  • Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) adjustable speed drives offer significant advantages over induction motor drives in a wide variety of industrial applications such as high power density, high efficiency, improved dynamic performance and reliability. Since the fuzzy neural network(FNN) is recognized general approximate method to control non-linearities and uncertainties, the development of FNN control systems have also grown rapidly. The FNN controller is compounded of fuzzy and neural network. It has an advantage that is the robustness of fuzzy control and the ability to adapt of neural network. However, the FNN has static problem due to their feed-forward network structure. This paper proposes high performance speed control of IPMSM drive using the recurrent FNN(RFNN) which improved conventional FNN controller. The RFNN has excellent dynamic response characteristics because of it has internally feed-back structure. Also, this paper proposes speed estimation of IPMSM drive using ANN. The proposed method is analyzed and compared to conventional FNN controller in various operating condition such as parameter variation, steady and transient states etc.

  • Advantages of switched reluctance motor(SRM) drives make it an attractive candidate for replacing adjustable speed ac and dc drives in both industrial and consumer applications. Furthermore, a simple, low cost and robust SRM drive can be efficiently operated in the hostile environment of an automobile. Generally, the speed control of SRM has a large step change or large torque reference, the output of its PI controller is often saturated. When this happens, the integral state is not consistent with the SRM input, while may give rise to the windup phenomenon. This paper proposes anti-windup control method for SRM speed control system by hysteresis current controlled asymmetry bridge converter. The experimental results show that the speed response has much improved performance, such as a small overshoot and fast settling time at the acceleration and particulary deceleration period with braking mode.

  • Conventional P/PI speed controller of today's servo drives should be manually tuned the controller switching set-point by trial-and-errors, which may translate the drive system down-time and loss of productivity. The adjustable drive performance is heavily dependent on the qualify of the expert knowledge and becomes inadequate in applications where the operating conditions change in a wide range, i.e., tracking command, cceleration/deceleration time, and load disturbances. In this paper, the demands on simple controls/setup are discussed for industry servo drives. Analyzing the frequency content of motor torque command, P/PI control mode switching is automatically peformed with some prior knowledge of the mechanical dynamics. The dynamic performance of the proposed scheme assures a desired tracking response curve with minimal oscillation and settling time over the whole operating conditions. For comprehensive comparison of traditional P/PI control scheme, extensive test is carried out on actual servo system.

  • The switched reluctance motor(SRM) drive system provides a good adjustable speed characteristics. However higher torque ripple are one of the few disadvantages of the SRM drives. The SRM would have to operated with an MMF waveform specified for switching angle and phase voltage. This paper proposes control modelling method using ANN(Artificial Neural Network) and GA(Genetic Algorithm) that are used to control switch-on angles and input voltage.

  • The intrinsic simplicity, ruggedness, and simple power electronic drive requirement of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) make it a viable use for many commercial adjustable speed applications. However, higher torque ripple is one of the few disadvantages of the SRM drives. This paper describes the robust control scheme that permits the phase torque flatted by adaptive reference model.

  • In this paper, various reduced parts converter topologies and control strategies for power factor correction and motor control are reviewed and systematic design methodology is developed. From this investigation, the converter topologies could be mainly categorized into cascade type and unified type. The detailed operational principles are examined and the performance comparison is derived to illustrate merits and limitations of the converters. Simulation results are provided to help the better understanding of the theoretical description and several experimental results are presented on prototype induction motor better brush less dc (BLDC) motor drives, along with cascade and unified type converters.

  • The application of a sliding mode control for improving the dynamic response of an induction motor based speed control system is presented in this paper and provides attractive features, such as fast response, good transient performance, and insensitivity to variations in plant parameters and external disturbance. However, chattering is a difficult problem for which the sliding mode control is a popular solution. This paper presents a new fuzzy-sliding mode controller for a sensorless vector-controlled induction motor servo system to practically eliminate the chattering problem for traction applications. A DSP based implementation of the speed control system is employed. Experimental results are presented using a propulsion system simulator. The performance of the drive is shown to be practically free from chattering.

  • Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) adjustable speed drives offer significant advantages over induction motor drives in a wide variety of industrial applications such as high power density, high efficiency, improved dynamic performance and reliability. This paper proposes on-line efficiency optimization of IPMSM drive using fuzzy logic control(FLC) and the loss minimization method. In order to optimize the efficiency the loss minimization algorithm is developed based on motor model and operating condition. The d-axis armature current is utilized to minimize the losses of the IPMSM in a closed loop vector control environment. The controllable electrical loss which consists of the copper loss and the iron loss can be minimized by the optimal control of the armature current. The minimization of loss is possible to realize efficiency optimization control for the proposed IPMSM. The optimal current can be decided according to the operating speed and the load conditions. The proposed control algorithm is applied to IPMSM drive system and the operating characteristics controlled by the loss minimization method and FLC control are examined in detail.

  • As the adjustable speed drives by means of PWM inverter are applied to a wider field of industries, the demands for lower acoustic noise caused by modulation is becoming more intense. With the development of high speed power semiconductor device such as the IGBTs, a higher carrier frequency can be adopted to increase the switching frequency to the supersonic range. The optimal magnitude of this signal is determined so that the sideband components near the carrier frequency are minimized
