  • In this study, the three-dimensional finite element method is used to determine the stress intensity factor in Mode I and Mixed mode of a centered crack in an aluminum specimen repaired by a composite patch using contour integral. Various mesh densities were used to achieve convergence of the results. The effect of adhesive joint thickness, patch thickness, patch-specimen interface and layer sequence on the SIF was highlighted. The results obtained show that the patch-specimen contact surface is the best indicator of the deceleration of crack propagation, and hence of SIF reduction. Thus, the reduction in rigidity of the patch especially at adhesive layer-patch interface, allows the lowering of shear and normal stresses in the adhesive joint. The choice of the orientation of the adhesive layer-patch contact is important in the evolution of the shear and peel stresses. The patch will be more beneficial and effective while using the cross-layer on the contact surface.

  • A new PDP cell structure called CSP(Charge Storage Pad) improves the luminous efficiency by 1.6 times and prevents cross talk between adjacent cells. The CSP, which is a conducting material, is inserted between the dielectric layer and the MgO film in the front plate. This CSP produces a longer time-averaged discharge path to get a high luminous efficiency and confines the discharge to prevent cross talk.

  • The monolayer of oxygen atoms sandwitched between the adjacent nanocrystalline silicon layers was formed by ultra high vacuum-chemical vapor deposition (UHV-CVD). This multi-layer Si-O structure forms a new type of superlattice, semiconductor-atomic superattice (SAS). According to the experimental results, high-resolution cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) shows epitaxial system. Also, the current-voltage (I-V) measurement results show the stable and good insulating behavior with high breakdown voltage. It is apparent that the system may form an epitaxially grown insulating layer as possible replacement of silicon-on-insulator (SOI), a scheme investigated as future generation of high efficient and high density CMOS on SOI.

  • Objectives: This study was carried out to concrete the concept of Hand Gworeum Skin referred in Suwen of Huangdi Neijing. Methods: The Hand Gworeum Meridian was labeled with latex in the body surface of the cadaver, subsequently dissecting a superficial fascia and muscular layer in order to observe internal structures. Results: Skin histologically encompasses a common integument and a immediately below superficial fascia, this study established the skin boundary with adjacent structures such as relative muscle, tendon as its compass. The realm of the Hand Gworeum Skin is as follows: The skin close to the nipple on the 4th intercostal space, the interceps of biceps brachii muscle, the cubital surface at ulnad of bicipital aponeurosis, the anterior surface of the forearm, between flexor carpi radialis and palmaris longus(from wrist crease to 5chon above), the palm between the 3rd and 4th metacarpals on the cross part with the palm crease, the radiod from the middle finger nail(or the end of middle finger). The realm of the Hand Gworeum Skin is situated on between Hand Taeeum Skin and Hand Soeum Skin in front of arm. Conclusion: The realm of Hand Gworeum Skin from the anatomical viewpoint seems to be the skin area outside the superficial fascia or the muscle involved in the pathway of the Hand Gworeum Meridian vessel, Collateral Meridian vessel, and Meridian muscle, being considered adjacent vessels or nerves at the same time.

  • The Maanshan Bridge over Yangtze River in China is a new long-span suspension bridge with double main spans of $2{\times}1080m$ and a closed streamline cross-section of single box deck. The flutter and buffeting performances were investigated via wind tunnel tests of a full bridge aeroelastic model at a geometric scale of 1:211. The tests were conducted in both smooth wind and simulated boundary layer wind fields. Emphasis is placed on studying the interference effect of adjacent span via installing a wind deflector and a wind separating board to shelter one span of the bridge model from incoming flow. Issues related to effects of mid-tower stiffness and deck supporting conditions are also discussed. The testing results show that flutter critical wind velocities in smooth flow, with a wind deflector, are remarkably lower than those without. In turbulent wind, torsional and vertical standard deviations for the deck responses at midspan in testing cases without wind deflector are generally less than those at the midspan exposed to wind in testing cases with wind deflector, respectively. When double main spans are exposed to turbulent wind, the existence of either span is a mass damper to the other. Furthermore, both effects of mid-tower stiffness and deck supporting conditions at the middle tower on the flutter and buffeting performances of the Maanshan Bridge are unremarkable.

  • Automatic age estimation has been used in many social network applications, practical commercial applications, and human-computer interaction visual-surveillance biometrics. However, it has rarely been explored. In this paper, we propose an automatic age estimation system, which includes face detection and convolutional deep learning based on an inception module. The latter is a 22-layer-deep network that serves as the particular category of the inception design. To evaluate the proposed approach, we use 4,000 images of eight different age groups from the Adience age dataset. k-fold cross-validation (k = 5) is applied. A comparison of the performance of the proposed work and recent related methods is presented. The results show that the proposed method significantly outperforms existing methods in terms of the exact accuracy and off-by-one accuracy. The off-by-one accuracy is when the result is off by one adjacent age label to the above or below. For the exact accuracy, the age label of "60+" is classified with the highest accuracy of 76%.

  • The life time of a wireless sensor network composed of numerous sensor nodes depend on ones of its sensor nodes. The energy efficiency operation of nodes, therefore, is one of the crucial factors to design the network. Researches based on the hierarchical network topology have been proposed and evolved in terms of energy efficiency. However, in existing researches, application layer data obtained from sensor nodes are not considered properly to compose cluster, including issue that nodes communicate with their cluster heads in TDMA scheduling. In this paper, we suggest an energy-efficient topology control scheme based on application layer data in wireless sensor networks. By using application layer data, sensor nodes form a section which is defined as the area of adjacent nodes that retain similar characteristics of application environments. These sections are further organized into clusters. We suggest an algorithm for selecting a cluster head as well as a way of scheduling to reduce the number of unnecessary transmissions from each node to its cluster head, which based on the degree and the duration of similarity between the node's data and its head's data in each cluster without seriously damaging the integrity of application data. The results show that the suggested scheme can save the energy of nodes and increase the life time of the entire network.

  • Artificial ground freezing (AGF) is a commonly used geotechnical support technique that can be applied in any soil type and has low environmental impact. Experimental and numerical investigations have been conducted to optimize AGF for application in diverse scenarios. Precise simulation of groundwater flow is crucial to improving the reliability these investigations' results. Previous experimental research has mostly considered horizontal seepage flow, which does not allow accurate calculation of the groundwater flow velocity due to spatial variation of the piezometric head. This study adopted vertical seepage flow-which can maintain a constant cross-sectional area-to eliminate the limitations of using horizontal seepage flow. The closure time is a measure of the time taken for an impermeable layer to begin to form, this being the time for a frozen soil-ice wall to start forming adjacent to the freeze pipes; this is of great importance to applied AGF. This study reports verification of the reliability of our experimental apparatus and measurement system using only water, because temperature data could be measured while freezing was observed visually. Subsequent experimental AFG tests with saturated sandy soil were also performed. From the experimental results, a method of estimating closure time is proposed using the inflection point in the thermal conductivity difference between pore water and pore ice. It is expected that this estimation method will be highly applicable in the field. A further parametric study assessed factors influencing the closure time using a two-dimensional coupled thermo-hydraulic numerical analysis model that can simulate the AGF of saturated sandy soil considering groundwater flow. It shows that the closure time is affected by factors such as hydraulic gradient, unfrozen permeability, particle thermal conductivity, and freezing temperature. Among these factors, changes in the unfrozen permeability and particle thermal conductivity have less effect on the formation of frozen soil-ice walls when the freezing temperature is sufficiently low.
