Purpose: The purpose of this study was to estimate income-related health inequalities among adolescent population across regions in Korea. Methods: Data of 8,456 adolescents from 1998, 2001, 2005, 2007 Korean Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used for the analysis. True health status was proxied by self-rated health and overweight status. Per capita income was computed from household monthly average income adjusted by consumer price with base year 2005. Adolescent health inequalities were estimated by Concentration Index (CI) across income and space. Results: Ill health score was related with age (p<0.0001), gender (p=0.0155) and income (p<0.0001). Negative relationship between income and ill-health indicated that higher income group tended to enjoy better health and less overweight. These evidences suggested ill health were accumulated on the economically disadvantaged adolescents. The size of health inequalities (ill-health score) were estimated as CI=-0.057 and CI=-0.030 across income groups and regions, respectively. Comparable measures of within region health disparities were also observed. Conclusion: Since health disparity among adolescent population was small compared to adult population, lessening adolescent health inequality could be a helpful way of mitigating health disparities in later stage. Considering life stage of adolescents, school system and local communities could play important roles toward adolescent health distribution. Although health disparity between regions existed, health disparity within a region should not be neglected.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between lifestyle types, demographic variables, and clothing consumption orientations of male and female adolescents. The method of this study was a survey research by using questionnaires. Subjects were 393 high school students in Seoul. Four lifestyle types of adolescents were derived by cluster analysis: 'digital orientation type', 'material orientation type', 'positive enterprise type', and 'achievement orientation type'. The material oriented students spent high expense on clothes, had higher preference of imported products, had more sensuous consumption orientations, did more impulsive buying, and were more influenced by advertisements than other types of students. Digital oriented students had mothers with low educational background, low academic records, spent small expense on clothes, and had less sensuous consumption orientation. There were more male students than female students in positive enterprise type and the students of this type had upper middle academic records, had higher sensuous consumption orientation and did less impulsive buying. There were more female students than male students in achievement oriented type and this type had high academic records, had mothers with high educational background, and spent small expense on clothes. They had low level on most of the clothing consumption orientation and were especially less influenced by advertisement. This research confirms that the clothing consumption orientations are associated with the lifestyle of adolescent.
This study investigated the integrated effects of family, school, internet, and mass culture factors on the identity formation of adolescents. Specifically, the purposes of this study were to categorize adolescents into groups by what they do during the time except the life in school and to investigate differences among the groups regarding the identity information(body image, self-esteem, self-identity) and the influences of environmental factors on identity formation of adolescent. The study distributed questionnaires to middle and high school adolescents of five representative cities in South Korea. The total respondents were 2240(960 from Seoul/Kyongki, and 320 each from Taegu, Pusan, Kwangju, and Taejon). The response rate was 98.7%. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, cluster analysis, ANOVA, Duncan test, and multiple regression. The results showed that Korean adolescents were segmented into five groups : TV preference group, computer preference group, friends and family involvement group, homework and study preference group, and study institute involvement group). The five groups were significantly different in regard to body image pursuit, self-esteem, and self-identity. The body image pursuit, self-esteem, and self-identity of adolescents were significantly different in regard to each environmental factors, in each adolescent group.
Recently, purchasing expensive branded apparel became prevalent among adolescents as they consume conspicuously. People in their adolescence strongly tend to follow peers and are very likely to pay attention to how they wear look to others. Already a good deal of prior research about young people's conspicuous consumption have focused on variables related to these behaviors. The purpose of this study is to examine demographic characteristics of adolescents who show a conspicuous consumption and factors affecting this consumption which is related to peer relations. And we will examine how negative emotions arisen out of relations influence teenagers' conspicuous consumption of branded apparels ultimately. Being out of favor from peers has an effect on anxiety which is negative emotion in association with peer relations. According to the survey, adolescents did conspicuous consumption following others or following trends to get rid of anxiety. Also, if appears to be acting on clothing consumption as a means not to be marginalized. All these findings are expected to be useful information to adolescents to have a better habit of consumption life, and also anticipated to be valuable information for consumer behavior education. The cause of youth's show-off behavior, which is still incomplete in identity formation and immature in choice and judgement, will have to be analyzed and countermeasures taken against it.
The purpose of this study was to 1) segment female adolescent consumers into consumer groups displaying different consumer decision-making styles 2) to determine the consumer characteristics(clothing involvement information search store patronage and demographic variables) that related to each consumer segment and 3) to identify the interrelationship between the consumer characteristics. Decision-making styles were measured by 32 seven-point Likert type scales adapted from Sproles & Kendall and Shim & Kot A total of 78 statements dealing with three aspects of consumer characteristics was adapted from previous research. Data were collected from 567 2nd grade female middle and high school students in Seoul via self-administered questionnaires. and were analysed by frequency factor analysis ANOVA cluster analysis χ2 -test and Duncan's multiple range test. The results of this study were as follows: As a results of cluster analysis and ANOVA on seven factors of desion-making styles(1. brand-consiousness 2. novelty/fashion-consciousness 3. recreational/hedonis-tic orientation, 4. impulsive/carelessness, 5. price-consciousness/value-for-money, 6. perfectionism/high quality orientation 7. habitual/brand-royal consciousness) three consumer groups were identified and labeled as puality-oriented/non-utlitarian shoppers price-oriented shoppers and apathetic shoppers. Quality-oriented/non-utilitarian shoppers showed the highest clothing involvement scores of all aspects the highest consumer knowledge/experience most active ongoing information search and prepurchase information search. They preferred department store and franchise store for apparel shopping and considered service/reliability atmosphere variety of goods as important store attributes, Price-oriented shoppers showed prepurchase information search and planned purchase behavior actively. They preferred factory outlet store specialty stre and considered price very important as store attributes. Apathetic shoppers showed the lowest scores of all aspects of clothing involvement and most passive behavior in information search activities except showing the highest planned purchase. They preferred regional markets.
Fast food restaurants are growing in numbers in Korea since they were introduced abot a decade ago. To develop an effective marketing strategy for fast foods, it is important to assess consumer's acceptability and identify demorgraphic, environmental, and managerial factors which influence consumer's perception on the fast food restaurants. A total of 595 customers were surveyed at thirty hamburger chain restaurants in Seoul from November 7 to 15, 1988. Analyses of the collected data revealed that adolescents, females, and the people with high income were the major customers and visited more than once or twice a week; frequent visitors rated meals more favorably in terms of the quality, service and cleanliness, and they also rated meals of foreign brand more favorable than those of domestic one; the female group perceived the change in their dietary habits more than any other groups; cleanliness, convenience, atmosphere, courtesy, and the taste of foods were significant factors in purchasing fast foods; and customers were most satisfied with convenience, while least satisfied with the price and the quantity of foods. From these findings, it is sggested that the manager of the fast food restaurant must consider the consumer's perception of fast foods in terms of pros and cons in order to operate her/his restaurant successfully.
The aims of this study were to examine the actual conditions surrounding the purchasing of online game items and Internet cyberspace items by adolescents the propensity of adolescents to consume these items, to determine the difference in the propensity for high and low consumption of these items among adolescents, and to investigate the characteristics of the adolescents who show a high propensity for the consumption of Internet items. The data for this study were collected from 483 adolescent consumers who were middle school and high school students in the city of Bucheon in Gyeonggi Province. The statistical methods used for the data analysis included frequency, percentage, standard deviation, t-test, and one-way ANOVA. The results of the present study can be summarized as follows. The majority(79.5%) of the students surveyed had had the experience of purchasing items. Most students(67.5%) had a rare frequency of buying ($1{\sim}2$ times in a period of 6 months or less). Nearly half (47.9%) of the students spent less than 1000 won per month on the item(s) purchased. Most of the students purchased items with their parents' permission, but 26.6% of the students bought the items without their parents' permission. Most of the characteristics of the items purchased, such as the major item purchased, payment method, amount purchased per month, average amount spent per buying experience, and whether or not they had their parents' permission differed according to gender, grade level, record, and monthly allowance. The level of propensity to consume the items was not high. The propensity of imitation consumption (1.96) was lower than that of impulsive consumption (2.38) and conspicuous consumption (2.45). Most of the buying characteristics, including the major item purchased, payment method, amount purchased per month, average amount spent per buying experience, parents' permission, grade level, and monthly allowance were different between the high and low propensity for consumption groups.
This study groups the life content of adolescents according to their time spent during the week and compares their internet use. The data were collected from 2210 middle and high school students, including their life content and hours, and various internet factors such as self-evaluated internet addiction, internet support, internet experience, chatting subjects and the type of internet service. Adolescents were divided into five groups: TV-oriented group, computer-oriented group, peer-oriented group, self-study group and extracurricular institution group. The purpose of internet use, internet experience, chatting subjects, negative aspects of internet and internet addiction were different by adolescents' group type. The peer-oriented group had the highest real self image as opposed to the cyber self image and trusted other's words on the internet. The TV-oriented group had the lowest trust in the internet. The computer-oriented group received the highest internet support and internet experiences, but didn't use the internet for the purpose of information search. The self-study and extra-curricular institution groups used the internet the least, used it to solve stress and were interested in school circles on the internet.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parent-adolescent relationship and marital conflict perceived by adolescents on peer victimization. The subjects were 353 middle school students selected from two middle schools in the Incheon area. The instruments of research included the peer victimization index, the parenting behavior index, the parent-adolescent communication index, and the marital conflict inventory. The statistics used for this data were t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. This study showed that middle school student's peer victimization was influenced significantly by the gender. Correlation analysis indicated that parenting behavior and peer victimization were significantly correlated. That is, oppressive, over protective and/or permissive attitudes of the parent were positively correlated with peer victimization. Intimacy and reasonable attitude were negatively correlated with middle school student's peer victimization. Also, parent-adolescent communication and peer victimization were significantly correlated. Especially, open communication was negatively correlated with peer victimization while problematic communication was positively correlated with peer victimization. Marital conflict perceived by adolescents was positively correlated with peer victimization. It was also found that gender, oppressive attitude, permissive attitude, open communication, and marital conflict were significant predictors of middle school student's peer victimization.

To investigate the consumer awareness and clothing purchase behavior of adolescents, questionnaire was administered to 639 middle and high school students in Daegu. The results were as follows. 1. The consumer awareness of adolescents was analyzed to 4 factors. consciousness of right. consumer information, brand-orientedness and responsibility. Respondents were clustered into three groups : utility-oriented group, brand-oriented group, and consumerism-oriented group. 2. Respondents bought their clothes at specialty stores primarily. They used ´products´, ´family's or friends advices´, and ´purchase experiences´ as information sources. The important criteria for selecting clothes were ´design´, ´price´, and ´suitability´ for oneself. Dissatisfactions after purchasing clothes were with ´price´, ´service´, ´sewing´, and ´size´. The complaining behaviors which respondents did mainly were ´telling friends about dissatisfaction with their purchased clothes´, ´asking for change dissatisfying products or asking for refund´ and ´asking for mending´. 3. Information sources were categorized into 3 factors: ´neutral information source´, ´personal information source´ and ´commercial information source´. Criteria for selecting clothes were factor-analyzed into ´harmony´, ´fashion´ and ´management of clothes´. ´The factors of dissatisfactions with purchased clothes were ´appearance´, ´quality´ and ´service´. 4.
