANP on surfactant secretion from alveolar type II cell(AT II cell) during circulatory derangement in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), the secretion of surfactant from AT II cells was evaluated in purely isolated AT II cultures from rat lungs. For the simulation of sympathetic stimulation during circulatory derangement, primary AT II cultures were incubatedwith isoproterenol and IBMX. In this isoproterenol stimulated AT II cells, ANP were added in the media for the investigation of effect of ANP on surfactant secretion from AT II cells. For the evaluation of surfactant secretion, $[^3H]-methylcholine$ was incorporated and the level of radiolabelled choline chloride secreted from the cells was determined. As previously reported, isoproterenol and IBMX stimulated surfactant secretion from AT II cells. Isoproterenol showed synergistic increase of surfactant secretion with IBMX in AT II cells. In isoproterenol stimulated AT II cells, physiological level of ANP inhibited the secretion of surfactant in primary cultures of AT II cells. On the basis of these experimental it is suggested that, in association with ciculatory change during ARDS, increased secretion of ANP by the pulmonary edema, hypoxia and congestive heart heart failure might aggravate the symptoms of ARDS by reduction of surfactant secretion from AT II cells.
Primary cerebellar glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a rare tumor in adults that accounts for just 1% of all cases of GBM. Due to their rarity, cerebellar GBMs are not yet completely understood about the pathogenesis and the prognosis. Here, we present a case of GBM in a 69-year-old man. Neurologic examination revealed the presence of cerebellar signs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a 4.5${\times}$3.6 cm-sized, ill-defined, heterogeneously enhancing mass in the left cerebellum and two patchy hyperintense lesions in the right cerebellum with minimal enhancement. After operation, glioblastoma was histologically confrimed. Postoperative radiotherapy with concomittent and adjuvant temozolomide chemotherapy was subsequently followed. Here, a case of unusual GBM in the cerebellum is reported with review of literature regarding the pathogenesis, the differential diagnosis and prognosis. There was no evidence of recurrence during postoperative one year. This patient showed a good prognosis in spite of the multiple lesions.
As a study to elucidate whether taste buds contain specific proteins, rat dorsal lingual epithelium was analysed by electrophoresis. The epithelium of the vallate papilla (with numerous taste buds), the area of the fungiform papilla 9with a few taste buds), and the area between vallate papilla and large filiform papilla (not containing taste buds) were strippled off by treatment with 0.7% EDTA. The epithelial protein was extracted by 1% SDS and 1% Mercaptoethanol in 0.01M phosphate buffer (pH7.2). Extracts were analysed by disc SDS-PAGE. Because the patterns of protein composition from each site were similar with each other as a whole, it is concluded that taste buds do not contain specific protein detected by SDS-PAGE in adult rat. But a protein on M.W. 49000 which lies in the area of molecular weight of keratin molecules was found only in the epithelium containing taste buds. This results suggested that the epithelium containing taste buds differentiate dissimilarly to the epithelium not containing taste buds.
